Rick Ector Spoke at Detroit Church on the Importance of Firearm Safety in the Home

Rick Ector Spoke at Detroit Church on the Importance of Firearm Safety in the Home

This past Sunday - May 24th, 2015 - I spoke before the congregation at Jordan Missionary Baptist Church on the importance of Firearm Safety in the home.

A few weeks ago, the presiding pastor - Lenard McCray - had invited a grassroots gun rights organization (Michigan Gun Owners) to give a free seminar on safeguarding children from guns in the home. The seminar was not as well attended as the pastor would have liked but he saw the utility of offering this training to more members of his church at a later date.

He invited me and the other members of MGO on that occasion to come back to his church one day to speak during a future Sunday service. I took the pastor up on his invitation this past weekend and spoke. I was well received during my presentation AND I enjoyed the service that day as well.

If you have a church in the greater metro-Detroit area and would like either me, Michigan Gun Owners, or both to speak at your church on the importance of keeping kids safely away from firearms in the home, do not hesitate to contact us.

If you call, we'll be there. True story.

Paradox: Pragmatism Protects Predators

Paradox: Pragmatism Protects Predators
I am a Personal Protection Trainer. I teach people how to exercise a more active role in their safety. Predictably, my students are taught how to safely handle, carry, load, and discharge a pistol so that if they are ever imperiled they have options.
In addition, they are also taught the law so that by defending themselves they will be less likely to be civilly sued, be sent to prison, or both. What's the point of carrying a firearm to protect yourself if you are going to spend a decade or two in the Big House? Exactly. There is no point. Carrying a gun should make you safer than not carrying one.
However, more than anything else students are going to learn how to make good decisions. A good part of that decision making is not engaging in any activities that puts them at risk for being attacked. Avoidance is truly the best policy. So, if a person really wants to be as safe as possible he will not go to a gas station in Detroit - or any other city - after dark. I have said it for years and just today our police chief made that suggestion in the paper.
It is not fear that keeps well schooled lawful firearm carriers from dangerous venues. Rather it is simple pragmaticism. The best defense is not putting yourself in harm's way in the first place. Yes, it is tragically sad that a person desiring to do a legal activity at a legal place at a legal time "can't" do so because it is not wise. In a discussion online today a friend and I were discussing this very topic.
The consequences of shooting someone, even if justified, are serious enough that avoiding that legal scrutiny is certainly a preferable option, if possible.
The paradox is that the true practitioners of Personal Protection will by their very absence at various city hot spots will make not only themselves safer but will also make predators safer. And no, I am not calling on CPL-holders to be posted up in bad areas to make our city safer.
Rather, I am merely highlighting that training in awareness and behavior modification is every bit as important as safe firearm operation and knowing the law.
The best form of Personal Protection is the defense you do not have to mount because you made good decisions. True story.

Press Release: NRA Firearm Instructors Aim To Train 300 Detroit Area Women Without Cost

Press Release: NRA Firearm Instructors Aim To Train 300 Detroit Area Women Without Cost

For Immediate Release

Detroit Michigan CPL Class Instructor organizes event to provide a free shooting lesson event for women.

Detroit, MI, May 08, 2015 --(LAID.com)-- Legally Armed In Detroit, a gun rights advocacy web site, is announcing that it will provide a free shooting lesson at a southeast Michigan target range to a projected gathering of 300 women interested in learning more about firearms and personal protection.

There will be no charge for the Firearm Instructor's safety briefing, the usage of a firearm, ammunition, and range time. Participation is 100 percent for all attendees. No prior firearms training or experience is required of the women who desire to take advantage of the lesson. Further, experienced women merely desiring to improve their marksmanship skills are also welcome to attend.

The free shooting lesson offer was the brainchild of Rick Ector, an NRA Approved Firearms Trainer, after seeing a local television newscast of a young woman's body being discovered on an east-side Detroit street three years ago.

This year's event will be the fourth consecutive year it has been conducted. In the first year only 50 women were trained. However, last year the event grew sufficiently to teach 200 how to safely operate a pistol. This year's goal is 300 trained women during the eight hour event. It is only with the cooperation of Ector's fellow NRA Firearm Instructor colleagues and supporters across social media that this event could even be attempted and safely conducted.

Ector believes that there are many women in southeast Michigan who are curious about firearms and their role in self-defense but are reluctant to investigate due to fears. He said, "If giving women a free lesson by a credentialed professional translates into women just trying it, it'll be a productive use of my time."

Rick Ector is a National Rifle Association credentialed Firearms Trainer, who provides Michigan CCW/CPL Class training in metro-Detroit for students at his firearms school - Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit. Ector is a recognized expert in Firearm Safety and Personal Protection and has been featured extensively in the national and local media: Associated Press, National Public Radio, MSNBC, The Guardian, Townhall Magazine, The Politics Daily, and Aljazeera.

The ladies FREE shooting event will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the Target Sports Gun Range in Taylor, Michigan. FREE Advance Pre-registration is required for participation. Interested ladies should visit the following event page on Facebook for more info:

NRA Certified Firearm Instructor Training - June 6th - June 8th - Deadline Approaching!

NRA Certified Firearm Instructor Training - March 6th - March 9th, 2015

Do you have the knowledge and expertise to be an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor? Do you want to help your fellow citizens learn more about the fields of Firearm Safety and Personal Protection?
The NRA Education and Training Dept. is the gold standard in firearms education by which all others programs are measured. Answer the call by clicking the following link.https://www.facebook.com/events/345190385681696
Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit is announcing National Rifle Association (NRA) Certified Firearm Instructor Training Classes.
NRA Instructor Training Courses teach candidates how to teach firearm safety and shooting skills to others using the NRA instructional methodologies and training materials. The possession of basic shooting skills is a prerequisite for attending an instructor training class.
Instructor Candidates who successfully complete this program's requirements will then be certified as NRA Instructors. Accordingly, they would then be able to arrange and conduct both the NRA Basic Pistol Class and the NRA Personal Protection in the Home (CPL) Class.
All admitted Instructor Candidates will be in training for the following time periods:
1. Basic Instructor Training (BIT): 6 hours
2. Basic Pistol/PPITH: 25 hours
Total minimum classroom time for this program will be 31 hours. These 31 hours do not include the time needed to complete Pre-Program Requirements. The training will be conducted over a three (3) day period over a single weekend. The hours will be long.
Space in this training program will be extremely limited. NRA Education and Training Dept. Guidelines specify that an Instructor Class "should" have at least four (4) Candidates. If you wish to be admitted, you should not delay getting enrolled into the program. This program's enrollment can be halted at any time there are at least four people officially admitted into the program.
Pre-Program Requirements
1. Complete and Submit a Pre-Course Questionaire.
2. Successfully Demonstrate Safe Gun Handling.
3. Successfully Demonstrate Acceptable Shooting Skills.
4. Successfully Demonstrate Acceptable Firearm Safety.
5. Be able to legally possess firearms.
The Pre-Course Questionaire is located here ==>https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6BMJLRL
Note: Candidates may be given examinations to assess and test their knowledge. Candidates who do not meet the Pre-Program Requirements may be required to enroll in a basic student level course to improve their knowledge and skills to improve their chances of being admitted into the program at a later date.
Candidates may be charged a nominal Evaluation Fee to cover my time needed to proctor any Pre-Assessment Examinations and Shooting Evaluations. This fee is separate from any accrued range fees (e.g. Handgun Rental, Range Time, Ammo Cost, and etc.) Candidate will be assessed at a firing range. The Evaluation Fee has not yet been set but will be disclosed prior to the setting of appointments.
In theory, a Candidate might not be immediately eligible to enroll into the Instructor Program and may take a suggested basic class to build their skills and knowledge in time to take this program, subject to space and availability. Otherwise, Candidate would have to wait until the next scheduled program.
Program Requirements
1. Meet Pre-Program Requirements and Be Officially Admitted Into the Program.
2. Instructor Candidates must meet the following age requirements to be certified:
- Be at least 21 years of age to be certified as an Instructor.
- Be at least 18 years of age to be certified as an Asst. Instructor.
- Be at least 13 years of age but be less than 17 years of age to be certified as an Apprentice Instructor.
(No candidates under 17 will be admitted unless a parent is also admitted and is also taking the course.)
3. Instructor Candidates must also achieve the following minimum scoring percentage on their exams to be credentialed:
- Certified: 90 percent or higher
- Assistant: 85 percent or higher
- Apprentice: 85 percent or higher
Only NRA Certified Instructors are qualified to organize and conduct NRA classes.
4. Be an active participant in all assigned class exercises.
5. Observe all declared safety rules. Violators will be ejected from the program without a tuition reimbursement.
6. Pay the tuition deposit for the class in advance.
- For Admitted Candidates who wish to pay in full in advance, the total tuition price will be $600 USD.
Use this link to pay tuition in full ($600): http://tinyurl.com/NRAInstructorFull
- For Admitted Candidates who wish to reserve a seat in the class, by paying a deposit of half, the total tuition will be $750 USD. Half ($375 USD) is due immediately and the remaining payment ($375 USD) is due on the first day of class.
Use this link to pay tuition deposit of $375:
http://tinyurl.com/NRAInstructorHalf
- For Admitted Candidates who wish to pay over more time, an option at a higher total price may be setup via PayPal to accommodate them. This option may not be available later.

- An Unloaded Firearm with OWB Holster

A venue change does not entitle participants to a refund.
The following are tentative hours of class:
- Friday, March 6th, 2015: 5pm thru 11pm
- Saturday, March 7th, 2015: 7am thru 8pm

The Training Counselor (me) reserves the right to modify starting times and ending times, as deemed necessary.
Currently, there are no plans to offer this program at a later during this calendar year. That decision would be based, in part, by the popularity of this current class. If you want to be a NRA Firearm Instructor, you should not delay. Space is limited and enrollment can be halted at any time.

The Facebook event page for our 4th Annual FREE Shooting Event For Women serves as a notification tool for our annual community service event - FREE firearm shooting lesson for 300 women.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Joining that page does NOT serve as registration for the event. That page is a tool to make sure that all interested women will have a place to both receive notification of the signup period and will know where the registration links are located.
Based on the signup volume the last three years, this event will fill up quickly. I only ask that if you can't commit to being at the event, then please do not signup. Doing so, will prevent another woman from being trained.
The event will held on Sunday, May 17th, 2015. Registration will not start until 12 noon on May 10th to reduce the number of no-shows and give everyone a fair chance to sign up for the free shooting lesson.
Registration will be done over the Internet. We do not have the manpower to take registrations over the phone. The registration links will be published on this page at 12 noon on May 10th.
There will be three different time slots for women to select and choose. It is the same format as last year. You can only select and register for ONE time slot. Each time slot will have an equal number of openings. Once you select a time slot, you can not change it. If you can't firmly commit to being at the event, please do not register for any time slots. We will use that capacity for someone who can promise to be there.
The time slots will be the following:
10am - 12noon
12:01 pm - 2:00pm
2:00 pm - 4pm
The registration links for each time slot will be posted prominently on the top of the event page.
MAKE SURE YOU CLICK THE JOIN "BUTTON" ON THE EVENT PAGE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED!!!!!!!
This event will be 100 percent FREE for women who sign up during the enrollment period. Our goal is to train 300 ladies how to safely operate a 9mm handgun. All materials will be provided: handgun, ammo, range time, and coaching.
The venue will be at Target Sports - 22509 Ecorse Rd, Taylor, MI 48180. The time of the event will be published when the signup links are published.

Rick Ector Talks Guns with Bishop Charles H. Ellis on an "Hour of Empowerment"

Rick Ector Talks Guns with Bishop Charles H. Ellis on an "Hour of Empowerment"

Last week, I made an appearance on a brand new radio show entitled, "An Hour of Empowerment. The show is hosted by Pentecostal Bishop Charles H. Ellis.

On the show, Bishop Ellis and I discussed at length a variety of subjects within the spectrum of gun rights. We discussed whether the Second Amendment was still relevant today, the responsibility that goes along with carrying a firearm, the thought process of making the decision to carry, whether black people have equal gun rights in America, the "Stand Your Ground Law" and how it differs from a "Duty to Retreat", and the history of Gun Control.

I enjoyed sharing my expertise with Bishop Ellis' audience. Click the link below to check out the show!

Rick Ector Appearance on "Armed American Radio" with Host Mark Walters

On April 26th, I once again made another appearance on the "Armed American Radio Show" tonight with host Mark Walters. The topics of discussion included Gun Rights, Personal Protection, and of course Armed Americans. It was an awesome great show.

We spent a considerable amount of time talking about one of my favorite topics - Constitutional Carry. Listen to the recording to learn what it is and why lovers of freedom should try to get in enacted in your state.
