Firearm Safety Tip: Never Attempt To Clean A Loaded Gun

Firearm Safety Tip: Never Attempt To Clean A Loaded Gun
Jose Canseco joins the ever growing list of notable people who have the distinct honor of shooting themselves while attempting to clean a firearm. Cleaning a semi-automatic handgun is a relatively easy, simple, and safe activity, if you follow a few common sense and easy to understand fundamental firearm safety tips. Users seem to tragically fail at the first step: unloading the firearm.
First and foremost, one should point his firearm in a safe direction while keeping all of his fingers off the trigger. Then the magazine should be removed. Then and only then should the user manipulate the slide to check the chamber while simultaneously emptying the chamber, if necessary. Order is important because if you clear the chamber before removing the magazine, your firearm may still be loaded.
Furthermore, it would also be a good idea to check, double-check, and triple-check that the magazine is removed and that the chamber is empty. Once the firearm is truly unloaded, should the operator then proceed with field stripping and cleaning his firearm.
A firearm is not a complicated device to safely own and operate. However, it does require one to know, follow, and adhere to some simple gun safety rules each and every time he comes into contact with a handgun.
