Michigan Firearm FAQ: Can I Legally Carry A Handgun At The Detroit Zoo?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: I am taking the kids to the Detroit Zoo tomorrow. Their visitor information page makes no mention of firearms. Do you know if CC (conceal carry) is OK at the zoo?

A: Zoos, including the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, are not listed in the statutes as a gun-free zone. Accordingly, lawful carry of a firearm should be OK.

Further, I have heard many people speculate that the zoo "could be" thought of as an entertainment facility that seats more than 2,500 people, which is a conceal carry pistol-free zone in the statute. Currently, there are no signs at the entrances of the zoo taking the position that the zoo is a gun-free zone.

As a double-check, I placed a call with the Detroit Zoo's Security Office and was informed that they do not have a "weapons policy" but they did ask that patrons be mindful that children are often present of their facility. Personally, I don't see how children being present has anything to do with a law-abiding citizen carrying a gun at the zoo. Perhaps, they'd rather that citizens lawfully conceal their firearms with a CPL than to Open Carry.

In any case, have a great time time at the park.

Laws covering self-defense, lethal force, firearms, and the Michigan Concealed Pistol License and their enforcement are always subject to change due to laws being amended, politics conducted in the Prosecutor's Office, and election results at all levels of government. Ignorance of the law, legally speaking, is not a valid excuse for running afoul of it. The penalties and fines imposed upon violators of firearms related offenses are stiff and severe.
