Personal Protection Tip: Beware Of Good Samaritans Returning Lost Items

Personal Protection Tip: An old ruse used by predators to emotionally disarm victims involves making a false claim about a lost item. For example, a robber may verbally notify and approach a person about a dropped wallet that obviously belongs to the selected victim.

The victim, motivated by dishonesty and greed, allows the predator to invade his personal space and is promptly attacked. The moral of the story is to vehemently wave off and get away from someone trying to give you something that you didn't lose. Honesty is not only the best policy but it is also the safest course of action.

Personal Protection Tip: Exercise Due Caution With Pan-Handlers

Personal Protection Tip: Exercise extreme caution when being solicited for donations by panhandlers. If you spend any appreciable amount of time in Detroit, you have certainly seen more than your share of people in need asking for money in high traffic and dangerous locations: freeway exit ramps, gas stations, convenience stores, and parking lots.

Their apparent plight may pull at your heartstrings and give you the desire to help a person in need of a meal. In truth, on many occasions I have given money to panhandlers. However, when doing so, I am very mindful of the real risks that exists when doing so.

For instance, the apparent panhandler may in fact be a criminal seeking to distract you before attacking you himself or setting you up to be attacked by another person. In an incident that happened recently, a panhandler at a gas station got aggressive and berated me for giving too little - in his mind - before I had to respond aggressively to inform him that I could not be intimidated or scared into giving more than I planned.

If despite the risks of giving money to panhandlers, you still insist on doing so (as I do on occasion) take a few steps as a precaution: keep at a relatively safe distance, have the donation readily accessible, scan area for other people who may be a threat, give the money quickly, keep your eyes on the panhandler, and remove yourself from the scene quickly.

Finally, if the plight of the homeless bothers you and you do not want to take the risk of being set-up for a robbery, give strong consideration to either volunteering your time at a charity or giving monetary donations to your favorite charitable organization via payroll donation.

Personal Protection Tip: Safely Respond To Unexpected Visitors To Thwart Burglary Attempts

Personal Protection Tip: A common tactic used by burglars is to ring doorbells of unoccupied homes. When it is confirmed that no one is home, the would-be burglars will go to the back of the home and break out a window to gain entry. Thus, if you are home it is advisable to at least safely respond to an unexpected doorbell ring to at least thwart a possible burglary attempt of your residence.

For example, in December of 2011 a Harrison Twp girl was home from school when burglars invaded her home. Luckily, she was able to hide under a bed and call 9-1-1 to alert the local police which promptly responded and caught the law-breakers.

However, do keep in mind that there are members of the criminal element who have no qualms about invading known occupied homes. Thus, answering unexpected doorbell rings may deter burglars but will not deter home-invaders. The latter can only be stopped via justified force.

Personal Protection Tip: Drivers Of Older Vehicles Are Potential Carjacking Victims

Personal Protection Tip: Many people mistakenly believe that by driving an older car that their odds of being carjacked will be minimized. Carjackers steal occupied vehicles for a variety of reasons other than selling them to a chop shop for a fast financial return.

An older stolen car allows predators to commit secondary crimes: carjackings of newer cars, get-away cars in the aftermath of robberies, drive-by shootings, and a place to dispose of dead victims. Thus, a driver of ANY car, regardless of the car's age or condition can be a carjacking victim. So, whenever you are behind the wheel be mindful that you might be a potential victim.

Personal Protection Tip: Verify Credibility Of Self-Defense Advice

Personal Protection Tip: Do not accept "old wives tales" as facts. With the advent and popularity of the Internet, many urban legends are quickly disseminated across the globe and widely believed despite being false. One such myth is that ATM PIN numbers have a safety feature that will dispense the requested cash and also notify the police IF the PIN is entered in reverse order. This info and other urban legends can be debunked by researching Snopes.com on the Internet. Basing your safety on false information can be dangerous.

Tomorrow night's appearance will be Ector's 16th overall and third of this year. Ector usually appears as a guest correspondent whenever there is a story about Detroit that is of national interest.

Personal Protection Tip: Never Have A "First Date" At A Private Residence

Personal Protection Tip: Never have a first date with someone at a private residence regardless of whose residence is the proposed location. A neutral meeting place such as a cafe, coffee shop, or restaurant should be chosen instead. Until you feel comfortable with this new person in your life, you should continue seeing each other outside of a residential environment.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that you truly know someone because of a perceived connection established solely over the telephone, an online dating site, or a social media community.

A significant factor that influences being crime-free is NOT providing a clear and compelling motive for bad guys to attack you by invading your home.

Personal Protection Tip: Don't Make Your Windows Function As Display Cases

Personal Protection Tip: Bay windows are a desirable feature to have in a residence, as they can provide a picturesque view of the surrounding community. However, they can also be a security liability for they can allow casual observers from the outside to get a good look inside of your home.

If you have bay windows at your residence, you should give strong consideration to applying window treatments to maintain your privacy. In addition, you should have valuable furnishings and appliance NOT in plain view from the window: artwork, sculptures, prized collections, computers, consumer electronics, and firearms.

A significant factor that influences being crime-free is NOT providing a clear and compelling motive for bad guys to attack you by invading your home.

Personal Protection Tip: Properly Maintain and Upkeep Your Property

Personal Protection Tip: Properly maintaining the upkeep of your real property may deter predatory home-invaders from selecting your home. A well maintained residence does not afford criminals the requisite cover to break into your home and implies that the home is occupied.

Routine upkeep includes mowing and edging the lawn regularly, removing and discarding handbills, addressing peeling paint, promptly fixing any broken windows, and properly fixing structural issues such as delapidated porches, steps, and masonry.

In contrast, a poorly maintained property can send a subtle signal to bad guys that a home is ripe for vandalization. Furthermore, an unkept home may also be targeted by scrappers who have no qualms above stealing bricks, aluminum and vinyl siding, and interior plumbing.

Personal Protection Tip: Refuse To Perform Unsafe Tasks At Work

Personal Protection Tip: It is not only unwise but it is also extremely unsafe to perform certain functions requested by your employer. High atop of that list is making a bank deposit, day or night, of that company's income for the day. If your employer is too cheap to pay for an armed security courier service to make the bank run, you should insist that he risks his safety for his company's deposits.

Other work tasks that also should be refused include but is not limited to working alone in a retail establishment and opening or closing a retail establishment without appropriate safeguards to keep you safe.

Personal Protection Tip: Stop Carrying A Purse

Personal Protection Tip: Nothing attracts the attention of predators more than a large purse or handbag carried by a woman. Certainly, the average large-sized satchel will have something of value that can be easily pawned or traded for cash.

A woman can greatly enhance her chances of not being selected for a robbery if she can break the carrying of a purse habit. If you are woman, please take this opportunity to stop what you are doing right now and conduct an inventory of your purse. Do you really need to lug around all of that stuff? Your decision to not carry bait for predators may mean the difference between being robbed and being passed over for a more suitable target.

Personal Protection Tip: Critically Watch Daily TV Newscasts

Personal Protection Tip: A great way to stay abreast of crime trends is to regularly watch the news on your favorite television channel. The daily broadcast can alert you of establishments in the city that are current popular havens for crimes.

In addition, you can observe the latest tactics being used by criminals to target victims. For example, in the past week in Detroit, it seems that there is a resurgence in predators using both the "Bump & Rob" tactic on the road and an increase in conducting armed robberies of deliverymen. Thus, critically watching the daily newscast can yield clues on how to remain safe.

Personal Protection Tip: Strengthen Residential Windows With Fortifying Film

Personal Protection Tip: Over 80% of all break-ins involve either a compromised door or a broken window. As such, one way of fortifying your home against predatory invaders would be the strengthening of your windows.

Several US home security manufacturers produce a film that can be applied to windows with an adhesive that makes them significantly harder to compromise. A window with the aforementioned coating is able to withstand powerful blows without shattering and allowing entry to bad guys. Thus, a homeowner who wishes to discourage an invasion of his residence should consider applying this film to all of their windows.

Personal Protection Tip: Avoid Parking Your Vehicle In Parking Structures

Personal Protection Tip: Avoid using parking structures to park your vehicle. These facilities are breeding places for crime. They are usually poorly illuminated and provide numerous places for bad guys to hide. Instead, motorists should strongly consider parking their vehicles in an open surface lot in a well lit area close to their destination. Furthermore, an even better option would be the usage of valet parking services, if available.

Personal Protection Tip: Approach Blind Corners With Due Caution

Personal Protection Tip: Exercise due caution when approaching a blind corner. A blind corner is any obstruction, such as a building, that does not give a clear line of sight around it. Blind corners should be navigated with a wide berth to maximize distance from any threat that materializes and to preserve other defensive options that may be at your disposal.

Personal Protection Tip: Trust Your Intuition About Potential Danger

Personal Protection Tip: Don't underestimate the protective power of intuition which some people might readily dismiss as foolish notions. The human sub-conscious mind can readily identify subtle clues and hints that anger may be afoot.

It is not uncommon for victims of violent crimes to recall an uneasy feeling about a person or an environment before they were assaulted. Thus, one should learn to pay attention to and obey negative vibes that they experience. Doing so may one day save your life.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Tip: Monthly Practice Shooting At A Target Range

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Shooting is a depreciable skill. As such, you will need to regularly practice shooting to maintain your ability to accurately hit a desired target. At an absolute minimum, you should fire at least 50 rounds of ammunition per month.

No amount of practice can prepare you for shooting at a bad guy while under stress, however the more you practice and the more intimately familiar you are with your firearm your odds of prevailing will be higher.

Moreover, there is a legal and practical reason to practice shooting: you are responsible for your misses. Thus, if you fire your handgun and miss your target you can be found to be criminally and civilly liable for wherever your bullets come to rest. So, practice often to minimize the odds that you will miss.

Personal Protection Tip: Create A Tailored Personal Protection Plan

Personal Protection Tip: Personal Protection, like any other goal, does not just happen; it requires planning. Every person desiring to not be a victim of unprovoked violence from the whims of a predator needs to create a custom tailored Personal Protection Plan.

This plan will design a system around your lifestyle that will examine your vulnerabilities and provide methods to keep you safe. A good plan will examine your habits, your associations, where you live, where you spend your time, your occupation, and every other facet of your life that defines you as a person.

Obviously, no person can design a system that will be 100 percent effective in ensuring that you will not be attacked. However, by actively knowing where you are most vulnerable a contingency can be created to deal with it.

In most cases, one need only to follow a plan that makes him less desirable, from a predator's view, to be attacked than someone else. This approach will not stop crime in the aggregate but it will protect you.

Another tactic to approach in your Personal Protection Plan is to build into it the "art of avoidance." Many times, you will further protect yourself by simply not putting yourself in an environment where something bad can happen to you.

Safety is not random; it is planned. Further, once you have developed and adopted a plan, you need to follow it.

Do you have a plan to keep you safe?

Personal Protection Tip: Secure Ladders On Your Premises

Personal Protection Tip: Do not make it easy for home-invaders to enter your residence by failing to secure ladders. A ladder enables bad guys to come into your home via a second floor window where most people do not have alarm systems and motion detectors installed. Moreover, most home owners tend to keep their valuables in their bedrooms on higher floors. Accordingly, all ladders on your premises should be securely stored and chained up in your basement, garage, or shed.

Personal Protection Tip: Avoid Conducting Initial Business Meeting At A Private Residence

Personal Protection Tip: With the advent of the Internet, there has been an explosion in the number of persons doing business out of their homes. However, as a practical matter, you should avoid meeting strangers at either their home or your residence to transact business. A mutually neutral location, such as a coffee house or cafe with a wi-fi setup, should be selected as an initial meeting place. Later, as the business relationship matures other less public options can be pursued in the future.

Personal Protection Tip: Discreetly Dispose Of Major Appliance Boxes

Personal Protection Tip: Do not tempt a home-invasion of your residence by inadvertently advertising to local hooligans in your community that you have just purchased something worth stealing.

If you make a major purchase such as a large screen TV or a popular gaming console, do not place the box outside your home for garbage pickup. Instead, break down and tear up the delivery box into small pieces and discreetly dispose of it in a plain and solid colored garbage bag.

Personal Protection Tip: Install Inexpensive Low Voltage Lighting System Around Your Home

Personal Protection Tip: Homeowners can make their homes less inviting to invaders by installing inexpensive low-voltage exterior lighting systems. Most "Do-It-Yourself" hardware stores carry them and can be set in place by most folks in under an hour or two.

Further, most systems can be set up on a timer to become active with the arrival of nightfall. Exterior lighting reduces the cover of darkness and makes it less likely that a well illuminated home will be targeted for an invasion.

High Local Rape Counts Spurs Activist To Host Community Safety Event At Detroit Church

Detroit Firearms Instructor will run a "Keep The Ladies Safe" event to certify women participants as eligible to submit Concealed Pistol License applications to the state of Michigan. In the first quarter of 2012, 274 rapes were reported in Detroit.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, MI - May 1, 2012 - Detroit firearms safety expert Rick Ector will conduct a state of Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) compliant training event for women on Saturday, May 19th, 2012. The event was conceived and planned by Ector as a direct result of the disclosure in the local media that 274 rapes occurred in the city of Detroit during the first quarter of 2012.

A CPL will enable the women to carry concealed firearms on their person or in their vehicles to use as a tool of last resort against the attacks of violent predators. According to Ector, he felt a need to lend his services to help safeguard the women of Detroit. He stated, "The current state of affairs with respect to public safety in our city is deplorable. Just the other week a woman cradling her baby in her arms while she was walking down the street in broad daylight was attacked by a would-be rapist. The victim managed to get away from his clutches but not before she was shot in the back. It is my hope to train and empower women in Detroit with skills to protect themselves. Detroit is not safe for women right now."

Ector has partnered with a local Detroit church - Fenkell Gospel Temple (2600 Fenkell Avenue, Detroit, MI) - to conduct this all day training event. Not only will women participants receive a discounted tuition rate but a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the church. Women interested in the training, should contact church representative Mr. Ken Kareem at (248) 469-6248.

Personal Protection Tip: Keep Your Vehicle In Good Operating Condition

Personal Protection Tip: A very good way to stay crime-free is to practice the art of avoidance. One pro-active tactic to employ is to keep your automobile in good operating condition. A stranded motorist is an excellent target for opportunistic predators.

Over the last couple of days in Detroit, a couple of drivers were victims of violent assaults. In one incident, a woman was accosted and sexually assaulted by a man pretending to be a law enforcement officer when he pulled behind her stalled car. Additionally, another motorist was robbed on the I-94 Freeway earlier today, as a couple of predators robbed him at gunpoint at his stalled van.
