Personal Protection Tip: Exercise Precaution On Home Service Calls

Personal Protection Tip: Exercise Precaution On Home Service Calls
Despite your best efforts to be independent, you may at some point in time need to invite a service technician into your home. Everyone needs help sometime: furnace woes, plumbing problems, appliance breakdowns, and etc.
Unless you personally know and can vouch for the character of the person who is going to be dispatched to your residence, you should always take reasonable precautions:
- Never hire someone you did not call.
- Verify in advance person works for company you called.
- Verify in advance person has requisite licenses.
- Never let someone in your home unless it is necessary.
- Never be alone when a service person shows up to work.
- Never leave valuables in plain view.
- Always close all interior doors of your property.
- Never allow service person to be unsupervised.
- Never discuss your working hours or personal info.
- Never allow service person to see you disabling alarm systems.
- Ensure all windows are locked when service person leaves.
- Stay alert for anything that seems odd or weird.
As a general rule, you should not allow strangers into your home, however it is not always practical. Being practical does not mean that you should be completely at ease. Exercising some common sense protocols can enhance your personal safety during a service call.

Michigan CPL Class FAQ: How Often Should I Clean My Handgun?

Michigan CPL Class FAQ: How Often Should I Clean My Handgun?
Q: How often should I clean my handgun?

A: You should regularly clean your handgun, as directed by your Operator's Guide. Most Operator's Guides will, at a minimum, instruct you to clean your handgun after every usage. Further, if you maintain your marksmanship skills by practicing at an approved range at least once per month, you will be cleaning your handgun at least 12 times per year.

To illustrate, I consulted with a Glock Operator's Guide to see what they endorsed as a proper cleaning protocol for their pistols. They specified the following:
1. When brand new, before the first time it is fired.
2. At least once per month, plus
3. After each time it is fired, plus
4. As required, depending on the weather where it is being used, if it has been dropped, or if any malfunctions have been observed.

Accordingly, cleaning your handgun will be an ongoing activity, as dictated by your Operator's Guide. If you own a Glock pistol, you will at a minimum be cleaning your handgun every month.

Cleaning a handgun is not a difficult task. In fact, it can be done fairly quickly in a safe manner. Be sure to follow all applicable firearm safety rules and all manufacturer specific guidelines for the safe operation of your handgun.

Firearm Safety Tip: Never Attempt To Clean A Loaded Gun

Firearm Safety Tip: Never Attempt To Clean A Loaded Gun
Jose Canseco joins the ever growing list of notable people who have the distinct honor of shooting themselves while attempting to clean a firearm. Cleaning a semi-automatic handgun is a relatively easy, simple, and safe activity, if you follow a few common sense and easy to understand fundamental firearm safety tips. Users seem to tragically fail at the first step: unloading the firearm.
First and foremost, one should point his firearm in a safe direction while keeping all of his fingers off the trigger. Then the magazine should be removed. Then and only then should the user manipulate the slide to check the chamber while simultaneously emptying the chamber, if necessary. Order is important because if you clear the chamber before removing the magazine, your firearm may still be loaded.
Furthermore, it would also be a good idea to check, double-check, and triple-check that the magazine is removed and that the chamber is empty. Once the firearm is truly unloaded, should the operator then proceed with field stripping and cleaning his firearm.
A firearm is not a complicated device to safely own and operate. However, it does require one to know, follow, and adhere to some simple gun safety rules each and every time he comes into contact with a handgun.

Personal Protection Tip: There Is No Such Thing As A Fair Fight

Personal Protection Tip: There Is No Such Thing As A Fair Fight
There is a difference between participating in a competitive sporting event and fighting. All sporting competitions, such as martial arts tournaments and boxing matches, have one thing in common; they have rules.
Moreover, there is usually at least one impartial observer present who has the job of enforcing the rules so that a winner can be fairly determined without someone acquiring permanent and disabling injuries.
In contrast, there are no rules in a fight. When defending yourself against an unprovoked and violent attack from a dangerous predator, there is no such thing as a fair fight. There are no rules or referees present to ensure that you are not maimed or not killed.
There is no unspoken agreement that a robber or other violent criminal will not harm you if acquiesce to his demands. There is no politically neutral referee present to enforce a ban on your torture and suffering. It is not uncommon for victims to be killed after complying with every request presented to them.
If a bad guy attempts to rob you, rape you, carjack you, or home-invade you, your life is in jeopardy regardless of what he tells you. He violated you and doesn't want to face any consequences for doing so. Killing you is a quickly calculated and logically made decision. There are no rules.
A person who has been selected for victimization should do whatever is possible to prevail and survive: Discharging Firearm, Improvised Weapons, Eye-Ball Gouges, and any other mayhem you can bring to the fight. It is truly an "anything goes" environment until the threat to your safety has ended.
Your assailant's physical well-being during his assault upon you is not your concern. Rather, your safety and well-being should be your utmost priority.
Fight hard, fight to win, and fight dirty.
There are no rules.

Responsible Firearm Ownership Tip: Control Access To Your Firearm

Responsible Firearm Ownership Tip: Control Access To Your Firearm
If you own a firearm, you have a non-negotiable responsibility to keep it away from unauthorized users, especially unsupervised children. Your firearms should always either be under your direct control or securely stored. It is unacceptable for a four year-old child to gain access to an unattended firearm.
It is understandable that many people have a desire to have an easily accessible firearm just in case a predator kicks down his front door or climbs inside via a window. That does not absolve one of his responsibility to control access to his firearm.
A very simple way to balance accessibility and control of a loaded firearm is to buy and use a quick open safe. These devices allow gun owners to have fast access to a loaded gun in the case of an emergency.
The down-side to using a quick open safe is that the owner will need to get to the safe's location if it is needed. This is no different than negligently leaving a loaded firearm on a table when a young child is playing nearby.
Many firearm owners opt to always wear their gun in a holster all day even while home or have it close by within an arm's reach. In fact, in the story referenced below, the gun owner was allegedly quoted as saying that her gun was in her holster when the child gained access to it as she slept.
The child reportedly stated he took the unattended gun off of a table. Personally, I find it hard to believe that a four year-old was able to unholster a gun from his mother's body, even if she was allegedly sleeping.
In any case, gun ownership requires responsibility. A large part of that responsibility is controlling access to one's guns. I believe that the mother did not wish to harm her child. However, if the allegations are true, her negligence caused that to happen. Although she is facing "Neglect" charges, it could have been much worse. She could have spent her day today planning the funeral of her son.
The irony of this story is that the gun owner probably bought a firearm to protect both herself and her child from violent crime. Her alleged negligence allowed harm to actually happen to her child.
Firearm safety is a 24 hour per day responsibility. If you are not capable of being responsible, please do not buy a firearm. Responsible gun owners don't need the grief of you being the latest pawn in the fight for more gun control.

Personal Protection Tip: Launch A Preemptive Strike

Personal Protection Tip: Launch A Preemptive Strike
If you are ever in a situation whereby you confidently believe that you are about to be unjustifiably and savagely attacked, launching a preemptive strike may provide you with an acceptable solution.

In Michigan, there is no requirement that "victims" must actually be hurt or struck by their assailants before defending themselves. In fact, striking first could very well give a "victim" the element of surprise which could result in ending the impending and potentially dangerous conflict safely and quickly.

A "victim" merely has to be reasonably afraid that an assailant is imminently putting them at risk of suffering great bodily harm, sexual assault, or death. The two key words of paramount importance are "reasonably" and "imminently."

Please keep in mind than any usage of force by the victim - up to and including lethal force - will be subject to an investigation by the local police department and the local prosecutor. Thusly, the victim and the victim's attorney must be able to clearly articulate why the preemptive attack was justified as opposed to undertaking another course of action.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that the "attacker" may have an opportunity to present another version of the incident to the authorities which could call into question the legality of your actions. Furthermore, there could also be objective evidence present at the scene which could lead to other conclusions: witnesses, video, and etc.

If the investigation of the totality of the circumstances does not support or justify self-defense the preemptive attack strike employed by the "victim" could result in criminal charges and a litany of dire consequences.

A preemptive strike is not a perfect one-size-fits-all solution for every situation, as it carries an element of risk which could potentially end badly for the "victim." However, it can be considered as another potential tool in your Personal Protection Plan.

Personal Protection Tip: Add A Tactical Pen To Your EDC

Personal Protection Tip: Carry A Tactical Pen
Persons concerned about their personal safety when venturing into Pistol-Free Zones should consider carrying a "Tactical Pen" as an improvised personal protection tool. Tactical Pens are fully functional writing implements which do not typically fall under banned item lists and are hidden in plain sight during contraband checks.

A Tactical Pen's relatively small size enables it to be easily accessed from either a shirt pocket or from the pocket of a pair of pants.

With a modicum of widely available training, a Tactical Pen can be wielded and utilized as effectively as a kubaton, which may actually be banned in some locations. Many Tactical Pens available in the marketplace are manufactured with a housing made of aerospace grade anodized aluminum. As such, they are lightweight and have an ergonomic form optimized for "ice pick" and "forward" grips to deliver effective defensive strikes to an assailant.

Moreover, many models are equipped with a special "glass break" tip that can shatter automobile windows, which can be of great usefulness in an emergency.

A Tactical Pen is a worthy item to be added to your EDC (Every Day Carry).
