Ask The Michigan Firearm Instructor: Suicide Prevention Tactic at Gun Range

Ask The Michigan Firearm Instructor: Suicide Prevention Tactic at Gun Range

Q: Hi Rick Ector, I took your CPL course in August and I have question for you. I just went to the gun range and there is a policy that if you are renting a gun - which I am - you can't go on the range alone. Is that typical? I'm renting because I haven't found a gun that is perfect yet. I was there 3 weeks ago and didn't have a problem and I've been doing research and haven't read this anywhere, so I'm just curious. Thanks for your thoughts.

A: The policy of not renting firearms to persons attending a range by themselves is a suicide prevention measure adopted by several ranges in the area. Every so often a suicidal person would arrive at a gun range by himself, rent a gun, and then fatally shoot himself. The range is hoping that a suicidal person would not talk an unwitting accomplice to accompany him on a suicide attempt. I do not have any stats to show whether this policy is effective.
