Rick Ector Goes "One Round With Darrell Dawsey" On The Renisha McBridge Case

One Monday, November 25th, 2013, I accepted an invitation to appear on a local talk show - "One Round With Darrell Dawsey." Like a prizefight, the videotaped conversation was slated to be three minutes on a hot local Detroit topic.

Dawsey is a reporter with the web site entitled "Deadline Detroit." The subject of this video was an analysis of the Renisha McBride shooting that happened earlier this month in the city of Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

If you recall, the victim knocked on the door of a residence at 3:30am and was shot fatally while on the porch. Check out the video to see what I (Rick Ector) and Mr. Dawsey have to say on the subject.

What Is The Total Financial Cost To Start Lawfully Protecting Yourself With A CPL In Michigan?

What Is The Total Financial Cost To Start Lawfully Protecting Yourself In Michigan With A CPL?

Every once in a while, I field a phone call from a prospective student who wants to know how much is "all of this" going to cost him. Of course, I can't answer such a general question so easily. The bare minimum cost for one to start defending themselves legally with a concealed pistol might be different for everyone.

First, we need to factor in the cost of a bona fide Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Class. There is a lot of diversity in prices among providers. In my personal opinion, the lowest amount you will pay for a legitimate class is $100. If  someone is asking you to pay less than that, check their agenda versus the statutory requirement.

I once had a guy who told me that he took his first CPL Class for $200 in the back of a van parked in front of his house. Hindsight being 20/20, he referred his girlfriend to my class instead of that guy's class. He wants to make sure she knows everything she needs to know, like the laws on firearms usage and lethal force.

Our class tuition is $150. Of course, we provide a better class. Unlike the low-ball artists, we actually have a well respected legal authority - a noted local criminal defense lawyer - teach the legal section of the class. I send a constant stream of referrals - who took the low ball class - to my attorney to bail people out of trouble because they did something that they were NOT told NOT to do in the bargain basement priced class. You get what you pay for or as I like to say you don't get what you didn't pay for.

Second, you will need to pay your CPL Application fee to your local County Clerk. It is going to be $105. That price is set by the statute and is not up for debate. You either pay it or you will not be getting a CPL.

The next requisite purchase is going to be an actual handgun. If you already have one and its caliber is less than 9mm, you need to buy a bigger caliber handgun. I estimate that one should spend about $500. With that amount of money, you can possibly get a used Glock 17, a Springfield XD, a S&W M&P, a Taurus, or a Ruger. Please do not spend $175 on a Keltec and believe that you have a fine firearm.

Of course, you are going to need accessories. Which accessories you buy now versus later is up to you. You will definitely need some type of holster, some defensive JHP ammo, and a cleaning kit. If you are reading this article, you are probably pinching too many pennies to be interested in a whole host of other stuff that I would strongly endorse that you buy.

However much you spend, your safety and life is worth it. True story.

7 Seven Facts About Carjackings in Detroit You Need To Know

7 Facts About Detroit Carjackings You Need To Know

Detroit Police Department Chief James Craig created a stir in the city when he admitted that he perceived that he was almost a victim of an attempted carjacking while sitting in  police car. The disclosure was made at a "Carjacking Awareness" presentation to members of the public who were present.

Within the presentation was some alarming carjacking statistics that I, as a Firearms Instructor, feel need to highlighted.

First, as of that day - Monday of last week - there had been 582 carjackings in the city of Detroit. By using a Julian calendar, I did the calculation to determine that exactly 1.97 - roughly two - carjackings happen, on average, every single day in Detroit. If you extrapolate at the current rate, there will be about 719 carjackings in the city for the year.

Other interesting tidbits of trivia included the fact that most carjackings in Detroit happen between dusk and dawn, usually occur on the weekend (Friday through Sunday), and reached their zenith in terms of  the number occurrences during the month of December.

Another startling bit of info that was disclosed included an eye-opening stat: A carjacker who aims a firearm will discharge it 85 percent of the time. If more people knew that, it would encourage them, in my opinion, to go out and get Michigan Concealed Pistol Licenses (CPL).

Detroit Police Chief Discloses Dismal Violent Crime Case Closure Percentages at Bankruptcy Hearing

On October 25th, Detroit Chief of Police James Craig disclosed some startling violent crime statistics at a recent court proceeding. The aforementioned court appearance was the third day of sworn testimony in a federal bankruptcy proceeding to determine if the city of Detroit is eligible for bankruptcy protection from its creditors.

Chief Craig was invited to testify because of his position. As such, he claimed that citizens of the city are not getting the services they should because of the deplorable working conditions under which officers must cope while working.

Presumably, the poor working conditions might, at least partially, explain the department's difficulty in solving violent crimes in Detroit.

Craig disclosed that the department's homicide clearance percentage was at 11% and that the department's robbery clearance percentage was at 8%. Those numbers were described by the Chief as "deplorable" and "extremely low," respectively.

A clearance percentage is the percentage of applicable cases that have been investigated by the police department which resulted in a warrant request being sent to the County Prosecutor.

Accordingly, the Detroit Police Department is not doing a very good of solving crimes, As such, as a local Firearms Instructor working in Detroit, I strongly endorse that local citizens take on a more active role in their personal safety. In many cases, that is best done with a legally carried handgun.

Crime Prevention: Unaware Citizen of the Day #5 - Man Sitting at Bus Stop

During my travels, I encounter people who are unaware of their surroundings in public. Unaware citizens are prime targets for an attack by a predator.

As a Firearms Instructor, I'll be the first to tell you that there is more to the field of personal protection than carrying a firearm.

In fact, I'll go record to say that "awareness" is paramount in your goal of staying safe. Predators like easy targets, so keep your head on a swivel.

Today's entry features an oblivious man sitting at a bus stop with his back facing a parking lot - dangerous places to be. Unaware targets attract predators.
