Loiterers have been associated with illegal activity: graffiti, panhandling, robbery, prostitution, and drug-dealing. Popular locations for loitering include, but is not limited to, gas stations, diners, pharmacies, strip malls, and convenience stores.

If you see loitering activity at a place of business you wish to patronize, pass it by and give another more suitable establishment your business.

Personal Protection Tip: Whenever feasibly possible avoid going to Pistol-FREE Zones (PFZs). PFZs are places where federal law, state law, or the private property owners have legally declared that all firearms are not allowed on the specified premises.

The reasoning behind this policy is based upon on the erroneous belief that everybody will comply. However, as time has repeatedly shown criminals and the mentally ill do not obey the law or follow rules. Thus, the only people carrying firearms in PFZs are bad actors.

As such, PFZs create a target rich environment for predators seeking to prey upon on unarmed law-abiding citizens. As a matter of public safety, stay out of PFZs whenever possible.

Michigan CCW Classes Instructor Organizes Local Starbucks Appreciation Day On Valentines Day

Detroit, MI – January 27, 2012 – Rick Ector, a Michigan Gun Rights Activist is organizing a local "Starbucks Appreciation Day" on Valentines Day in support of that corporation's published position on gun-owners patronizing their stores.

The Starbucks chain recently was targeted for a national boycott by an anti-gun group - National Gun Victim’s Action Council - for allowing local laws where their stores are located to determine whether gun owners can patronize its stores while armed. The boycott is scheduled to start on February 14th.

Personal Protection Tip: If you are visiting from another country, state, or neighborhood you can enhance your personal safety by not looking or acting like you have never been there. You may not be able to hide the fact that you have a non-Michigan license plate on your vehicle but you can do other things to avoid drawing attention to your yourself.

For one, dress appropriately for the venue and the event, don't walk around with a video recorder or camera on your neck, or pull out a map. Further, walk with a gait like you know where you are going and don't stare up at buildings and landmarks like you are "brand new." Moreover, do your homework and avoid having to ask strangers for directions. Engage in very little small-talk as we don't have much "Southern hospitality" here and don't tell strangers where you're from and where you are going.

Personal Protection Tip: When on the road and stopped at a traffic signal or stop sign, always leave yourself "an out" just in case you need to quickly leave the scene. For example, leave at least enough room between your car and the car in front of you so that you can see the other car's full rear tires.

In addition, when parking your vehicle in a lot make sure it is positioned so that upon your later exit you can quickly pull out with full visibility and not need to slowly back out of a parking space with impaired vision of approaching obstacles. Responsible Firearm Owners Don't Ring In The New Year With Gunfire

Detroit has "unique" traditions. One such tradition is the burning of cars (i.e. car-be-cues) and abandoned buildings on Angel's Night (AKA Devil's Night). However, recent governmental administrations have called upon the community to conduct citizen's patrols to help the police and fire department monitor the city. Recent efforts have been successful to keep the number of arsons down during this period.

However, another Detroit tradition continues unabated. Many people in this town will feel the need to shoot their firearms at midnight. In fact, some idiots can't wait and will start shooting at early as 11:00 p.m. tonight.

A casual observer to our town may think it is a celebratory gesture. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truly astute people here know that people engage in this reckless behavior for essentially one purpose: to let other folks in the hood know that this house has guns and that its residents are not afraid to use them.

Shooting a firearm while it is aimed at the sky is reckless. Simple physics dictates that what goes up (i.e. the bullet) must come down. The perpetrator of this self-less act is often deluded that his act is harmless. A bullet falling from the sky is traveling at 700 feet/second when it comes to rest. This velocity is more than enough to penetrate the skull of an adult.

Sometime during the night tonight and a throughout a period in the wee hours of the next morning, it will be literally be raining bullets in the city of Detroit. As a consequence of the hail of lead falling from the sky, many Detroiters are forced to bring in the New Year in their basements. Apartment dwellers will be forced to take their chances by only being able to lie on the floor of their units. You know how the saying goes, "bullets don't have any names on them."

Thus, I ask you - my fellow Detroiters - to end this practice of shooting guns in the sky at the dawn of a new year. This irresponsible act could needlessly end someone's life. If you don't own a gun, but know someone who does and has plans to shoot it in the sky take a moment to talk him out of it.

I appreciate feedback but if you want to debate the physics of falling projectiles (i.e. bullets), you have missed my point entirely. Write your own essay.

L.A.I.D. Story of the Week:

Today, at 2:30a.m. a jacker got much more than he bargained for when he attempted a robbery at "Legends" a Coney Island style restaurant on the city's west side of town. His victim, an armed security guard, also had a Michigan Concealed Pistol License and a gun.

Both were injured in the exchange - the guard was hit in his legs but returned fire and shot the bad guy three times in the stomach. Both are reportedly expected to recover.

I'll be following this story for more developments and added info such as what caliber handgun the security guard was carrying.

Seven Ugly Realities Of Being A Victim Of A Violent Crime

Unless you have had the misfortune of being the victim of a violent crime, you don't have a clue as to what it is like. I have the unique distinction of not only surviving an armed robbery at my home but also the experience of discussing the realities of being attacked with other victims in my role as a credentialed Firearms Instructor.

There are seven ugly realities of violent crime that you should know, especially if you haven't yet assumed an active role in your personal protection.

1. You probably Won't See The Attack Coming Before It Happens

Violent crime is an activity that carries an element of risk for the offender. As such, it is in his best interests and safety to wisely select his victims. Predators on the prowl are actively looking for persons who are not paying attention to their environment.

A distracted victim presents a great opportunity for the criminal to quickly approach while remaining undetected until the attack can start. It is not uncommon for victims to state the criminal appeared "out of nowhere." In truth, he was there the entire time waiting until the perfect time to strike.

2. You Can't Rely On A Good Samaritan To Come To Your Aid

It is not uncommon for violent crimes to be boldly committed in front of potential witnesses, even in broad daylight. Thus, it would be fool-hardy for a person to believe that he is immune from a violent criminal attack just because he is around a group of strangers who "could" intervene and assist him during his attack.

The state of Michigan does not have a "Good Samaritan" law on the books. It is perfectly legal for strangers to watch you get robbed, killed, raped, or carjacked without helping you.

In a story reported nationally a few years ago, a 93 year-old WWII veteran was violently assaulted in Detroit by a carjacker in broad daylight in front of several witnesses. The victim was violently struck 23 times to his head while his body was propped-up between two cars. Onlookers watched in horror while doing nothing to help.

3. Begging To Not Be Victimized Will Probably Not Work

A predator is unlikely to be deterred by any pleas from his victim. By the time the attack has started, the predator is already "amped up" for a conflict and unless he is forced to stop he will not do so until he has accomplished his objective. In fact, the strategy of merely pleading with the assailant may have the unintended consequence of making the situation worse. Attempting to reason with a predator is a form of resistance which may further agitate him and make his actions even more brutal.

4. Complying With The Demands Of The Attacker Does Not Guarantee Anything

There is no covenant or implied promise that if you do everything that a predator demands of you that he will not physically harm you. Despite the mantra of "Just do what they say" by pacifists, there are numerous documented incidents in which a victim quickly and quietly complied with an attacker and was still shot, killed, or both.

For example, earlier this year a Detroit man was targeted for a robbery of his groceries as he returned home from shopping. The victim quickly surrendered his three bags of food to his assailant but was still shot in his leg, as if was as a reflexive afterthought.

5. No One Will Care About Your Victimization As Much As You

After having survived a harrowing experience, it is not uncommon for many victims to feel dismissed. Understandably, some victims want to vent and to discuss their attack with other people who either accuse them of over-reacting or who insinuate that they had some level of culpability in the attack. After all, as the critics say, "It's not like you were killed or something. You need to move."

Some victims feel victimized all over again when trying to report the incident to the authorities. In one recent incident, a North Rosedale Park resident claimed in a published report that he allegedly had to threaten a 9-1-1 Operator with calling the Detroit Police Chief because he felt that his robbery merited a faster response. In a town like Detroit, a robbery without a murdered victim takes a back to more pressing issues.

6. A Continual Period Of Hyper-Awareness Can Be Unsettling

In the aftermath of a violent encounter, it is common for many victims to be in a consistent state of hyper-awareness where their senses are unusually heightened. It seems as though the slightest sound made or the smallest item just outside of their peripheral vision uncontrollably gains their full attention. This condition will eventually subside over time but until it does there will be a lot of distraction.

7. A Violent Attack Can Cause Victims To Question Their Vulnerability

For many crime victims, the aftermath of a violent crime can be an emotionally unsettling time. It is often a rude awakening for such persons to abruptly discover that they were both vulnerable to a violent attack and were blissfully unaware of the possibility. Violent crime always happens to someone else - until now.

A decision must now be made. Victims must now decide if they are going flee their current environment, do nothing differently, or assume a greater role in their safety. Merely moving from one community to another will not change anything except your address. A victim is not defined by his zip code.

Alternatively, making no changes at all merely guarantees that if a victim is around a predator who has motive, opportunity, and ability that he will be victimized again. The issue is not if he will be attacked again - but when.

Assuming a more active role in your personal protection is not difficult. However, it will require commitment, time, and resources. Peace of mind is priceless and is worth whatever it costs to make it happen.

If you are ready to draw a line in the sand and keep violent crime from your home, then you need to make the next step. That singular step is to enroll in a state of Michigan compliant Concealed Pistol License class.

The last class of the year will be held this Sunday, December 11th.

Detroit, MI - Dec 3, 2011 - Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) endorsed CCW Class/Personal Protection Trainer based in Detroit Michigan, has launched a site on Facebook that calls for a boycott of Family Dollar stores.

Ector launched the boycott page on Facebook in response to a published report that a Family Dollar worker was allegedly fired as a result of his actions during a hold-up. According to the news story, the worker allegedly gave an armed robber too much money.

Within one day of its launch, the Boycott Family Dollar page on Facebook has quickly garnered almost 100 members. The page asks that all persons who join the page to pledge that they will not shop at the chain of discount stores until two things occur: the fired worker is given back his job and that the Family Dollar store chain implement a policy to protect its workers while on duty.

Ector, the page's creator, called for the boycott because the worker's firing was a typical case of employers wanting to "have their cake and eat it too" on the subject of workplace safety.

Ector adds, "Most employers strictly forbid their employees to fight back against crimes such as robberies on the job because of potential liability concerns. This story was particularly disturbing because the employee fully complied with the demands of the robber who leveled a firearm at him. For the offense of giving away too much money with his life hanging in the balance, he was fired. This outcome is unacceptable."

Ector, a former robbery victim, also believes and advocates that employees who have been issued Concealed Pistol Licenses (i.e. CPLs) should be allowed to carry firearms at work. Furthermore, he feels that if employers take away self-defense rights from its workers then the employers must provide reasonable security to protect workers or face legal liability sanctions for injuries and deaths.

Detroit's Dangerous Depredations Deepen

It has been an especially violent time over the past couple of weeks in Detroit. Just when you think that you can exhale from hearing about the latest heinous offense, there's another one looming just around the oncoming bend.

I've lived in this city my entire life, so it comes as no surprise that our town is a rough and dangerous place to live, work, or visit. From first-hand experience, I know all too well how easy it is to become numb and apathetic to violence. We hear of it all the time and it becomes the norm. So, the media outlets have adjusted. We now only hear about the crimes that can scare or anger us.

If someone merely got robbed or raped, it's no big deal and may not be reported in the newspapers or on the news telecast. These crimes are too common. They happen all the time.

Need proof? Check out the Detroit Police Department's YTD violent crime statistics. If you listen to their rhetoric, they'll tell you that they are doing a good job because, with the exception of homicides and shootings going through the roof, other violent crimes are down 10 percent.

I prefer to look at Detroit crime stats up close. I care not how much crime is down when the sheer volume is still way too high. Did you know that every day, on average, three women in Detroit are raped? Probably not. You only hear about a rapist on the prowl in the media when the police think they have a serial offender operating.

If the police can catch him there's a good chance several cases can be closed which may help improve the nation's worse police case closure rate. So, when a sensational rape case emerges expect to see news broadcasts of citizens passing out flyers with a generic picture of a "person of interest" that will look nothing like the actual rapist when he is eventually identified from DNA evidence in the state's offender database.

In the meanwhile, the media can run several highly watched stories about fed-up citizens trying to help the police catch a bad guy. The police get positive press coverage and get to extol the virtues of good working relationships with the community while they decide which services to no longer provide to the same community - like no response to house alarms.

Well, what are they doing about the other rapists? Who knows? The media don't have enough space to highlight them all and in all honesty probably can't generate enough ratings from a simple rape case. The rapes they want to publicize involve senior citizen and children victims. Those rapes get our attention and de-numb the senses of the citizenry. Those cases also get ratings.

Furthermore, on average, in the city of Detroit one person is murdered, 53 burglaries are effected, and 93 citizens are assaulted every single day. You probably didn't know that because all of those stories were not covered and talked about in the media.

From just memory alone, here are some actual crimes that happened recently and were reported in the media:

- A two year old child was taken along with a vehicle that was carjacked
- A 26 year-old mother of six has vanished
- A woman looking for her missing daughter finds body in a vacant house
- A 80 year-old woman body was found abandoned in car-B-cue
- A home invasion where three people were shot (2 fatalities)
- A man robbed at gun point in broad daylight while raking leaves
- A man shot and killed a home invader during daylight hours

There are many other tales of violent crime that happened that you will never know about. I hear about a few non-covered crimes because I get phone calls from surviving victims who want to assume control and responsibility for their safety. In their hour of need, there wasn't a cop in sight.

Other folks talk about leaving the city. Considering the fact that half of the police and fire department staff left long ago, who can blame them? The city tried bribing public employees to move back into the city and with the exception of just one person they all told the city, "Thanks, but no thanks."

Fleeing to the suburbs is not a real solution. The dirty little secret is that violent crime occurs there too with regular familiarity. The suburbs, you see, do a better job of keeping their crimes out of the papers.

The real way to deal with staying safe during perilous times is to assume total responsibility for your safety. Failing to do so will only change a victim's address of record. You can robbed, raped, and murdered anywhere.

Perhaps the most sobering fact of the violent crime problem we have in the metro-Detroit region is that things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. Black Friday has come and gone and has ushered in the holiday robbing season. Toss in daylight savings time changes whereby it gets dark earlier and the fact that the state of Michigan is tossing 40,000 folks of its cash assistance program it is a no-brainer that crime is about to seriously spike.

If those aforementioned factors aren't serious enough, the city of Detroit may have to layoff up to 2,300 employees. Talk from downtown has suggested that up to 500 cops may be laid off the department staff rolls. In short, it is going to be an even better time to be a violent criminal in the city of Detroit.

In essence, crime is out of control now. It is going to get much worse with no end in sight. The issue citizens have is how they are going to respond to the environment as it is. Some will run. They will merely run and be victimized by suburban predators. Some citizens will do nothing and merely hope for the best. That is their right. Being a victim is a choice.

Some will refuse to be a victim. They will choose to acquire the skill, knowledge, and mindset to protect themselves and their families. It will require the adoption of several changes and a financial investment: training and tools. Peace of mind is priceless and is worth whatever it costs to make it happen.

The most terrifying crime imaginable in the city of Detroit is a daytime home invasion. A home invasion, as defined by Michigan law (MCL 750.110a), occurs when a person or a group of persons enter a home without permission with the intent to commit other crimes.

The severity or degree of a home invasion is dependent on a variety of factors: whether the invaders were armed, whether the invaders had a firearm, whether the residence was occupied, or whether any additional crimes committed were felonies.

Home invasions, by their very definition alone, presume that there will be additional crimes committed by the invaders once they gain entry to the residence. Those crimes include, but are not limited to, the following: murder, sexual assault (rape), robbery, assault, burglary, and kidnapping.

A home invasion is a bold crime. The invaders are willing to risk their freedom, their health, and even their very lives by brazenly coming into someone's home without knowing if anyone is present.

Furthermore, the invaders are so confident in their abilities - that if someone happens to be in the home - that they are willing to wager that they can quickly neutralize any resistance from the intended victims. Thusly, if a home is invaded the bad guys are geared up for a confrontation and will quickly use violence to achieve their objective.

Michigan law presumes, with a few exceptions, that a person who either is in the process of breaking into a home or has already broken into a home is a threat of great bodily harm, sexual assault or death. Accordingly, lethal force under the aforementioned circumstances can be legally used to quell the home invasion.

Most people, when thinking about the specter and possibility of their homes being invaded, assume that the offense will be attempted under the cover of darkness - at night. Nothing could possibly be further than the truth. Having this delusion, especially in Detroit, could cause invaded residents to become complacent and to not be ready.

Within the past week, there have been a couple of home invasions that happened in the city of Detroit during the daytime hours. An invasion during the day is particularly alarming because it demonstrates that violent predators have no qualms about being seen by witnesses outside of the residence being attacked.

For example, the media reported today that three people were shot - two fatalities - in a home on the east-side of Detroit which had the "front door kicked in" around 9:00 am. Few details, at this time, have not been made public other than the crime occurred on the 20500 block of Schoenherr Road - reputed to be in the most crime-ridden part of town.

In addition, during the afternoon of Friday, November 25th at 2:30pm a retired Detroit police officer discovered an 19 year-old alleged home invader in his kitchen. The alleged invader was promptly shot and died. This incident occurred on the city's west-side side of town in the 9900 block of Coyle Street.

Successfully defending a residence against a home invasion requires that the owner be prepared for an attack - at all hours of the day. If an invasion rears its head, a successful defense will require fast access to a loaded firearm and the willingness to use it in self-defense.

Additionally, the home defender needs to both know how to safely operate a firearm without injuring himself and self-defense laws in the state of Michigan. One way to acquire this knowledge is by enrolling into and completing a bona fide state of Michigan compliant Concealed Pistol License (CPL/CCW) class.

Did DPD Northeast District Police Officers Turn Their Backs On The Citizens of Detroit?

Last night it was reported that a "handful" of sworn Detroit police officers from the Northeast District ended their shifts significantly shorter than their scheduled shift. Anywhere from 16 to 21 of that District's available 26 officers on duty allegedly went home with a case of the "Blue Flu."

Since police officers in this state can't legally strike, it has been widely rumored that they all merely claimed to be sick and were consequently released to go home to recover. Obviously the odds that all of these officers suddenly and simultaneously become so ill that they couldn't work are remote, at best. Accordingly, DPD's Police Chief announced today that the incident would be investigated by their own Internal Affairs Department.

The apparently coordinated timing and the centralization of the officers' inability to work their schedule has led many people to suspect that this incident was an illegal "wild-cat strike" done in retaliation for rumored layoffs and pay cuts that may affect the police department.

This past Wednesday, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announced during a live televised speech that the city was in dire straights financially and that significant action would be required to fix our budget. If we failed to quickly fix our finances, the mayor told us (i.e. the residents) that the city could run out of cash by April of 2012.

Among the solutions Mayor Bing announced would be the following: 10% wage cuts across the board, increased health care contributions by city employees, increased taxes for corporations, and reduced payouts to city retirees.

Further, another consequence of our city not being financially solvent would be the installation of an Emergency Financial Manager (EFM) by the state of Michigan to make the necessary changes to fix the city's finances. An EFM would have sweeping power and authority: contracts could be broken, assets could be sold, taxes could be raised, and public employees could be laid off from the city's manpower rolls.

Mayor Bing also made sure to emphatically make two crucial points during the speech: He did not want an EFM assigned to Detroit and he would not "gutt police and fire." Both points drew significant applause from the attending crowd.

On this past Friday Mayor Bing responded publicly to critics of his speech from Wednesday, who said publicly that his previously announced plan was not acceptable to solve Detroit's financial problems. Accordingly, Bing announced layoffs for 1,000 city employees.

In contrast, his critics had suggested that as many as 2,300 layoffs would be needed due to an anticipated reluctance from city labor unions to break their contract and accept any concessions. With manpower from the police department and the fire department reportedly consuming almost 60% of the city's payroll, it seems difficult to believe that those aforementioned departments would not be impacted.

In the immediate aftermath of this alleged "sick-out," the Northeast District's territory - the most dangerous in the city - was left uncovered by police until adjustments could be made from other available units. Until we are officially told by DPD Brass, we won't know officially how long the period lasted.

If DPD's Internal Affairs investigation confirms that the sworn officers left their posts to make a cheap political point to the city's leadership, they should be dealt with swiftly and harshly.

Firing officers who went on a "wild cat strike" would be appropriate for no other reason than to send a clear message to other police officers who may be disgruntled. It is incredulous to believe that the public trust would be compromised by mere rumored pay cuts or layoffs - regardless if they ever materialize.

Despite the fact that the city of Detroit has a historic tradition of being a union stronghold, participants in a wild-cat strike - past or future - would be sorely mistaken if they thought that residents would sympathize with their actions. Residents of the city of Detroit - union members or not - will not support this action for no other reason than in the our city on average there are one murder, three rapes, 53 burglaries, and 97 assaults every day.

Hopefully, last night's incident will have a positive unintended consequence. Perhaps, residents who have not yet assumed responsibility for their safety will have been awakened from the false sense of security that the police department works so desperately to perpetuate.

DPD tells us that violent crime is down 10% relative to last year without acknowledging that it is still way too high, especially for a city that has lost a significant amount of its population over the past couple of decades. Of course, we have to conveniently overlook the fact that we are on pace to break a 10 year-old homicide record.

Another lie they tell the residents is that if they sell their firearms "back to" the police, the streets will be cleaned up and that the city will be safer. DPD has yet to prove that bold claim. Extra-ordinary claims require extra-ordinary evidence. We haven't seen it yet.

Folks still on the fence might finally assume responsibility for their safety and their families - move out or buy a firearm. Residents might also get the idea that many police officers, who have long ago moved from within our municipal borders, are only working for a paycheck and have no vested interest in what happens here. How else do you explain what "allegedly" happened last night?

Last night, a "handful" of sworn police officers turned their backs to us and paid us an undeserved slight. Now that you understand, what are you going to do about it?

Doing nothing is not an option. We now know that if we call, they might be at home sick.

Last Media Appearance: Fox News Detroit's "The Edge" - November 17th, 2011

Yesterday I was featured in a news item for a local TV talk show here in Detroit: "The Edge" (Fox News Channel 2). I was interviewed by Reporter Andrea Isom. The topic of the segment was a discussion about whether the uncertainty surrounding the difficulties of Detroit's financial health are creating a demand for state of Michigan Concealed Pistol Licenses (CPL).

The city of Detroit is on the brink of financial insolvency and Mayor Bing had recently stated in a televised news conference that he would "not gutt police and fire." Personally, I don't think many city residents completely believe him; Our phones have been ringing regularly with anxious residents inquiring about how to get CPLs.

Prepare For The Fall of Detroit - Mayor Bing Has Failed Us

As a life-long resident of Detroit, I tuned into Mayor Bing's televised address to the city yesterday. We now officially know what many of us have suspected for years - the city of Detroit is on the brink of financial ruin; the results of a financial study conducted by a respected consulting firm confirmed that Detroit will indeed run out of cash by spring of 2012.

Drastic measures will need to be undertaken in a very short window of opportunity to prevent what many feel is inevitable - the appointment of an Emergency Financial Manager (EFM). Once appointed, the EFM will have the authority to make sweeping changes: layoff employees, invalidate contracts, sell off city owned assets, and more. Mayor Bing stated for the record that wished to avoid the appointment of an EFM to fix our city's finances. His proposed plan, or shall I say wishful thinking, says otherwise.

Mayor Bing in his address last night failed to deliver a credible plan to fix Detroit - once and for all. The short-term fixes he asked for fall far short of what we need - a thorough house cleaning and fumigation of the cesspool we call city government. For far too long we, as residents, have watched our local representatives use their positions for personal gain to the detriment of the residents.

Bing's plan - revealed last night - called for significant concessions from the labor unions, a 10 percent pay cut for all city employees, and a 1 percent tax hike for corporations who do business here, increases in benefits contributions from employees, and less benefits to be paid to retirees.

If he manages to do all of the aforementioned, the city reportedly would break even. Bing's plan fails to address what we do next. In my humble opinion, he lacks political courage to undertake bold moves to solve our long-term issue of financial solvency. I am not alone in my assessment of Bing's plan. Many feel that much more needs to be done. I have read that at least one City Councilman suggested that as many as 2,300 city employees should be laid off immediately. Yes, our city finances are that bad.

Bing also pledged not "to gutt police and fire" and not to give criminals free reign to do whatever they wish to do in Detroit. For one, I don't know how a city can shed over 2,000 workers and not further compromise public safety by not trimming those areas of the budget that account for a reported 60 percent of the payroll. It doesn't seem possible.

Next, Bing is probably unaware of how bad crime is in Detroit these days. Yes, it is true that other than homicides our violent crime is down 10 percent relative to last year. That fact does not mean in any shape or form that crime in under control.

On average, the following violent crimes occur within the city limits of our city: 1 murder, 3 rapes, 53 burglaries, and 97 assaults. Crime at this level is unacceptable - regardless of how much it has dropped since the prior year.

Despite the promises, there will be significant cuts in the Detroit Police Department. As such, among the many things that residents must concede is that it will be incumbent on the residents of our city to accept more responsibility for their safety. For some that will mean moving out to a safer city and for others it will translate into exploring personal protection options other than dialing 9-1-1.

In conclusion, I have zero confidence in Mayor Bing's leadership to get us past this financial crisis. His announced plan is a long-shot short-term solution. I predict that sooner or later the state of Michigan will assign an EFM to straighten out our city's finances.

The cynic in me thinks that Governor Snyder will merely replace Bing's inefficient cronies with cronies of his own. The difference is that Snyder's guys will actually make the tough decisions that our failed elected leadership lacks the political courage to do the job we trusted them to do.

In the interim, the city of Detroit will become an even more dangerous place to live, to work, and to visit. We are officially on the brink of disaster.

Woeful Detroit Police Dept. Statistics Have A New Scapegoat: Unreported Gun Shots

Another quarter has closed in this current calendar year. As such, the Detroit Police Department (DPD) reported its latest crime statistics as required by the current City Charter. Relative to the last quarterly report, nothing much has changed in the level of violent crime reported here except the scapegoat.

Last quarter, the theme of the meeting was that violent crime trended downwards all across the board, except for shootings and homicides. Most of the blame for the spike in homicide statistics was attributed at that time to risky behaviors of the victims.

Apparently, DPD credited the spike in homicides after analyzing its numbers to an appreciable number of murdered folks in the city who had felony convictions. For good measure they tossed in some anecdotal commentary about "retaliation-related" shootings and floated a justification that they felt would be accepted by the residents.

Furthermore, DPD also blamed false home alarms as another reason why they couldn't get a handle on our violent crime problem. They told the community that 97 percent of all home alarm runs were false and caused a drain on their resources.

I'm not so naive to believe that DPD sent officers in a timely fashion to an estimated 60,000 house alarm calls last year, but if they claim that ending their practice of responding to unverified calls will cause a drop in our crime statistics numbers I'd support them.

In response to the Second Quarter Statistic Report, DPD assured residents that they had a number of initiatives underway to fight violent crime in the city of Detroit. Among the tasks they announced either at the Second Quarter Crime Meeting or in the time since that meeting were the following:

Deploying officers from desk duty to street patrols
Requiring patrol officers to work longer shifts
Ending responses to unverified house alarms
Publicizing anonymous crime reporting hotline

Last night's Third Quarter Crime Townhall revealed the following statistics about violent crime in Detroit:

As of Sunday, 301 homicides were recorded this year versus 252 last year. Nothing done thus far has slowed down our murder rate - not even two gun buy-backs cosponsored by DPD in the past year or so.

As of October 30th,

845 rapes were recorded this year (901 last year)
26,557 assaults were recorded this year (23,787 last year)
14,457 burglaries were recorded this year (16,204 last year)

The statistics prove that our crime numbers - except homicides - are "better" than last year's data. However, the current numbers are definitely not something to crow and brag about to the community.

According to the aforementioned numbers compiled for 273 days of this year, every single day within the boundaries of Detroit there will be 1 murder, 3 rapes, 53 burglaries, and 97 assaults.

Violent crime is still present here at an unacceptable level. In fact, a month ago Forbes Magazine crunched national crime statistics and crowned us as the "Most Violent City In America."

Against the backdrop of our woeful crime statistics, DPD is lobbying hard for the Detroit City Council to approve $2.6 million for a gunshot detection system. They say it will give them almost real-time reporting of gunfire within the monitored area. It appears that DPD feels that if it could just get all reports of shootings, they could solve our homicide problem.

I hate to be the one to douse their hopes but exactly how will getting all of the data translate into faster response times? I argue that the reason that DPD doesn't currently get all of the gunshot data - via calls from citizens - is their poor response time. Why call if they aren't going to come?

Furthermore, if getting all of the data about gunfire was important, why don't we have enough 9-1-1 operators working to keep citizens from getting busy signals when they call for assistance? Why not spend the money on restoring cuts to the phone system? Why not hire more police officers?

As you can see, I think that this proposed system is just another case of "let's just do something to show the citizens that we are trying to solve the problem." It's the same mindset in play when another gun buy-back is conducted. Off the shelf solutions such as this proposed system doesn't address the underlying issue - a lack of adequate number of police officers to enforce the law in this town.

I predict that if this solution is deployed and that if this solution works as advertised, no positive result will be achieved other than a few press releases will be issued that will cause the media to appear and write an upbeat story about how the new system makes DPD a 21rst century crime-fighting organization. The real issue, if public safety is truly the goal, is what can we do with the money that will make a measurable difference?

In stark contrast to DPD's approach to solving violent crime, last week a South Carolina Spartanburg County Sheriff told citizens there to buy handguns in response to a sexual assault that recently occurred in his community.

Wouldn't it be great if the political leadership in Detroit had the guts to take a similar position? I think so, but don't hold your breath. The very last thing they want is for citizens to take an active role in their own personal protection. Their silence is especially curious when you consider the fact that a clear majority of Detroit's City Council has concealed pistol licenses.

It is politically safer for the city's leadership to find a convenient scapegoat every quarter to explain why the murders don't stop. If it's not "alternative lifestyle decisions" and false house alarms last quarter, then the excuse morphs into a lack of gunshot reporting data this quarter.

I tell you one thing though, our local leaders continue amaze me with the creative and new reasons they give for the way things are in Detroit. If you desire to be safe in Detroit, you'd be wise to buy a handgun and to get a concealed carry permit - just like city council.

Pay no mind to what politicians say - watch what they do.

CCW Classes In Michigan: Your Guns and Your Kids

As a Firearms Instructor, I have many discussions with local parents who desire to buy and keep a firearm in the home for personal protection. It is not rare in my community for households to be victimized by armed robbers, rapists, and home-invaders.

Accordingly, many Detroit area residents are exploring self-defense alternatives as opposed to just calling the local police department and hoping that help arrives before it is too late. It is no secret that many local law enforcement agencies are woefully understaffed and lack the resources to protect citizens. In fact, Forbes Magazine just announced about a month ago that Detroit was once again named as the "Most Violent City In America" based on 2010 FBI Crime Statistics.

As such, some parents undergo angst and mental anguish weighing whether it makes sense for them to have both children and guns in the home. During the Concealed Pistol License (CPL) class that I teach, I inform my students that guns and children are not a mutually exclusive proposition; proper preparation will enable households to safely have both in the home.

To begin, the biggest concern that parents have about firearms in the home is that their children will find them and play with them. Obviously, this scenario can have disastrous consequences, as the children could cause significant harm to themselves and others.

Thus, it is imperative that safeguards be put into place to keep guns away from children. This requirement is no different from a myriad of other potentially dangerous items found in the typical household. For example, small children should not be allowed to have unfettered access to the following: unattended swimming pools, bleach, rat poison, sharp knives, electrical outlets, and hot stoves. Guns in the home should not be any different.

One way to balance accessibility to firearms while keeping them away from small kids is to investigate the purchase of firearms storage devices. There are several units on the market - available at most gun shops - that allow adults to quickly acquire a loaded gun while restricting access to others. Some devices have keypads requiring a numerical password and others use high-tech gadgetry utilizing fingerprint recognition.

Another option to keep parents' guns away from their children is for the parents to always wear the firearm while at home. The firearm would always be close when needed and would not be accessible to children. This option is not as drastic as some non-gun owners usually speculate. A gun in a holster is comfortable to carry, does not impede movement, and can't be possessed by others.

Further still, the best way to "gun-proof" children is to have a frank dialogue with them about firearms when they are emotionally ready to discuss it. There are no fast and hard rules about a specific age; each child is different. Parents know the maturity level of their children and are best qualified to make that determination.

In fact, children should be taught facts about guns whether or not they are currently in the home. It is pure folly for a parent to think that just because there aren't any guns in his specific home that his child could not either come into contact with a gun or related info outside of the home or learn myths about guns from other sources.

Whether some parents like it or not, children are going to hear info - both true and false - about guns. All segments of our society "teach" children about guns: rap videos, TV shows, popular music, movies, video games, and other neighborhood kids. So, if children are going to be exposed to info about guns, it should be balanced with a talk from the child's parents.

Above all, parents need to educate their kids that there may a gun in the home. The purpose of that firearm is to provide protection against bad people who present danger and harm to the house-hold. As such, it is not a toy and should not be touched if it is located. Furthermore, the danger of wielding a firearm should be made known; the kids should be taught that they can hurt themselves. If the children are not mature enough to abide the wishes of the parents, then safeguards need to be adopted.

There is no credible reason why children and guns can't safefully coexist in a home. It will require training, education, and a frank conversation with the children but it is well worth the effort if it means that the family can be protected from pedophiles, rapists, and home-invaders.

To learn more about educating children about guns in the home, you should consider taking a firearm safety class with a credible trainer.

Violent Crime In Detroit Could Skyrocket In Response To Cuts In Michigan's Cash Assistance Program

Just when we thought that the current level of violent crime in the city of Detroit was as bad as it could possibly get, a new law went into effect yesterday that could possibly usher in a new era of even higher rates of robberies, home invasions, and carjackings.

Yesterday the state of Michigan removed 21,000 Detroiters from its cash assistance program. In one fell swoop a huge number of people in Detroit, who had been in the program for the prior 48 months, were abruptly left with no income.

State cash assistance programs were never designed to support the lifestyle of the chronically unemployed for a lifetime. Rather, they served as an economic safety net for persons who may have experienced a drastic or catastrophic event: serious illness, sudden job loss, divorce, and etc. Accordingly, most people would agree that a 48 month limit for receiving benefits would be just.

However, those affected by the newly adopted change in the state's cash assistance program's eligibility rules had a very short notification period. As such, there is a very real possibility that a percentage of the aforementioned people may resort to violent crime due to desperation.

The city of Detroit, before Michigan's economic bombing, already had a serious violent crime problem. There's hardly a day when there isn't a news broadcast of a litany of serious crimes committed within the borders of our town.

Local law enforcement is doing the best job it can to fight violent crime with the few resources that it has at its disposal. The local police department has taken more officers off desk duty, increased overtime for street patrols, implemented a curfew for teens, stopped answering unverified house alarms, and ran a gun buyback at a local church.

However, the sad reality is that they are seriously under-manned and underfunded to make a difference. They routinely arrive at crime scenes well after the bad guys have left and have the worse crime closure rate of any major city in the country.

The most surprising development, in my opinion, about Detroit's crime problem is our city's leadership refusing to publicly recognize and alert the citizenry about the looming threat of increased violence. They seem all to willing to let the carnage begin in earnest without advising citizens to assume more responsibility for their safety.

The dirty little secret about personal protection that the local police department hopes you never discover is that safety is your responsibility. The role of law enforcement is to investigate crimes after they have occurred. In the meantime, someone has been victimized: raped, robbed, or murdered.

Furthermore, local police do nothing to discourage the fantasy that their job is to prevent citizens from being victims. They tell citizens to "sell-back" their guns and to call them when a crime happens. Well, what happens when you call the police and it takes hours - if not days - to respond to your plea for help?

Answer me this: How bad do things have to get before you make a credible and sensible plan to ensure the safety of your family? I am hereby informing you that the environment in Detroit is the worst shape it has been in decades. In short, it is a great time to be a violent criminal in the city of Detroit.

Don't hold your breath waiting for the police to tell you to buy a handgun. They never will. They don't trust you to be a responsible and a law-abiding citizen.

In closing, you have a choice to make: victim or non-victim. Not making a choice is selecting victimization by default. Buy a handgun, learn how to use it, and legally carry it wherever you go. Consider yourself officially warned.

Detroit Senior Citizens Are Fighting Back Against Violent Crime With Firearms

It is widely believed that senior citizens are prized and coveted targets of violent predators. Robbers, rapists, and home invaders frequently select them for victimization because they are older, less mobile, and are less likely to be able to mount a successful defense. However, recent reports in the media have shown that there are senior citizens in our community who are quite capable and willing to use firearms as equalizers to be safe.

Yesterday, it was reported in the Detroit Free Press Newspaper that an unidentified 88 year-old man with a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) successfully mounted a defense against an armed assailant. The attack happened during broad daylight at a local Detroit animal cruelty shelter. The bad guy was killed and no other injuries were reported.

Earlier this month, a 70 year-old woman Detroit surprised two men who invaded her west-side home. She fired her firearm multiple times at the invaders who compromised a window. It was not known whether any of the predators were injured. The homeowner did not suffer any injuries.

In August of this year, it was reported in the local media that an unidentified retired cop with a CPL exchanged gunfire with an armed assailant during a brazen day-time robbery of of a west-side McDonald's restaurant in Detroit. The bad guy was killed and no other injuries were reported.

In June of this year, it was reported in the local media that an 81 year-old man with a CPL defended himself with a handgun against a carjacking attempt during broad daylight at a post office in Detroit. It was not certain at the time whether the bad guy was struck but the armed senior was injured in the assault and was expected to recover.

These aforementioned stories are important and significant because they dispel false rumors, widely circulated in the law enforcement community, that ordinary (i.e. non-cops) armed citizens can't repel attacks from violent criminals. Furthermore, they destroy the perception that senior citizens are helpless and are incapable of defending themselves.

The truth is abundantly clear - firearms are a great equalizer for citizens to utilize against threats. The aforementioned stories clearly illustrate how the elderly can defend themselves against the young, how the single citizen can defend himself against multiple attackers, and how non-cops can effectively stop predators.

Moreover, these stories also have an important message for Detroit residents who aren't senior citizens: If our older residents can safely and effectively use a firearm for self-defense, then so can you.

If you wish to exercise more involvement in your personal safety, the very first step you need to take is to believe that it is possible. Sometimes, all it takes to believe that you are capable of some specific task - like personal protection - is see documented evidence of others who have already done the task that you wish to perform.

The aforementioned examples prove that firearm-based self-defense is possible. Hence, now you can sufficiently embolden yourself to explore options at your disposal that will enable you to be more safe from violent crime. One such option, is buying a handgun and learning how to use it.

Taking a state of Michigan compliant Concealed Pistol License (CPL) is an excellent starting point. After doing so, you will have learned basic fundamental firearm safety rules, handgun handling skills, handgun buying considerations, and the laws in Michigan that address lethal force and self-defense.

You have nothing to lose. Refuse to be a victim. Get trained and be safe.

Legally Armed In Detroit (L.A.I.D.) Second Annual Picnic Recap

This past Sunday, August 28th, Legally Armed In Detroit (LAID) held its second annual Open Carry Picnic at Belle Isle Park. Rick Ector, owner of the LAID blog, had previously predicted that at least 100 armed citizens would be in attendance - in total - throughout the day. The high water mark for attendance was around the 3:00pm hour. A steady stream of picnic-goers arrived and departed throughout the day. The picnic's hours of operation was from 10:00am through 8:00pm. The relatively long length of the affair (10 hours) afforded all who wanted to attend an opportunity to be there.

Overall, the picnic was an awesome affair. The weather was perfect and the shelter provided a comfortable environment for fun. Attendees discussed open carry related topics, played cards, tossed horseshoes, and barbecued food on the grill.

As expected, there were no incidents. Our event was peaceful and fun. The local cops dropped by only once to tell the organizers to move their cars. Of course, the vehicles were only there because the picnic site was trashed before the event started. The cops were told that as soon as we could clean up the mess, the cars would be unloaded and moved.

Also, I had an opportunity to talk with the Park Manager to complain about the shelter's condition when we first arrived. He apologized and explained that vagrants and drug addicts "probably" turned over all of the trash cans to look for bottles with redeemable deposits. The explanation was plausible but I still didn't appreciate having to clean up the mess.

The main goals of the picnic were to exercise our right to keep and bear arms and to educate the public about the legality of Open Carry in both the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit. However, I have now added a new goal - to provide a venue for firearms enthusiasts to congregate and fellowship.

Each Open Carry outing provides an opportunity to see others who share our lifestyle - lawfully armed citizens. Many familiar faces were present during the day. Those persons almost never miss our events. They are truly the folks who encourage me by their mere presence and validate my activities - such as this picnic.

Alternatively, these outings also draw new friends "into the fold." For example, I finally met some "Facebook friends" with whom I had "known" for quite some time but never had actually met. Also, I met some people on Sunday with whom I had never had the opportunity to have prior contact. They heard about the event in the media and felt a strong desire to show up. I'm glad they came; I made some new friends.

Our picnic received a good amount of local publicity. Our event was covered by the following: Fox2 News Detroit, The Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, and WWJ-950AM. I have seen most of the mainstream media accounts of our affair and don't have many complaints. I consider it a victory if the story is balanced and does not characterize us as "gun nuts" who don't get out much.

Personally, I had many highlights at the picnic. However, if I had to single out just one experience it would be meeting the brother and sister of the late General Laney. In just a short period of time, I learned a ton about Michigan gun rights history. I will continue to pursue a friendship with the Laney family. They have much to say that needs to be heard before this piece of our history is lost. Stay tuned.

A Real Solution To Detroit's Violent Crime Problem

There has been a lot of hand-wringing lately by the law enforcement community about what needs to be done to quell the violent crime problem in the city of Detroit. Currently, the city of Detroit is on pace to break a 10 year-old record for the most homicides.

The Detroit Police Department (DPD) is trying just about every tactic they know to prevent the city from registering more homicides on the record books. Within the last month, they have announced plans to do the following: pull officers off desk jobs to conduct patrols, force officers to work 12 hour shifts, stop pretending to respond to non-human verified house alarms, and adopt a curfew for teens to be off the streets after dark.

Regrettably, these actions alone will not stop the violence. The perfect storm of variables that create crime are outside of DPD's control and remain unaddressed: Michigan Dept. of Corrections releasing violent criminals early, lenient judges treating criminals with kid gloves, dismal police response times, poor economic climate, illiteracy, poor educational system, and sour police and community relations.

The solutions to these underlying problems are beyond the scope of the law enforcement community. Further, they are complex and will ultimately require an economic investment that we currently can't afford. The city has been dangerously close to being forced into receivership for quite some time. That fact alone explains why we have an underfunded and understaffed police force and provides insight as to how the city has decided not to cut and maintain the landscaping on public property.

The solution to the current root causes of violent crime in Detroit will not happen in the near future. In the interim, there is a remedy available to protect the residents of Detroit but you won't hear the law enforcement community endorse it. The solution is for every person to become responsible for their own personal safety and the welfare of their families.

Currently, the city of Detroit is a predator's paradise. The police here consistently arrive to crime scenes well after the criminal has left. To add insult to injury - pun not intended - the police have an atrociously poor case closure percentage.

Thus, if a bad guy is not caught in the act of committing a crime, he will likely not be caught and will be free to do more mayhem in the community. Moreover, in the very few cases where the bad guys are actually apprehended it is likely that they will receive a lenient sentence and soon be back to their illicit trade of violent crime.

Every so often in the city of Detroit, you will hear of a story in the media whereby a person, who was legally armed, stopped a bad guy. Maybe you heard about the citizens who thwarted a robbery in an east-side barber shop. Or perhaps, you heard about two separate incidents whereby retired cops fought back against armed thugs at a post office or at the McDonald's restaurant in the University District.

The solution to our violent crime problem in Detroit is to make raping, robbing, and carjacking bad decisions that carry harsh consequences. At present, it is a no-brainer for thugs to wave a gun at an unarmed citizen to satisfy their selfish desires and whims. There is virtually no down-side even if they, by a random stroke of bad luck, manage to get apprehended later by the authorities.

Currently, there aren't enough firearms being carried by law abiding citizens to stem the incidence of violent crime. If the number of citizens in Detroit who legally carried arms was to double, the outcome would be predictable. We would witness the arrival of a tipping point whereby crime would plummet due to a criminal's fear of being shot or killed by his intended victim.

I am mindful that toting a pistol is not for everybody but for those that can handle the responsibility, the results would be well worth the effort. Further, even the most die-hard anti-gun critic would also be shielded from crime, as bad guys might assume that he was armed and leave him alone.

Carrying a firearm is not the answer to everything that ails Detroit. However, it is the answer to our current out of control violent crime problem. We must remove the certainty of success that now exists within the vocations of robbery, sexual assault, and carjacking. Until then, we will only witness more well-intentioned hand-wringing from our city leaders who are clueless as to how our citizens should be protected.

Don't set yourself up for victimhood. Be proactive. Protect your family. Buy a firearm, learn how to use it, and be safe.
