Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer based in Detroit Michigan, will make his 15th appearance on the "Cam & Co. Show" tonight.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Detroit, MI – March 30, 2012 – Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer and gun rights activist based in Detroit Michigan, will be a featured guest tonight on the "Cam & Company Show." Personal Protection Tip: Always Keep An Eye On Entrances and Exits

Personal Protection Tip: One way to enhance personal safety when away from home is to pay attention to entrances of venues that you visit. For one, when entering a location, take a quick glance around and see if everything looks "normal" before committing yourself to actually being there. Many unsuspecting patrons of businesses have unwittingly walked into an establishment as it was being robbed.

Also, when you have made the active decision to patronize a location take a quick glance around to make note of any other exits just in case you may need to make a hasty retreat. Finally, when being seated make an effort to get a location whereby you can look up at the entrance and see if any suspicious characters show up.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Only Use Defensive Ammo (JHPs) In Your Handgun

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: If you legally carry a handgun for personal protection, it should only be loaded with defensive ammunition: Jacketed Hollow Points (JHPs).

JHPs are designed to stop in the initial target via the expansion of the bullet which dissipates the bulk of its energy as it makes contact. As a consequence, JHPs slow down and significantly reduces the possibility of "over-penetration" whereby unintended targets could be hit. Essentially, JHPs are a safety item.

Alternatively, if a person uses regular Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) ammunition in their defensive firearm, the shooter could open himself up to criminal prosecution for harming a bystander, a civil lawsuit for wrongful death, or both. Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Accumulate Cash To Retain Lawyer And To Post Bond

Concealed Pistol License Tip: If you are ever forced to defend yourself against a predator, you will probably be arrested pending the results of an investigation. Thus, you should make a concerted effort to save up enough money to retain an attorney and to post bond if it is available to you.

The exact dollar figure you will need to accumulate will depend on the circumstances of your pending case, the presiding judge, and the relationship you have with your attorney. Obviously, the more money you can stash away, the more successful you will be in your goal to get out of jail. Being free via bond will enable you to better assist your lawyer with your case and to remain employed at your job.

Personal Protection Tip: Only Vote For Candidates Who Support Community Safety

Personal Protection Tip: An often overlooked safety tip is to pay attention as to whom we place our trust to represent us. The people that we elect at all levels of government have a grave responsibility of both ensuring that our communities are safe AND not obstructing our ability to protect ourselves.

For example, do not vote for a candidate who will gut public safety while raising your taxes. Additionally, do not vote for a candidate who does not respect our God-given and Constitutionally recognized rights as citizens. Yes, we should not blindly vote for a candidate just because our Pastor told us to do so. Likewise, we should not vote for a person just because of his skin color.

Locally, the litmus test with respect to safety is the candidate's recognition of the need to properly staff EMS, the Fire Dept., and the Police Department. Furthermore, candidates should not be throwing up obstructions for your inherent right to defend your family and your home.

Pictured in this tip is Michigan State Senator Morris W. Hood III who cast the lone vote AGAINST MI SB 59 which would expand the places where CPL-holders can legally carry a concealed firearm.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Have A Pre-Existing Relationship With An Attorney

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: If you legally carry a firearm, you NEED to have a pre-existing relationship with a criminal defense attorney. If you are ever forced to defend yourself against a predator, the last thing you need to be worrying about is who is going to represent you and protect your rights.

Preferably, he will also have a CPL and have ample experience dealing with the County Gun Boards. I'll share a secret with you: My attorney is Terry Johnson. I have seen him in action and he has my trust. He gets my highest endorsement. Need a lawyer? Call my guy: 313.421.6193

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Don't Drink Alcohol While Carrying Concealed

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tips: As a CPL-holder, your blood alcohol content (BAC) must be less than 0.02 while you are carrying a concealed firearm. For most people, this limit will be reached with consumption of one beer, one glass of wine, or one shot of liquor.

Thus, do not legally carry a concealed firearm if you will be drinking. Either leave it at home, properly secure it in your vehicle, or give it to a friend who has a CPL and will not be drinking. Alcohol and firearms don't play nice together.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: A Presiding Religious Official Can Allow Concealed Carry In A House Of Worship

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Although a church or house of worship is a Pistol FREE Zone in Michigan, it is legal for CPL-holders to conceal carry pistols in them if they have permission from the presiding religious official.

I strongly suggest getting the authorization in writing. After all, if it became a necessity to lawfully use a firearm, you wouldn't want any confusion surrounding your authorization to carry there. Contrary to popular belief, the Devil goes to church too, as evidenced by a number of armed robberies of churches in Detroit within recent memory.

Moreover, I am going to make personal history this upcoming weekend - March 24th, 2012 - as I teach a Concealed Pistol License Class at the Fenkell Gospel Church in Detroit, with permission from the Pastor for me and my staff to have firearms on the premises. If you desire to RSVP for this specific class, contact Ken Kareem at 248.469.6248.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: During A Traffic Stop IMMEDIATELY Disclose You Have A CPL

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: If you are ever stopped while in a vehicle, either driving or as a passenger, you have a legal duty to IMMEDIATELY inform the officer that you have a CPL if you are armed. If not armed, it is still a good idea to make the declaration.

It is within the officer's discretion to take possession of your firearm for the duration of the stop. If the officer (DPD) wants it, go slow and over-communicate. It may also be a good idea to tell the cop you are talking to if he would let the other officers know that you are about to produce a firearm.

Personal Protection Tip: Enroll In A Red Cross First Responder Class

Personal Protection Tip: One excellent way to strengthen safety in our community and in our homes is to enroll in a low cost first responder class. The American Red Cross offers a variety of training to allow citizens to get certified to render aid and assistance to others.

Personally, my certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED are expiring soon. Thus, I will be renewing my certifications within the next month. Join me by getting trained by a local Red Cross Center in your neighborhood. After all, you may be the difference as to whether an injured person lives or dies.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Renew Your CPL Exactly 60 Days Before Expiration

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: You should apply for a CPL renewal exactly 60 days before the expiration of your current license. Your CPL expires on your birthday five years after the issuance of your first license. You will not be sent a renewal notice - I have my own thoughts on why they don't, but you have been warned.

In any case, some County Clerks Offices will have your renewed CPL in your possession within that 60 day period between the submission of your renewal application and the day that your current CPL expires. If you do not get your new license within that period, you will be eligible for an automatic 180 day extension of your prior CPL that starts exactly 60 days after you turn in your renewal application.

Pay attention: if you turn in your renewal application with less than 60 days before your current license expires, you will have a lapse in CPL coverage and can not legally carry a concealed pistol during that period. Also, when you turn in your CPL renewal application, you will be given a receipt that shows that you paid your $105 renewal fee. Make sure the Clerk's Office staples that receipt to your current CPL. You might get stopped during your extension and the cops in that city (I won't mention any names) might not know the law.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: How Much Stuff Are You Lugging Around Every Day (EDC)?

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: The Michigan Concealed Carry statutes are silent about the quantity of hidden firearms a licensee can carry at one time. Accordingly, it is not rare for many CPL-holders to carry more than one hidden firearm.

Obviously, having more than one handgun may allow a person to engage more than one target, have a backup if one fails, have access to more ammunition, and may eliminate a need to reload. One downside of carrying more than one pistol is that all of them may be taken into evidence if a person is ever forced to defend himself.

In any case, a CPL-holder should make an effort to evaluate his Every Day Carry (EDC) and determine how much stuff he is lugging around every day. Do you really need to be loaded down with all of that stuff? Reduce, simplify, and stay safe.

Personal Protection Tip: There Is Increased Safety In Numbers

Personal Protection Tip: In general, there is safety among large numbers of people. For example, the city of Detroit currently has a population of about 700,000 residents which shields many people from being victims of violence. Make no mistake about: violent crime in our town is unacceptably high and several heinous crimes are going to be done every day.

A specific individual's odds of being attacked is akin to winning the lottery - relatively low. However, if you have the misfortune of being selected for victimization, you run a very high risk of being robbed, raped, assaulted, home invaded, or murdered. Furthermore, you should strive to never travel alone in Detroit. In general, you are going to be safer if you have someone with you, especially when venturing out after dark.

However, be mindful that having potential witnesses and protectors with you is not a guarantee that you will not be attacked. For example, just two days ago one predator with one handgun carjacked four women in a vehicle (one escaped) and drove the remaining three to a deserted location and sexually assaulted them.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Avoid Accidental CCW Felonies

Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Tip: The other day a friend discovered that her son (a Concealed Pistol Licensee) had left his handgun in her car. If she had been stopped by the police, she could have been arrested and charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon (CCW) which is a five year felony.

Accordingly, if you live with someone or regularly share a vehicle with a person who has a CPL, you should get a CPL even if you have no desire to carry a firearm to avoid the possibility of an accidental felony.
