Michigan CPL Class FAQ: How Often Should I Clean My Handgun?

Michigan CPL Class FAQ: How Often Should I Clean My Handgun?
Q: How often should I clean my handgun?

A: You should regularly clean your handgun, as directed by your Operator's Guide. Most Operator's Guides will, at a minimum, instruct you to clean your handgun after every usage. Further, if you maintain your marksmanship skills by practicing at an approved range at least once per month, you will be cleaning your handgun at least 12 times per year.

To illustrate, I consulted with a Glock Operator's Guide to see what they endorsed as a proper cleaning protocol for their pistols. They specified the following:
1. When brand new, before the first time it is fired.
2. At least once per month, plus
3. After each time it is fired, plus
4. As required, depending on the weather where it is being used, if it has been dropped, or if any malfunctions have been observed.

Accordingly, cleaning your handgun will be an ongoing activity, as dictated by your Operator's Guide. If you own a Glock pistol, you will at a minimum be cleaning your handgun every month.

Cleaning a handgun is not a difficult task. In fact, it can be done fairly quickly in a safe manner. Be sure to follow all applicable firearm safety rules and all manufacturer specific guidelines for the safe operation of your handgun.
