Michigan Open Carry Seminar Recap - Saturday, Jan. 29th, 2011

This past Saturday afternoon (January 29th 2011), Michigan Open Carry Inc. (MOC), conducted yet another free Open Carry seminar. The venue this time was the Taylor MI Gander Mountain, whose management/ownership is decidely pro-Open Carry.

The seminar was well attended; roughly 50 visibly gun-toting citizens were present. The presentation was roughly three hours long, which seemed to fly by quickly. MOC lead officers, Scott Webb (President) and Robert Harris (Vice-President), did an awesome job of educating attendees on how to successfully and legally open carry a pistol both with and without a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL).

I've been open carrying for a while and I still seem to manage to pick up a nuance in the laws regarding the lawful carrying of firearm. I plan to have a FREE Open Carry seminar within the city limits of Detroit very soon. Keep your eyes open for an announcement on this blog.

In addition, as always, attending these events is a great way to network and fellowship with persons in the region who OC on a regular basis. Check out some of the pictures that I took from the event.

You should join us at the next event. Visit the MOC web site and become a member!

Lessons For Citizens To Learn From The Detroit Sixth Precinct Shoot-Out Video

This afternoon, Detroit Police Department (DPD) Chief Ralph Godbee released the video which detailed the one-man armed assault, conducted by Lamar D. Moore, upon the Sixth Precinct last Sunday afternoon.

On that fateful day, Moore armed with a shotgun, shot four police officers before being fatally shot and killed justifiably by retaliating police officers. The four injured officers are expected to recover from their injuries.

Godbee, who apparently has never heard the acronym 'FOIA,' stated that the video was released in the interest of transparency, to display examples of heroism within the Department, to show citizens the real dangers that police officers can potentially face while on duty, and to provide law enforcement departments around the country with a real life training aid.

As a Firearms/Personal Protection Trainer, it was not "lost on me" that Godbee failed to list another worthy and credible reason to release the video: to educate citizens locally and nationally of the dangers they face in our free and open society.

Of course, taking such a stance might lead to a discussion about what area residents can do to make themselves safer - just mere weeks after the Department's last gun buy-back which was billed as an activity to make Detroit safer.

Further, DPD was also recently proclaiming that their statistics prove that homicides and non-fatal shootings are significantly down relative from last year. In my view, DPD's statistics have perennially lacked credibility, even before ex-DPD Chief Warren Evans admitted that as much as 25% of reported calls - those which happened at shift change - were not being documented.

In Detroit, where DPD "top brass" is decidedly anti-gun, that conversation - empowering citizens - will never have any meaningful substance. Firearms, in their view, are best left to the professionals - police officers.

In fact, I recently had an informal discussion with a high ranking female, associated with DPD, who actually told me - in her personal view - that it is better for a woman to be raped than to be forced to shoot a rapist, who could die as a result. Her view is that the woman, after a time, would recover from the sexual assault.

In spite of DPD's thoughts on the lawful ownership and possession of firearms by law-abiding citizens, I have viewed the released video and want to share what non-police officers should learn from this incident.

Lesson One: A Violent Outburst of Violence Can Occur Anywhere

After viewing the released video, it is safe to assume that everyone has been put on notice that violence can occur anywhere - even in a police precinct which is heavily populated with armed police officers.

It is ironic that this event happened in a moment of time in our state at which two bills - HB 4009 and HB4010 have been officially submitted to the Michigan House for consideration. These bills, if eventually enacted into law, would abolish so-called "Pistol-Free Zones" (PFZ).

The basic premises behind these two bills is that police officers can't be everywhere and that criminals do not obey the law and will illegally carry firearms in PFZs anyway. Thus, it only makes sense to allow law-abiding citizens the opportunity to defend themselves against predators.

Lesson Two: A Predator Can't Be Persuaded With Dialogue To Stop His Attack

A predator with evil intent can't be persuaded to stop his attack. He has a goal to meet and you (i.e. the victim) are "the means" to his ends. If you are selected for victimization, the attack - whether it is a rape, robbery, or a murder - will happen unless the selected victim can make him stop.

When Moore went to the Sixth Precinct, he had bad intentions. His plan was to walk into a populated police precinct and shoot officers on duty until they fulfilled his "Death-by-Cop" agenda. Once Moore demonstrated his violent intent, there was only one to make him stop. Brave armed officers stopped Moore.

If a predator attacks you, you have the option of using self-defense to make him stop. The real issue, in such an event, is whether you are equipped and have been trained to do so.

You Will Need To Have The Defensive Mindset To Stop A Predator

If you are ever selected for victimization by a predator, you will need to possess a certain mindset to wage the battle for your personal protection. Your mindset must be one in which you acknowledge that although you did not ask for the confrontation, you will prevail by doing whatever is required.

There are no guarantees in a gunfight. For principally that reason, the usage of a firearm is a tool of last resort. In the defense of your safety or your life, you may be injured, up to and including death.

While watching the video, the actions of Cmdr. Brian Davis could be summed up in one word: Warrior.

At one point during the confrontation, he was literally inches away from a shotgun wielding Moore while armed only with a pistol. Instead of folding, he fought for his life and the safety of his fellow officers. Ultimately, he was injured but he lived and never quit. The mindset, exhibited by Cmdr. Brian Davis, is one that you need while fighting for your life.

He should be given a medal.

What Did We Learn? What Will We Do?

In the end, I hope that much will be learned from the released video. I suspect, however, that it will be used politically by the DPD. I hope that I am proven wrong. For indeed, it would be a travesty if DPD used the depraved actions of a single madman to literally and metaphorically erect barriers between it and the public it serves.

Furthermore, I hope that the general public takes note of the lessons that I shared in this post. Detroit police officers do face real dangers in the streets but I refuse to believe that they are more vulnerable to violent crime than the average citizen who reside here. Residents would be wise to assume a greater role in their personal protection during these perilous times.

Detroit Police Sixth Precinct Shooting/Shoot-out Video From Last Sunday - 4 Officers Shot - January 23, 2011

Here's the video that everybody has wanted to see. It details part of the scene in which a crazy man (Lamar Moore), armed with a shotgun, attacked police officers at the Sixth Precinct in Detroit, MI last Sunday - January 23, 2011. Four officers were shot; they are expected to fully recover. The lone gunman was shot and killed.

Consider this proof that "YOU" are not safe anywhere. Violence can break out anywhere and at any time - even in a Detroit Police Station.

The only reason why no officers died during this unprovoked attack was because they were armed and they made the conscious decision to fight for their lives.

Are you willing to fight for your life?

Last Media Appearance: Fox News Detroit's "Let It Rip" - January 28, 2010

I was featured in a segment on Fox News Detroit's "Let It Rip" show tonight. The issue at hand was the recent introduction of two Michigan House Bills - numbered 4009 and 4010 - which would eliminate our state's Pistol-FREE Zones. Of course, folks in the gun rights community refer to them as "Criminal Empowerment Zones."

If you know anything about me, you already know where I stand on this issue. I have embedded the video from the show below:

The Michigan Open Carry Inc. Dinner Recap in Royal Oak Michigan - 1/26/2011

On January 26th, Michigan Open Carry Inc. sponsored a dinner at the Avenue Family Restaurant in Royal Oak, Michigan. As of press time of this post, the official count of participants hasn't been published; I'm estimating that we had 35 members in attendance tonight. Thus, we had a great turn-out.

One of the great things about event such as these, for me personally, is that I get to see some folks in the gun community that I don't see too often. I'm not going to name-drop, because there is always the chance of leaving somebody out of the list. But there is a great sense of comraderie that you only experience when you dine and fellowship with others who share the same vision as you.

I joked often on that night that it is really cool to hang out with "normal" people. Of course, we need to agree on a friendly definition as to what "normal" means. I open carry often but many "regular" folks in the general population do not for a variety of reasons: hate guns, ignorant of the law, apathy, and etc.

When my visible pistol is seen by some, I may get a few interesting reactions - nothing over the top but still interesting. At Open Carry dinners, I can show my hardware and know the everyone there understands why I open carry.

Michigan Open Carry Inc. is a gun rights advocacy organization that promotes the "open carry" of a firearm on your person. In Michigan, it is completely legal to display a registered pistol (in your name) in a holster without a special permit, as long as you do not venture into a state enumerated pistol-free zone.

One interesting feature of Michigan law is that persons with a Concealed Pistol License (CCW/CPL) can legally open carry in a pistol-free zone, as long the owner doesn't mind. The establishment where we dined didn't have a liquor license, so it was a non-issue for attendees who did not have a CPL.

The food was great - The conversation was great. The event was a huge success. I look forward to next dinner that we promote.

The Tigh Croff Case: It Could've Happened To Me

I have followed Tigh Croff's saga through the criminal justice system with active interest, from the time he was first arrested and charged in connection with a shooting in 2009 - all the way until his eventual manslaughter conviction by his second jury last week. My interest in his case stems, in part, because the events that happened to him could have easily happened to me if only a few entirely possible events had transpired.

If you're not familiar with my other posts on his case, let me get you up to speed. At the end of 2009, Croff a 31 year-old Detroit resident with a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) arrived home one night to discover that two criminals were burglarizing his residence. It was widely reported that his home had been "broken into" a few times in the prior week.

According to testimony by the police, Croff chased Silas down the street with one firearm in each hand while "letting off" shots - some of which not only missed his target but hit neighboring homes. Some time thereafter, a winded Silas, stopped running and raised his hands to surrender.

Silas, reportedly, asked Croff mockingly, "What are you going to do shoot me?" It was then at this point that Croff confirmed his response by shooting Silas in the chest one time with a 9mm caliber handgun. Silas died and Croff was carted off to jail to face criminal charges.

Croff's jury in the first case ended in a hung jury. Half of his peers, on a panel of twelve, refused to convict him. In fact, the jury's foreman was so bold as to predict that no subsequent juries in any future trials would ever convict Croff. Of course, we know today that the foreman's prediction was false. However, at the time I actually agreed with him.

I am well aware of the state of Michigan's statutes on the lawful usage of lethal force. It is my honest opinion, that Croff crossed the line when he chased down Silas and shot him dead. However, as a life-long resident of the city of Detroit, I am also aware of the high level of frustration that law-abiding citizens here have with crime and an apparent broken criminal justice system.

The working theory on Croff from many observers, on his actions on the night of the shooting, was that he mentally snapped "in the heat of the moment" and made an emotional decision to depart from lawful conduct. That theory, applied to he specifics of Croff's case, is a textbook example of the crime defined as manslaughter.

I have a different take on Croff's behavior on the night of the shooting. I believe that his conduct was willful and conscious, but ill-informed. I believe that his actions on that night is indicative of a person who did not know the laws on lethal force and self-defense.

You're probably wondering at this point, how would Croff - a CPL holder - not know the law? After all, the laws on lethal force and self-defense are taught in the class that a person has to take before they can even apply for a CPL. That eventuality can happen in one of two different ways: he either knowingly or unknowingly took a bad class.

Some people knowingly take a "hook-up" class that is obviously deficient to the state of Michigan statute which governs the issuance of CPLs. Many times, these shady operators will "sell" a certificate to a buyer for as little as $50.

I've heard many rumors, none of which I can substantiate, that members of the law enforcement community are the chief providers of this "service." I can't prove it; it's just what I have heard from a litany of folks, over the years, who confessed to me that a "cop hooked me up."

Some of these "crooks" will even give the buyer a general overview of what a person should learn on their own later. It should be noted that it is a four year felony to knowingly present a fraudulent training certificate to a County Gun Board. It is also a four year felony to issue a fraudulent certificate to a CPL applicant. Both acts are also subject to a fine not to exceed $2,500 per offense.

Moreover, it is also possible for a person to unknowingly take a "bad" class. Several years ago, I personally and unknowingly took a bad class. At the time, I had been recently robbed at gunpoint in my own driveway and was looking for a service provider to train me. The very first one that I saw advertising this training was on a vehicle in front of me at red traffic signal. I called the number, got the info, and went to the class on the very next day.

Knowing what I know now, I would have done my homework. I should have actually taken the time to read the law and compared the statutorily defined requirements with the agenda of the class that I was considering as a training option. However, I didn't. At the time, I didn't realize how much that I didn't know. I blindly trusted the training service to provide with me with state of Michigan compliant CPL training. The guy I trusted to train me, lied to me. I just didn't know it then.

The actual training class I took was a "real" class; it just wasn't the right class. During the class, which was at least eight hours long, I learned a lot of things about firearms that I didn't know. So, it wasn't a total loss. The down-side was that I didn't learn what I was supposed to learn. The most important of which was learning the state of Michigan's laws on lethal force and self-defense.

Thus, when I actually received my CPL in the mail from the County Clerk's Office, I was just one ill-informed "incident" away from being where Tigh Croff sits today - out on bond awaiting sentencing on a pair of felony criminal convictions.

On the night of Croff's shooting incident, he allegedly did some things that I confidently feel that I wouldn't have done now that I know the law. He reportedly chased a man off his property and continued to chase him for a full block or more while shooting his handguns.

He also shot a man, who reportedly by his very own admission, who did not pose a threat to his safety. Furthermore, he fully cooperated with law enforcement officers and made statements without an attorney which were efficiently used against him during both of his court cases.

These actions, in my opinion, do not ring congruent with a person who took a bona fide CPL Class. They sound like the actions of a man, armed with two handguns and a CPL, who acted in accordance to what he thought the law "should be" instead of what it actually states.

His full cooperation with investigating police officers without counsel is proof, to me, that he thought his actions were justified. They weren't. They were so over the top unlawful that at the time of the shooting, Assistant DPD Chief Ralph Godbee was quoted in the media as saying, "There's a Dirty Harry element to this case."

In the end, I believe that Croff was a victim too. By all accounts, he is a "stand-up" guy who worked as a security guard, maintained a residence, and was active in his local community. He was concerned about the possibility of being a crime victim and did the responsible thing for a person wanting to assume responsibility for his personal safety - take a firearms safety class and get a CPL. In my opinion, he probably got scammed into taking the wrong one and now faces up to 15 years in prison for his manslaughter conviction.

Don't get me wrong, his actions, in my opinion, were wrong. I also believe that he didn't know that his actions were criminal. He's a victim too.

What happened to Tigh Croff could've happened to me. I was lucky. I continued my firearms education and training. I eventually became an National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer. I addressed and corrected my deficiencies.

How many other Tigh Croffs are there among us?

Are you potentially one of them?

The Detroit Police Department Should Not Erect Barriers Between Themselves And The Public They Serve

One of the costs of living in a free society is that citizens are never perfectly safe from peril. A seemingly random outburst of unprovoked violence can occur anywhere at any time - even in a Detroit Michigan Police Precinct. Earlier today, roughly less than two weeks after the tragedy in Tuscon Arizona, a lone gunman armed with a shotgun attacked several police officers at a local Detroit police station.

No information has been officially released about the lone assailant, other than the fact that he was shot and killed by retaliating police officers. According to Detroit Chief of Police Ralph Godbee, at a hastily called press conference, four police officers - including a Commander - were shot in the gun fight. All are expected to recover.

One of the more interesting revelations, in my opinion, that was delivered at the press conference was the announcement that the Detroit Police Department (DPD) has now undertaken the task of reviewing its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with respect to screening the "general public" before they enter DPD facilities.

One given justification for the DPD policy review was the shooting incident in Tuscon Arizona, in which US Congresswoman Giffords along with 12 other people was shot. Apparently, the sudden reality of violence against symbols of authority has DPD Brass concerned. I hope that after their internal review has been completed, DPD will make an astute conclusion and avoid the temptation of making a flawed but politically motivated decision - barricading themselves from the public they serve.

The Tuscon Shooting has a couple of lessons to be learned. One lesson, already mentioned in this post, is that violence can occur anywhere and at any time. In Tuscon, the shooting occurred in a venue ironically named "Safeway," which functioned as a site for a political appearance for a sitting federal legislator. Here, locally, a violent outburst occurred in a populated police station.

The other major lesson to be learned, which is not being seriously discussed in our country, is that we have dangerous people in our society who are not being addressed. In the Tuscon Shooting, we have been put on notice that we have a need to address dangerous mentally ill folks among us. The shooter in that case was well known to have mental issues but everyone cowardly refused to act until after he carried out his nefarious plot.

In Detroit, we have our share of structural issues that have contributed to our perpetually high rate of violence. The causes are numerous and are well documented: a failed public school system, a poor economic climate, over-flooded prisons in which dangerous inhabitants are frequently unleashed upon the local community, and a police department with 1,000 fewer officers less than it had just six years ago.

In truth, with all of the chaos that exists in the city of Detroit currently, we shouldn't be totally shocked that an obviously disturbed or criminally-minded person conducted a one-man assault upon a police station today. Further still, folks who make it their business to understand, hunt, and prosecute predators know that installing metal detectors at police stations will not deter a person intent upon committing an evil act.

An evil man, armed with a shotgun, with the goal of killing police officers will not be deterred by a screening station. He would simply ignore it and shoot anybody who presented themselves as a target. Considering the fact that this assault happened at a police station, it is a little surprising that he was able to shoot four officers before being stopped. The key point here is that there were armed people - albeit police officers - present who rose to the occasion of defending themselves.

If DPD does erect a barrier between themselves and the public they serve, they would be disrespecting the very public whom they serve. Citizens, who were already presumably victimized by an at-large predator in the street, would feel even worse as their very own public servants slap them in the face with the indignity of having to undergo the process of being searched. Going to the police station to file a report has suddenly become a hassle.

Furthermore, one unintended consequence of erecting a barrier between the public and the police would be the very act of making them less safe. Generally speaking, police departments would become de facto pistol-free zones, despite not being statutorily defined as such, in current Michigan law.

If you recall, it's only a few years since a very well known local Firearms Instructor made an appearance in national news headlines when he was forced to use lethal force to legally defend himself - literally - while in front of DPD Headquarters.

The brave and correct decision would be for DPD to NOT erect barriers - physical and political - between them and their public. Law-abiding citizens will obey the law and the criminals will not. It's always been that way and it will always be that way. If we had screening stations in place today, police officers would have still been shot.

The key difference between this incident and the shooting in Arizona is that there were armed citizens around who saved the lives of others - their fellow officers - by using their firearms. Guns save lives. Please do not disarm and enable city residents to be ripe for victimization in your unsafe parking lots.

In our free society, the best option we have for protection against dangerously mentally ill folks and violent predators is our ability and desire to assume total responsibility for our safety. Firearms enable us to do that. Please do not disarm us.

What do you think?

Detroit Michigan CCW Classes Instructor Uploads 1,650th Video To Own Youtube Channel

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, Michigan – Jan. 23, 2011 – Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer based in Detroit Michigan, has just uploaded his 1,650th produced video to his own Youtube Channel.

From the very first time that Rick Ector has taught a Firearm Safety Training Class, he has been recording snippets from his lecture and uploading them to Youtube. Thus, it has taken him roughly four years to produce, edit, and upload 1,650 video snippets that range in length from 30 seconds to almost 10 minutes.

The content of the videos covers the gamut from basic fundamental firearm safety rules, accepted rules for using and properly storing a firearm, and how to safely and accurately hit your designated at a gun range.

Ector states that his uploaded videos are one way that he has chosen to give something back to his community. "If only one video educates just one citizen to behave more responsibly with his firearm, then this gargantuan effort would be worth it. Let's face it: All gun owners are in the same boat, as the actions of one colors the impression of the others. So, let's get educated and prove that we are responsible citizens."

Rick Ector is a National Rifle Association credentialed Firearms Trainer, who provides Michigan CCW Class training in Detroit for students at his firearms school - Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit. Ector is a recognized expert in firearm safety and has been featured extensively in the national and local media: Associated Press, UPI, NRAnews, Guns Digest, Tactical-Life, The Truth About Guns, The Politics Daily, Fox News Detroit, The Detroit News, The Detroit Examiner, WJLB, WGPR, and the UrbanShooterPodcast.

Another Look At The Tigh Croff Case

A couple of days ago, Tigh Croff was convicted of manslaughter for the death of Herbert Silas during a shooting incident that transpired in December of 2009. I had been following this saga for a while, but lost track of it due to other attention-grabbing incidents transpiring in this town; there's always another violent encounter to dissect, discuss, and try in the Court of Public Opinion.

I first heard about Croff's conviction, in the second trial, by a local TV reporter who wanted my comment on the outcome. I gave my honest reaction to this case which garnered a lot of public sympathy for the defendant. After a while, it finally dawned on me that the reporter was "fishing" for a salient quote to pan citizens who have Michigan Concealed Pistol Licenses, such as Croff.

As fate would have it, I have done enough media interviews to know when I am being exploited. No story featuring that angle appeared on that TV station, so I was relieved that the Croff case did not serve as "ammunition" for another attack on gun rights and lawful firearm ownership. This case is about the legality of the actions that Croff did and no one else.

However, the reporter's contact with me did cause me to pause and reflect on both the circumstances of the shooting and the eventual conviction.

On that eventful night, Croff reportedly arrived to his home, which had been burglarized three times in the prior week, to discover that two men were in the act of carting off his personal property.

Detroit is a violent town. I am not going to sugar-coat that fact for any apologists among us who are still embarrassed when the latest tragedy that happens in this town makes national news. I am so past folks in the national media "picking on Detroit." I am numb to criticism from outsiders. I want solutions. I don't care who offers them. I don't care from where they come.

Detroit is a city where teenagers rape 90 year-old women for kicks. It is a town where, on average, one forcible rape occurs every single day. At this very moment, DPD is conducting an investigation to determine if one of ten men it has in custody is guilty of sexually attacking eight women since the start of this calendar year. Additionally, in the preceding summer of the time period of the Croff shooting, another serial rapist had the east-side of Detroit in a state of terror. That rapist was convicted, a week ago, of 30 separate charges across five different cases.

Croff apologists are fed up with crime. They are also fed up with the local police department's inability to keep up with the criminals. DPD, according to a report I heard today, has 1,000 fewer officers on roll than it did a mere six years ago. A patrol cop's day is literally spent running from crime scene to crime, many times arriving too late to make a difference. They lack resources they need to do their job. We all know that. Criminals, however, could care less about DPD staffing issues.

Six members of Croff's first jury were probably fed up with crime and wanted to send a message to the criminals of our town. It appears that they were only too willing to turn a blind eye to the circumstances of the case. In Michigan, it is a crime to shoot someone who is not posing an imminent threat to your safety. The second jury, however, did its duty and found Croff guilty of manslaughter.

What are your thoughts on the case?

Detroit Michigan CCW Classes Instructor Offers A Solution To City's Rapist Problem

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, Michigan – Jan. 17, 2011 – Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer based in Detroit Michigan, is offering a solution to the city's rapist problem that he says is not being discussed publicly.

The Detroit Police Department (DPD) has confirmed that a single rapist on the east-side of the city has attacked eight different women since January 1rst. A litany of measures have been adopted, such as citizen patrols, allowing women to wait for buses at police stations, and admonishing women to be aware of their surroundings. None of the aforementioned tactics has stopped any rapes.

Ector believes that politics by DPD is keeping them from suggesting that women start legally carrying firearms for protection against rape. He stated, "The police department doesn't want to undermine their gun buy-back program, in which citizens are being urged to turn in their firearms for an insulting low price. The premise of this scheme, which has never worked anywhere, is that guns are evil. For them - DPD - to suggest that women arm themselves would be 'shooting their argument' in the foot."

The East-Side Rapist: The White Elephant In The Room

The east-side of Detroit is currently gripped in a state of panic not seen here since the misogynistic reign of Glen Anthony during the summer of 2009.

Last week, Anthony, a prior prison parolee who was previously incarcerated 15 years for murder and drug dealing convictions, was sentenced to serve the rest of his life behind bars. His 2009 crime convictions included more than 30 offenses including multiple counts of kidnapping and rape, which spanned five separate cases.

Currently, there is another rapist running freely in the city who has wasted little time racking up gruesome rape statistics of his own. The Detroit Police Department (DPD) is attributing eight separate sexual assault attacks to a yet-to-be identified rapist. As of today, he has attacked eight different women since January 1rst.

In response to the attacks, DPD and the local Department of Transportation (DOT) have brokered an agreement whereby women can now wait for city buses inside of DPD precincts along the bus routes. DOT buses will make special stops to pick up these passengers. However, this arrangement offers little comfort, solace, or solutions for women at bus stops not near a DPD station.

Additionally, the "Detroit 300" has started nightly patrols in the east-side neighborhoods where the eight attacks occurred. They hope that their neighborhood canvassing with a composite sketch of the suspect will inform citizens that a rapist is on the prowl, will discourage young women from being on the streets after 9:00pm, and will ferret out a tip that will help DPD identify the rapist.

Moreover, DPD has issued some suggestions for women, who have a need to either be at bus stops or have a need to travel, during night-time hours. None of it is new and has been heard before this current round of rape attacks: don't wait or travel alone, be alert of your surroundings and strangers, and to travel to a police station if you are involved in an accident.

If the whole point of altering bus routes, establishing citizen patrols, and giving safety advice is to protect our women, why hasn't anyone publicly suggested an effective rape deterrent measure - a legally owned and carried firearm?

In the state of Michigan, it is lawful for a woman to use lethal force in self-defense when a predator is attempting to rape her.

One research paper by the Journal of Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine reports the following results of women who were selected for rape victimization by predators:

- Women who responded by begging were raped 96% of the time.
- Women who responded by screaming were raped 50% of the time.
- Women who responded by attempting to flee were raped 15% of the time.
- Women who responded by using knives or firearms were raped 1% of the time.

The white elephant in the room, while the city's residents discuss ways to stop the east-side rapist, is why aren't we talking about women using firearms to protect themselves? After all, the last Detroit serial rapist - Glen Anthony - was only caught because a match of his DNA turned up in a sex offender database.

We may not have that luxury this time around. The end result may be that many more women will be unnecessarily debased and defiled until the rapist becomes so reckless that he commits a mistake that identifies him or we - the citizens of Detroit - have a frank conversation about firearms and their role in personal protection.

Our solution could be as simple as a brave young lady wielding a 9mm handgun.

How The Arizona Mass Shooting Could Have Been Prevented

As our nation bravely attempts to recover from the shocking revelation of the mass shooting in Arizona, I am sickened and disgusted by news reports that an anti-gun organization - The Brady Campaign To End Gun Violence (TBCTEGV) - has already published and disseminated a fundraising letter to financially capitalize on what President Obama has called a 'national tragedy.'

In its press release issued yesterday, TBCTEGV did in fact manage to acknowledge the apparent troubling behavioral issues of the shooter involved in the Arizona assault - Jared Lee Loughner - but reached the wrong conclusion.

To begin, Loughner managed not to be accepted for enlistment into our nation's US Army, while our country is waging two wars - Afghanistan and Iraq. Our military needs men. If the military doesn't want a person, that is a huge emblazoned flag that something is amiss.

Further, Loughner was on the local Sheriff's radar for some time for apparent bizarre behavior that has not yet been disclosed during his enrollment at a local school, where his fellow students have characterized his behavior as bizarre. It was not rare for Loughner to frequently utter sudden nonsensical outbursts during his instructor's lecture.

However, the most damaging revelation about Loughner was his scrapes with the law that were apparently brushed over by the local judicial system in Arizona. On two separate occassions, Loughner's alleged bizarre conduct, which landed him into a courtroom, was glossed over and he was allowed to enter diversion programs, which would preserve his semblance on normalcy on paper.

It is at this point where "the system" failed Mr. Loughner, his 19 victims, the residents of Arizona, and our country. Had Loughner not been coddled and been properly evaluated especially with known information from local law enforcement, we may not have been subjected to the carnage that was unleashed a few days ago in a venue ironically named "Safeway." Maybe Loughner would have received needed psychiatriac treatment he apparently needs and/or would have been confined to a mental facility.

Predictably, TBCTEGV is true to their "mission of not letting a good tragedy go to waste," has issued a call for more gun laws. Their group is assigning the blame for the mass shooting to an inanimate object - a handgun - instead of the disturbed individual.

Never mind that there are already 20,000 gun laws already on the books that mentally disturbed people and hardened criminals already ignore. If we need a scapegoat, I'll offer up the judge and the local Sheriff for their failure to deal with Mr. Loughner before he shot 19 people, 6 of which have already died.

The irony of the mass shooting is that among all of the other people present at scene, none had a firearm. Arizona allows sane law-abiding citizens to open carry and conceal carry firearms without a license. Had just one person been armed, the outcome could have been different. Instead, the shooter was subdued by onlookers after he had emptied his handgun into his victims.

Handguns can save lives, especially those imperiled by hardened career criminals and the mentally depraved who all too often are not properly handled and addressed by our legal system. Creating more laws will only make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their families.

This shooting has a lesson for us all: an outburst of violence can occur anywhere. So, be armed, be ready, and be safe.

Detroit Michigan CCW Classes Instructor Calls For Answers About Sheriff's Escapee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, Michigan – Jan. 7, 2011 – Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer based in Detroit Michigan, is calling for answers about the conditions that allowed a convict to escape the custody of Wayne County Sheriff Deputies.

A couple of days ago, convicted rapist Willie B. Wright managed to over-power assigned deputies and effect an escape from a hospital during a scheduled medical appointment. According to Ector, the metro-Detroit region was unnecessarily subjected to the prospect of being harmed by an escapee with a known violent past.

Ector states, "This incident is unacceptable. There is no way that a person, who was convicted of a litany of violent offenses, should have been put into an environment in which he could escape and pose a serious and credible threat to our community."

Ector's call for an explanation was posted yesterday on his blog, "Legally Armed In Detroit," after he perceived that Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon is being reluctant to talk about the incident. Ector adds, "Our Sheriff owes us some answers and we want them now to ensure that there won't be other prisoners escaping the custody of law enforcement and endangering the safety of our community."

7 Questions For Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon

In the aftermath of the escape and recapture of Willie B. Wright - a convicted rapist - at Harper Hospital, there are some questions that general public would like to have answered.

Apparently, the person in charge - Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon - is not in the mood for talking much about the incident. Then it dawned on me that maybe he doesn't know what his constituents want to know.

So, I have compiled the following list of questions to aid our Sheriff in addressing our concerns. Hopefully, he's not counting on us to have short attention spans and to forget about this fiasco that was created by either the actions or inaction of his staff.

Here goes...

1. How exactly did a shackled prisoner over-power the deputies assigned to baby-sit him during a scheduled medical appointment?

2. Exactly how many deputies were assigned to supervise the shackled prisoner's medical visit?

3. Why was the shackled prisoner only pepper-sprayed instead of being shot?

4. Were the assigned deputies supervising the shackled prisoner's medical visit armed with handguns?

5. Did the prisoner ever leave the premises of the hospital and its associated underground walkways?

6. Who was responsible for clearing the premises to ensure that the escapee was not still on the premises of the hospital?

7. What immediate changes have been made to prevent this event from happening again.

Sheriff Napoleon, your constituents are patiently awaiting your response.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon Owes Us An Explanation About Escapee

The public safety scare, created by the brazen escape of a shackled convict under the custody of the Wayne County Sheriff Deputies, ended when convicted rapist Willie B. Wright reappeared at the hospital 30 hours later. His eventual arrest is being characterized as a capture when, in my humble opinion, he essentially "turned himself in."

From a picture posted in the media today, Wright was clearly disheveled and it was publicly reported that he was still wearing remnants of the prison garb he wore when he escaped. Clearly, he knew he was wanted by the authorities and that his size - a reported height of 6'5" and his weight of 300 pounds - made him an easily identifiable subject. He gave himself up for a warm shower, a hot meal, and a place to lay his head.

Mr. Wright's escape and the ensuing manhunt that followed has many area residents curious as to how this event was made possible. Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon was publicly "missing in action" throughout this incident and did not make a statement until Wright was back in custody. Napoleon was quoted in today's Free Press as making the following statement:

"We wanted to get this man back into custody before he could harm anyone else and that's exactly what happened."

The first thing that Napoleon now needs to tell his constituents, who voted him into office, is why he was so quiet during this fiasco. The public got its meager information from public statements made by Undersheriff Daniel Pfannes.

No disrespect to Pfannes, but the voting public did not vote for him in the recent election. The citizens of Wayne County wanted to hear from Napoleon. The public had a right to know how Wright was allowed to escape, what was being done to apprehend him, and what changes will be made to prevent future escapes.

That info needed to be made by the man in charge, on an on-going basis, to let the public know that he was on top of the problem. He needed to reassure the public that Wright was going to be apprehended. Statements of those ilk require confidence and leadership.

This region has not witnessed such political cowardice since the maelstrom created by the shooting of Aiyanna Jones. In that case, the Chief of Police was out of town and Mayor Bing was in hiding. We were given our info from the "then" Assistant DPD Chief Ralph Godbee.

It is easy to be in charge at a senior citizen dinner or when there are babies to be kissed on the campaign trail. Being in charge, in my opinion, is being engaged with your constituents when bad things happen. Sheriff Napoleon owes us answers on not only how a convicted rapist escaped his department's custody, but he also needs to explain why he was publicly absent.

We deserve better.

Detroit Michigan CCW Classes Instructor Issues A Call To Arms After Convict Escapes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, Michigan – Jan. 5, 2011 – Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer based in Detroit Michigan, is calling upon fellow law-abiding residents to arm themselves after a convict escapes.

As a consequence of a man, convicted of several violent offenses who escaped from Sheriff's deputies yesterday against incredible odds, Rick Ector is calling upon area residents to arm themselves. According to Ector, the escape of Willie B. Brown while being shackled during a hospital visit is a fiasco.

Ector further added, "It is not the job of the police to protect you. That is your job. Besides, law enforcement can't even protect you from shackled convicts who are being actively being supervised during a hospital visit. The strategy of law enforcement is to keep you dependent on them, however badly they do their job, and to buy your guns."

Wayne County Sheriff Department's Fiasco Proves Why Citizens Should Be Armed

Unless you live under a rock, you are aware of the fact that the Wayne County Sheriff's Department "lost" a prisoner at Harper Hospital yesterday at 12 noon. As I type this report, a full day - 24 hours - has passed and the escaped convict is still at-large.

The escapee - Willie B. Wright - is probably not your typical county jail resident of which the Sheriff's Department is responsible for warehousing and transporting everyday. Those tasks are the core function of that department. The Wayne County Sheriff's Department has the largest jail system in the state and manages an average daily population of about 2,600.

Wright was serving a "prison" sentence that could be as long as 60 years for committing several violent offenses: Rape, Assault w/Intent to Murder, and Felony Firearm. Presumably, if caught, his sentence will be lengthened due to his successful escape. His escape from a medical appointment raises several questions that the Sheriff's Department, headed by Benny Napoleon, has failed to address to the general public.

How exactly does a known violent convict, wearing shackles, and under guard by deputies escape? Make no mistake about it, Wright is a big guy; he is reported to be 6'5" in height and weighs as much as 300 pounds. That still does not explain how he managed to "struggle" with deputies and make an escape.

In layman's terms, it appears that Wright at least beat up and possibly disarmed his captors. The best reaction that Wayne County Deputies could muster was to administer pepper-spray. Exactly how many deputies were supervising him? Why wasn't the prisoner shot? Were the deputies disarmed of their firearms? Is the fear of litigation preventing our law enforcement officers from doing their jobs?

One thing is for sure - this kind of foolishness did not occur in Macomb County in a 2009 incident. In that case, a 32 year old inmate - Jamin William Totty - managed to slip out of his handcuffs during a medical appointment. Totty reportedly grabbed a syringe and threatened the safety of a Macomb County Deputy. Totty was shot and killed.

There is something terribly wrong with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department. A violent convict has escaped and presents a real danger to community. The public has not been told how exactly this fiasco happened. As far as we know, someone might escape today. What changes has Benny Napoleon made in light of his department's "epic fail?"

The best response, thus far, has been to alert the public of Wright's escape and to warn citizens that they may face charges if they help him evade recapture. Exactly how many of us are willing to help an escaped rapist and attempted murderer? The Sheriff's Dept. has lost its mind. In contrast, there has been no information published, as to how the residents can safeguard themselves against the menace posed by Wright.

Law enforcement will never tell you to own a firearm. Doing so, is an admission that they can't keep you safe, which isn't even their job anyway. That job is yours. Furthermore, as illustrated by this incident, law enforcement can't even protect you from shackled convicts who are being actively being supervised during a hospital visit. The strategy of law enforcement is to keep you dependent on them, however badly they do their job, and to buy your guns.

Don't drink the Kool-Aid. Even though this bad guy was roaming the streets, I didn't fret. I have firearms and I know how to use them to protect myself.

How about you?

Detroit Michigan CCW Classes Instructor Publishes 2011 Training Calendar

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Detroit, MI - January 2, 2011 -- Detroit Michigan CCW Classes Instructor publishes 2011 Firearm Safety Training Class Calendar.

Rick Ector, a National Rifle Associated (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer based in Detroit Michigan, has marked his fourth year of providing firearm safety classes to the public by publishing his 2011 training calendar online.

The posted class calendar documents the dates, during the 2011 calendar year, upon which interested law-abiding citizens can register for a state of Michigan complaint Concealed Pistol License (CCW/CPL) Training Class. A Michigan CPL allows a person to legally conceal carry a handgun "on or about" his person.

Ector annually publishes his entire class schedule for the year every January. According to Ector it is a good business practice, "By posting my entire class schedule on my web site and blog, I allow my customers to find the best training date that meets their hectic schedules: work, birthdays, weddings, school, church, and etc. I've had students who have both actually registered 7 months in advance and have completed course requirements, as scheduled."

Rick Ector is a NRA credentialed Firearms Trainer, who provides Michigan CCW Classes training in Detroit for students at his firearms school - Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit. Ector is a recognized expert in firearm safety and has been featured extensively in the national and local media: Associated Press, NRAnews, Gun Digest, The Politics Daily, Fox News Detroit, The Detroit News, WJLB, WGPR and the UrbanShooterPodcast.
