FAQ: Which US States Recognize Michigan's Concealed Pistol License?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: Hey Rick, Which states recognize our CPL License? And if the list is too long to post where can I find it? As a summer traveler, I want to be legal.

A: Our Michigan Attorney General has the responsibility of negotiating conceal carry reciprocity agreements with other states. Fortunately for us, Michigan has what is known a "full reciprocity" which means that our carry permit is good in every "shall issue" state.

As of May 7th, 2013, the following 39 other US states that recognize Michigan's CPL are listed as the following: Alabama,  Alaska,  Arizona,  Arkansas,  Colorado,  Delaware,  Florida,  Georgia,  Idaho,  Indiana,  Kansas,  Kentucky,  Louisiana,  Minnesota,   Mississippi,  Missouri,  Montana,  Nebraska,  Nevada,  New Hampshire,  New Mexico,  North Carolina,  North Dakota,  Ohio,  Oklahoma,  Pennsylvania,  South Carolina,  South Dakota,  Tennessee,  Texas,  Utah,  Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and  Wyoming.

Also, please keep in mind that when visiting a reciprocal state, you must "Do as the Romans do." In other words, it is your responsibility to know and obey the gun laws in those states when visiting.

Disclaimer
You are strongly encouraged to not only conduct your own independent research but to also consult with a competent and qualified attorney before acting upon any information in this article. Laws covering self-defense, lethal force, firearms, and the Michigan Concealed Pistol License and their enforcement are always subject to change due to laws being amended, politics conducted in the Prosecutor's Office, and election results at all levels of government. Ignorance of the law, legally speaking, is not a valid excuse for running afoul of it. The penalties and fines imposed upon violators of firearms related offenses are stiff and severe.
