NTFSV: Name That Firearm Safety Violation - The Equalizer (2014)

In the following photo, which fundamental firearm safety rules, if any, are being violated?

How many firearm safety violations, if any, do you see in this still from the 2014 theatrical version of an old TV series: The Equalizer?

How Passing Along Stupid Videos In Social Media Can Classically Condition Minds Against Guns

A Conditioned Response is a form of learning that occurs when two separate events are paired together and are later viewed by the subject as indistinguishable. Ivan Pavlov is known as the first psychologist who demonstrated this concept.

In his experiment, he presented meat to a dog and noticed the reaction of the dog salivating. Later, he sounded a bell before before presenting the same dog with meat. Further still, he then subjected the dog to the sound of the bell without meat and noticed that the dog "connected" the bell to being presented with meat as evidenced by the dog's reaction.

It is for this reason, that I loathe seeing certain videos being posted in my timeline, especially the ones in which an obviously untrained person is attempting to operate a firearm. Obviously, these videos end badly for the subject with an injury of some sort being the eventual result. A person without the benefit of fundamental psychology might dismiss these videos as mere evidence of idiots with guns. Whereas that assessment may be true, something far more sinister is afoot.

For the record, an untrained person should not be operating firearms, for the sake of safety. However, when people see these videos, which often go "viral" in social media, they are being silently conditioned to learn that firearms are dangerous to anyone who may legitimately operate them with proper training.

As such, I will no longer tolerate the posting of these videos to my social media timelines and discourage people from "tagging" me in these posts. For one, I do not find them funny in the slightest bit and more importantly I do not want to "teach" people erroneous information about firearms. I hope you understand and will join me.

7 Open Carry Tips For Michigan Residents

7 Open Carry Tips For Michigan Residents

If you are ever so bold as to exercise your God-Given right to Open Carry a firearm, you may want to consider adopting as many of the following best practices in your routine:

- Get Open Carry training from a credible resource.

- Obtain a Concealed Pistol License.

- Open Carry in a group.

- Lawfully use a recording device.

- Retain the services of good lawyer well versed in Firearm Law.

- Have a few dollars set aside for legal expenses.

- Exercise your right to remain silent after you have been detained.

Whereas it is true that none of the aforementioned are required to lawfully open carry a firearm in Michigan, sometimes a variety of things can happen. As such, it is better to be prepared for issues and not have a negative experience than to have a negative experience and not be prepared for it.

Furthermore, I am not making any value judgements about an alleged incident that recently occurred in Detroit that is making waves in social media. I am merely sharing what I believe to be in an Open Carrier's best interests while exercising his rights.

Moreover, I don't favor any mode of carry over another. I fully support all forms of lawful carry. I could care less if it is open carry, concealed carry, handgun carry, or long gun carry. My only issue is that it be done in accordance with state and federal law.

Finally, not knowing the law is not a valid excuse for running afoul of it. If you do not know the laws on Open Carry thoroughly, then do not attempt it until you do. Firearm law infractions carry harsh penalties and consequences.

Firearm Safety Minute: All Firearms Are Always Loaded

Firearm Safety Minute: All Firearms Are Always Loaded

Whenever coming into possession of a firearm, it should always be treated as if it is loaded. If this mindset is adopted at all times then excuses that people offer in the aftermath of a negligent discharge would be eliminated. For the record, it is NEVER acceptable to say that you didn't know that the firearm was loaded. You ASSUME that it is loaded and handle it accordingly.

Moreover, you do not knowingly accept a loaded firearm from someone and you do not knowingly give a loaded firearm to someone. If you are giving someone a firearm, removed the ammunition source (e.g. magazine) and open the action to display the chamber while always keeping the firearm pointed in a safe direction.

Last Thoughts On The Wafer Case In Dearborn Heights

Last Thoughts On The Wafer Case In Dearborn Heights

Today, Theodore Wafer received a sentence of 15 - 30 years for shooting McBride on his porch as a result of his Second Degree Murder conviction. His defense case was an uphill battle from the start. He first stated that he did not know his shotgun was loaded and that it discharged accidentally. Later, he revised his position by stating that he shot in self-defense.

Although I advise persons to NEVER make statements to the police without an attorney present, he should have stuck to his original story and took a plea for Manslaughter. Of course, hindsight is 20/20 but his credibility took a huge hit when he changed his story. As a consequence, I seriously question the talent and expertise of his attorney.

For the record, firearms are ALWAYS loaded and you keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready for shoot. In addition, if you own a firearm for home defense and/or personal protection, it is IMPERATIVE that you know and fully understand that law on lethal force and self-defense. Not doing so, is an eventual and assured path to prison.

As we all should know now, if you believe someone is breaking into your house, wait until they actually breach your home before you shoot him. From legal, tactical, and political perspectives, the opening of your front door to shoot through a locked screen door is not a wise move.

As for his sentence, I believe that Wafer thought his home was actually being invaded. The big problem is that the evidence did not support that claim and the jury convicted him of Second Degree Murder. A conviction of two (Felony Firearm) PLUS 15 - 30 is huge pill to swallow BUT NOT knowing the law is NO EXCUSE.

If you own a firearm or are considering buying a firearm, please make sure that you know the law. If you don't know, contact me and I will get you enrolled in either a CPL Class or my next Lethal Force Seminar.

It is that important.
