Personal Protection Tip: Never Be Somewhere You Don't Have A Legal Right To Be

Personal Protection Tip: A good way to increase your odds of staying safe is to never be somewhere you shouldn't be. Obvious examples would be deserted and abandoned structures, private property owned by another without permission to occupy, illegal "after hours" bars and other places where questionable activities have been known to occur.

Not only are these aforementioned places fertile locations for violent crimes to occur, but you may forfeit your legal right under Michigan law to defend to defend yourself. A person may not be able to use self-defense as a justification for lethal force "if he/she has no legal right to be there."

Personal Protection Tip: Don't Patronize Businesses With Loiterers On The Premises

Personal Protection Tip: Do not stop at or patronize any business that has loiterers on the premises. Loitering is the act of remaining on the premises of an establishment for no apparent reason.

Loiterers have been associated with illegal activity: graffiti, panhandling, robbery, prostitution, and drug-dealing. Popular locations for loitering include, but is not limited to, gas stations, diners, pharmacies, strip malls, and convenience stores.

If you see loitering activity at a place of business you wish to patronize, pass it by and give another more suitable establishment your business.

Personal Protection Tip: Stay Out Of Pistol-FREE Zones

Personal Protection Tip: Whenever feasibly possible avoid going to Pistol-FREE Zones (PFZs). PFZs are places where federal law, state law, or the private property owners have legally declared that all firearms are not allowed on the specified premises.

The reasoning behind this policy is based upon on the erroneous belief that everybody will comply. However, as time has repeatedly shown criminals and the mentally ill do not obey the law or follow rules. Thus, the only people carrying firearms in PFZs are bad actors.

As such, PFZs create a target rich environment for predators seeking to prey upon on unarmed law-abiding citizens. As a matter of public safety, stay out of PFZs whenever possible.

Personal Protection Tip: Never Leave An Event With A Stranger

Personal Protection Tip: Never leave an event with someone you just met regardless of how nice he seems to be, how well he behaves, or how nicely he dresses. Further, if you accompany a friend to an event do not allow that friend to leave with a stranger. If you came to the event together, you should leave the event together.

Every single day in the city of Detroit, there is one murder, three rapes, 57 robberies, and 97 aggravated assaults. If this new guy is as great as you believe him to be, he'll call you later.

Moreover, this tip isn't just directed towards women; plenty of men get victimized and robbed shortly after following a lady out of a bar or club.

Michigan CCW Classes Instructor Organizes Local Starbucks Appreciation Day On Valentines Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, MI – January 27, 2012 – Rick Ector, a Michigan Gun Rights Activist is organizing a local "Starbucks Appreciation Day" on Valentines Day in support of that corporation's published position on gun-owners patronizing their stores.

The Starbucks chain recently was targeted for a national boycott by an anti-gun group - National Gun Victim’s Action Council - for allowing local laws where their stores are located to determine whether gun owners can patronize its stores while armed. The boycott is scheduled to start on February 14th.

In response to the announced boycott, pro-gun advocacy groups all over the United States are launching a Starbucks Appreciation Day. As such, all gun owners who legally carry firearms will be asked to patronize the chain on Valentines Day in support of Starbucks' refusal to get dragged in the gun control debate by anti-gun groups.

Accordingly, Ector - a well known Carry Concealed Weapon/Concealed Pistol License (CCW/CPL) Instructor and Gun Rights Activist - is organizing a local event in support of Starbucks. His event - one of thousands expected across the country - will be held at the Royal Oak Starbucks which is located at 31105 Woodward Avenue, Royal Oak, MI, 48073 between the hours of 12 noon and 2:00pm. Afterwards, interested patrons will be visiting a local gun range - two blocks away - to shoot at targets.

Personal Protection Tip: Install A Video Monitoring And Surveillance System

Personal Protection Tip: An installed video surveillance and monitoring system may deter home-invaders from storming into your home and business. There are a variety of systems available that can crisply monitor and record images from your monitored location over the public Internet whereby you can tune in via a smart-phone.

Many insurance companies will give you a discount if you have this system setup at your home or business. Furthermore, this system will satisfy local law enforcement agencies who will no longer respond to burglary or home-invasion calls without verification, such as the Detroit Police Department.

If you have a desire to acquire a video monitoring system, contact Billy D. Reed of Secure-View CCTV at 734 846 1764 and mention my name - he'll give you a generous discount on your order.

Personal Protection Tip: Don't Act Like A Tourist

Personal Protection Tip: If you are visiting from another country, state, or neighborhood you can enhance your personal safety by not looking or acting like you have never been there. You may not be able to hide the fact that you have a non-Michigan license plate on your vehicle but you can do other things to avoid drawing attention to your yourself.

For one, dress appropriately for the venue and the event, don't walk around with a video recorder or camera on your neck, or pull out a map. Further, walk with a gait like you know where you are going and don't stare up at buildings and landmarks like you are "brand new." Moreover, do your homework and avoid having to ask strangers for directions. Engage in very little small-talk as we don't have much "Southern hospitality" here and don't tell strangers where you're from and where you are going.

Personal Protection Tip: Moving To A Safer Neighborhood May Make Sense

Personal Protection Tip: The city where you live is a factor as to whether you will be targeted for a violent crime by predators. While it is true that violent crime can and does happen everywhere, it is extremely rampant in the following cities identified by Governor Snyder in his State of the State speech: Saginaw, Flint, Pontiac, and Detroit.

Furthermore, violent crime rates can vary in certain parts of a city. For example, the 48205 zip code has been identified by U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade as being Detroit's deadliest sector.

Thus, if you are very serious about Personal Protection choose your residence carefully. If you are unable or unwilling to move, take other precautions to ensure your family's safety. There is no shame in leaving; half of Detroit's police and fire staff have already left for the suburbs.

Personal Protection Tip: Your Chosen Profession Can Lead To Your Victimization

Personal Protection Tip: Your chosen occupation can influence whether you will be a victim of crime. In general, the most dangerous jobs in America have at least one of three elements present: Contact with bad people, access to cash, and/or contact with the general public.

The most dangerous jobs in the Unites States are the following: urban cop, corrections officer, narcotics dealer, escort/prostitute, taxi cab driver, chauffeurs, deliverymen, and cashiers. If you wish to be as safe as possible, make a wise occupational choice.

Last Media Appearance: Rick Ector On The Charlie Langton Show

This past Monday - January 16th, 2012 - I made my first appearance on the "Charlie Langton Show" on station WXYT at radio frequency 1270 AM. I did two live segments starting at the 8:00am hour.

During the two segments over the air we covered a lot of interrelated topics: crime, Detroit homicide statistics, self-defense, personal protection, concealed carry of a firearm, open carry of a firearm, and others. It was a lot of fun and I would jump at the chance to make a future appearance.

Personal Protection Tip: Exercise Due Caution In Gas Stations And Parking Lots

Personal Protection Tip: Gas stations and parking lots are among the most dangerous places to be located. Be on high alert and keep strangers at a distance. Gas up during the day and minimize your trips there by filling up your tank when you do go to get gas. Avoid gas stations that have loiterers "hanging out" on the premises. It only takes one inattentive moment to be selected as a crime victim.

Personal Protection Tip: A Michigan Concealed Pistol License Is An Excellent Tool

Personal Protection Tip: A state of Michigan issued Concealed Pistol License (CPL) is an indispensible item to have in your Personal Protection Toolkit. It allows the specified Michigan resident to carry a concealed handgun in the state of Michigan and 39 other reciprocal states. A concealed handgun is not the answer to all of your problems but for specific issues posing a credible and imminent threat of great bodily harm, rape, and murder, it is an excellent option you can exercise to stay safe.

Personal Protection Tip: Always Leave Yourself "An Out"

Personal Protection Tip: When on the road and stopped at a traffic signal or stop sign, always leave yourself "an out" just in case you need to quickly leave the scene. For example, leave at least enough room between your car and the car in front of you so that you can see the other car's full rear tires.

In addition, when parking your vehicle in a lot make sure it is positioned so that upon your later exit you can quickly pull out with full visibility and not need to slowly back out of a parking space with impaired vision of approaching obstacles. Furthermore, also avoid fast-food drive-through lanes with those concrete barriers that prevent vehicles from leaving the line.

Personal Protection Tip: Beware of the "Bump and Rob/Rape" Tactic

Personal Protection Tip: Beware of the "Bump & Rob/Rape" Tactic whereby a predator will intentionally hit your your vehicle to stage a minor fender bender to get you to voluntarily exit your vehicle. If you are ever hit from behind, you need to quickly assess the environment and the specifics of the incident. If this incident doesn't feel right dial 9-1-1 and head to the nearest police station. Please note that if you are in Detroit, the police stations are closed to the public after 4pm. Instead, you should make your way to the nearest MSP Post, County Sheriff's Dept. and or other law enforcement agency.

Personal Protection Tip: Don't Over-Estimate Effectiveness of Pepper Spray Products

Personal Protection Tip: Don't overestimate the utility and effectiveness of pepper-spray. Some people are not significantly affected by relatively low levels of active ingredients found in the pepper-spray products that are legal for civilian use in Michigan due to natural immunities and being "amped-up" during an adrenaline rush. Furthermore, to even use the product you will need to be relatively close to the assailant which implies that not only can you be harmed by a physical attack but that you may accidentally spray and incapacitate yourself.

Personal Protection Tip: Whenever Possible, Use Valet Parking

Using the services of a valet parking attendant can give you an added layer of protection. The service will keep you from parking your vehicle in a remote and desolate area far from the venue you are attending. Parking lots are among the most dangerous places to be located. Furthermore, most valet stations are well lit and are populated with other people which may keep predators from selecting victims at that location.

Personal Protection Tip: Drink Responsibly While Out On The Town

Personal Protection Tip: There's nothing wrong with having drinks while out on the town. However, be responsible by staying under legal limits for your status and your own personal tolerance levels. Personal Protection Tip: Use Quality Deadbolt Locks On Exterior Doors

Personal Protection Tip: Install a quality heavy duty deadbolt lock with a good faceplate on your exterior doors. The average exterior door has a lock that can be kicked in by your average home-invader who has no qualms about coming into your home even if you are there. A good lock can slow him down enough for you to have time to execute your personal protection plan.
