A Real Solution To Detroit's Violent Crime Problem

There has been a lot of hand-wringing lately by the law enforcement community about what needs to be done to quell the violent crime problem in the city of Detroit. Currently, the city of Detroit is on pace to break a 10 year-old record for the most homicides.

The Detroit Police Department (DPD) is trying just about every tactic they know to prevent the city from registering more homicides on the record books. Within the last month, they have announced plans to do the following: pull officers off desk jobs to conduct patrols, force officers to work 12 hour shifts, stop pretending to respond to non-human verified house alarms, and adopt a curfew for teens to be off the streets after dark.

Regrettably, these actions alone will not stop the violence. The perfect storm of variables that create crime are outside of DPD's control and remain unaddressed: Michigan Dept. of Corrections releasing violent criminals early, lenient judges treating criminals with kid gloves, dismal police response times, poor economic climate, illiteracy, poor educational system, and sour police and community relations.

The solutions to these underlying problems are beyond the scope of the law enforcement community. Further, they are complex and will ultimately require an economic investment that we currently can't afford. The city has been dangerously close to being forced into receivership for quite some time. That fact alone explains why we have an underfunded and understaffed police force and provides insight as to how the city has decided not to cut and maintain the landscaping on public property.

The solution to the current root causes of violent crime in Detroit will not happen in the near future. In the interim, there is a remedy available to protect the residents of Detroit but you won't hear the law enforcement community endorse it. The solution is for every person to become responsible for their own personal safety and the welfare of their families.

Currently, the city of Detroit is a predator's paradise. The police here consistently arrive to crime scenes well after the criminal has left. To add insult to injury - pun not intended - the police have an atrociously poor case closure percentage.

Thus, if a bad guy is not caught in the act of committing a crime, he will likely not be caught and will be free to do more mayhem in the community. Moreover, in the very few cases where the bad guys are actually apprehended it is likely that they will receive a lenient sentence and soon be back to their illicit trade of violent crime.

Every so often in the city of Detroit, you will hear of a story in the media whereby a person, who was legally armed, stopped a bad guy. Maybe you heard about the citizens who thwarted a robbery in an east-side barber shop. Or perhaps, you heard about two separate incidents whereby retired cops fought back against armed thugs at a post office or at the McDonald's restaurant in the University District.

The solution to our violent crime problem in Detroit is to make raping, robbing, and carjacking bad decisions that carry harsh consequences. At present, it is a no-brainer for thugs to wave a gun at an unarmed citizen to satisfy their selfish desires and whims. There is virtually no down-side even if they, by a random stroke of bad luck, manage to get apprehended later by the authorities.

Currently, there aren't enough firearms being carried by law abiding citizens to stem the incidence of violent crime. If the number of citizens in Detroit who legally carried arms was to double, the outcome would be predictable. We would witness the arrival of a tipping point whereby crime would plummet due to a criminal's fear of being shot or killed by his intended victim.

I am mindful that toting a pistol is not for everybody but for those that can handle the responsibility, the results would be well worth the effort. Further, even the most die-hard anti-gun critic would also be shielded from crime, as bad guys might assume that he was armed and leave him alone.

Carrying a firearm is not the answer to everything that ails Detroit. However, it is the answer to our current out of control violent crime problem. We must remove the certainty of success that now exists within the vocations of robbery, sexual assault, and carjacking. Until then, we will only witness more well-intentioned hand-wringing from our city leaders who are clueless as to how our citizens should be protected.

Don't set yourself up for victimhood. Be proactive. Protect your family. Buy a firearm, learn how to use it, and be safe.

The Novi Michigan Police Department's CCW Class Is Harmful To Your Freedom

At first blush, it may seem that the Novi Michigan Police Department's newly sponsored CCW Class may be a great idea. For starters, its mere creation at least means that the police in that community are candid enough with their residents to inform them that law enforcement officers can't be everywhere to combat crime.

Thus, by sponsoring a class in which their residents can be certified as applicants for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL), the Novi Police Department are open to the idea of law-abiding citizens exercising more involvement in their personal safety.

In contrast, it appears that other law enforcement agencies - such as the Detroit Police Department - view firearms as a cause of criminal behavior and do everything in their power to discourage its residents from becoming responsible firearms owners and legal gun carriers.

Despite the enlightened mindset of the Novi Police Department which is willing to train citizens how to be safe operators of firearms, I would strongly advise that citizens do not take them up on their offer to enroll in their sponsored class. In my professional opinion, doing so could be injurious and harmful to the enrolled students' freedom and Constitutional protections.

A police agency led CPL Class has a huge conflict of interest with respect to the students. Persons enrolled in a bona fide CPL Class are supposed to be taught how they should act in the aftermath of a self-defense incident. Accordingly, some time must be devoted to their actions when responding law enforcement officers arrive to the scene.

Police officers are trained professionals who have a job to do: collect evidence, interview witnesses, and arrest suspects. As such, any person who lawfully uses lethal force to protect himself from a predator will be criminally investigated. Attending officers can use trickery, subterfuge, and promises they are not capable of keeping to get a suspect to confess to a crime.

As such, the best tactic for a victim of a violent attack is to exercise his rights under the law to remain silent until he has had the benefit of legal representation. Lethal force is authorized for self-defense but there is a narrow band of circumstances for which it is a valid legal defense.

A person who has just undergone a significant event - such as a carjacking - is not in the best frame of mind to be making any official statements to the police. One mis-step by the victim could lead to him being imprisoned for a very long time because he lacked the ability to clearly articulate the legality of his actions at that time. Any revised statements later made with the advice of counsel would be discounted and ignored.

Therefore, it is fool-hardy for a person to learn how to protect their Constitutional rights during the aftermath of a violent encounter from a police officer. Police officers teaching a CPL Class could not trusted to inform their students not to cooperate with police before their attorneys arrived to the scene.

If citizens of Novi desire to seek out training to qualify for a Michigan CPL, they would be best served if they located and trained under a credible Firearms Instructor who did not have a hidden agenda: confessions obtained with the benefit of legal representation.

So, I applaud the Novi Police Department for suggesting that their residents assume more responsibility for their safety. However, I believe that cops have no business teaching CPL Classes. Doing so, can be harmful to the freedom and the rights of the students.

How To Get Rail-Roaded By The Legal System After Being Carjacked

The vast majority of us, who have valid Michigan issued Concealed Pistol Licenses (CPLs), jumped through all of the statutorily defined hoops so that we could have a means of defense against violent predators. However, it would myopic to assume and believe that merely surviving an unprovoked attack from a dangerous criminal is your only objective.

Winning the game of self-defense has two other equally important objectives - not being charged and convicted of a crime AND not being sued civilly for the wrongful death of a morally deficient scumbag (i.e. rapist, carjacker, home-invader, and etc.).

In Michigan, a citizen can not be sued for any injuries or fatalities incurred by bad guys during bona fide cases of self-defense. Thus, it is imperative that legally armed citizens avoid catching a criminal case. As a consequence, he is then automatically shielded or immunized from a civil suit.

One obvious key to avoid being charged with a crime is to both know and adhere to the laws of self-defense. The best way to do that is to take a "good" CPL Class. I won't get into a rant about the varying quality of courses in the marketplace today but rest assured that the content in a $65 class is not the same as that present in a $150 course.

Any graduate of a competently taught CPL Class knows how he is to act in the aftermath of a self-defense encounter - call your lawyer, call 9-1-1 to report a shooting, and SHUT UP until you have talked to your attorney. Any other course of action could have grave consequences to your lifestyle for many years into the future.

Imagine my shock, horror, and surprise when I awakened to news today that a recent victim of a carjacking attempt was being interviewed live on a local radio show. I don't fault the show's host and producer for trying to secure the guest's appearance; that is what they do. Talk radio is all about getting the hot commodity in the studio to secure high ratings. It's business - nothing personal.

I call into the question the judgement of the shooter in yesterday's carjacking incident. It was totally idiotic to discuss the case with the media before the case was cleared by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. I am certain that staff from Kym Worthy's Office were listening into the show and taking notes for any and all inaccuracies in the oral account being told live on the air.

It is very possible that some seemingly small detail could eventually lead to the shooter being charged with and being convicted a crime. If that happens, what was the original point of carrying a firearm and using it for self-defense? Going to prison for a few decades is not a good consolation prize for winning a shoot-out.

Along with the right to keep and bear a firearm are also the rights to remain silent and to not self-incriminate yourself. Why is it so easy to exercise the former and ignore the latter ones?

2011 L.A.I.D. Picnic Date Has Been Set - Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Detroit, MI -- August 09, 2011 -- Detroit gun rights activist expects over 100 armed attendees at Open Carry event at a local park.

Rick Ector, operator of a pro-gun rights web site, has organized a picnic to be held at a Detroit park whereby 100 visibly armed citizens are expected to be in attendance. In the state of Michigan it is legal for citizens to openly carry a handgun if they are 18 years of age, the handgun is registered to the carrier, the carrier is on foot, and in some circumstances the carrier is not in a designated pistol-free zone.

The purpose of the event, according to Ector, is to raise awareness that the practice of "Open Carry" is a lawful activity in Michigan. Ector adds, "Although we made some progress in our aim of educating the public from our last public event, there is still much work to be done." In April, Ector organized what many people believe was the first ever Open Carry dinner ever held within the city limits of Detroit; Close to 100 armed citizens attended that event.

The picnic, billed as Ector's organization's (Legally Armed In Detroit) "Second Annual OC Picnic," will be held at Belle Isle Park - Shelter #19 - on Sunday, August 28th, 2011, from 10am until 8pm.

Are Metro-Detroit Judges Compromising Public Safety?

Judges play an important role in public safety. One of their core duties is to mete out just and appropriate punishment for persons who have been convicted of violent and predatory crimes.

The public at-large counts on these elected and appointed officials to remove from society those folks who choose to victimize others to satisfy their own selfish ends and objectives. If there is no certainty of stiff punishment, criminals have no incentive to abolish their violent offenses against others.

A few days ago, I ran across three stories that were published in the local newspaper where I felt that the judges were too lenient:

On August 4th, the Detroit Free Press reported that a Detroit man was convicted of "sexually touching" a comatose 64 year old woman in her room at a local nursing home. The defendant, identified as Cornell Lowman, was charged with Fourth Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and Habitual Fourth Offender.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Carole Youngblood elected to ignore the Prosecutor's Office, which wanted to send this predator to prison. Instead Judge Youngblood reportedly only sentenced Lowman to a one year sentence in the county jail and three years of probation.

On August 3rd, the Detroit News reported that a 66 year old Saint Clair Shores man was recently sentenced in a child molestation case involving a 13 year old boy. The defendant, identified as George Gary Dombrosis, had previously pled guilty to four counts of Second Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and four counts of Possessing Child Pornography.

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Richard L. Caretti reportedly sentenced Dombrosis to a sentence of only one year in the county jail. The defendant in this case was so elated at his lenient sentence that he so profusely thanked the judge who responded by saying, "This isn't the Academy Awards."

On August 3rd, the Detroit News reported that a Warren man was recently sentenced for shooting a firearm in the direction of a cable TV installer on a pole who was disconnecting his subscription. The defendant, identified as Guy Tellis, had previously pled "No Contest" on an Assault With A Deadly Weapon charge in the same case.

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge James Biernat Jr. sentenced Guy to only a six month county jail term along with two years of probation of which he can't have a cable TV subscription.

The three aforementioned cases were reported in the media during a recent time period of only two days. If these cases are indicative of other sentences being doled out by local judges for violent and predatory offenses, we have a public safety menace that needs to be addressed - judges.

As citizens, we need to be acutely aware of how well our judges are protecting the public. They serve as the last line of defense between the violent offenders in our communities who manage to be apprehended and the general public.

If the judges who sit on out local court benches won't do their jobs, then we have a job to do - remove them from office. We must remember the soft sentences that they give out to predators at election time.

What do you think?
