Detroit Police Chief Discloses Dismal Violent Crime Case Closure Percentages at Bankruptcy Hearing

On October 25th, Detroit Chief of Police James Craig disclosed some startling violent crime statistics at a recent court proceeding. The aforementioned court appearance was the third day of sworn testimony in a federal bankruptcy proceeding to determine if the city of Detroit is eligible for bankruptcy protection from its creditors.

Chief Craig was invited to testify because of his position. As such, he claimed that citizens of the city are not getting the services they should because of the deplorable working conditions under which officers must cope while working.

Presumably, the poor working conditions might, at least partially, explain the department's difficulty in solving violent crimes in Detroit.

Craig disclosed that the department's homicide clearance percentage was at 11% and that the department's robbery clearance percentage was at 8%. Those numbers were described by the Chief as "deplorable" and "extremely low," respectively.

A clearance percentage is the percentage of applicable cases that have been investigated by the police department which resulted in a warrant request being sent to the County Prosecutor.

Accordingly, the Detroit Police Department is not doing a very good of solving crimes, As such, as a local Firearms Instructor working in Detroit, I strongly endorse that local citizens take on a more active role in their personal safety. In many cases, that is best done with a legally carried handgun.
