FAQ: Does Michigan Recognize Constitutional Carry?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: Does Michigan recognize constitutional carry? Because Illinois may go that way by default.

A: No. Constitutional Carry is when a person can carry a firearm openly or concealed without a license. A CPL is required here to conceal carry a handgun.

By the way, if Illinois does indeed go "Constitutional Carry," that will probably mean that their state and ours will not have handgun carry reciprocity.

In addition, an even bigger issue for Illinois residents is that there would be nothing from stopping each city from creating their own municipal laws regarding firearms. In essence, the best result for gun rights would be for the Illinois lawmakers to get a law done that does not leave out Chicago.

You are strongly encouraged to not only conduct your own independent research but to also consult with a competent and qualified attorney before acting upon any information in this article. Laws covering self-defense, lethal force, firearms, and the Michigan Concealed Pistol License and their enforcement are always subject to change due to laws being amended, politics conducted in the Prosecutor's Office, and election results at all levels of government. Ignorance of the law, legally speaking, is not a valid excuse for running afoul of it. The penalties and fines imposed upon violators of firearms related offenses are stiff and severe.
