Let It Rip Weekend: Rick Ector Backs Verdict In Zimmerman Case On Local Detroit TV Show

In the aftermath of the George Zimmerman "Not Guilty" verdict a short time ago, I appeared on a local Detroit talk show supporting the verdict.

In my opinion, the prosecution failed to prove that Zimmerman was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. A couple of days prior to this appearance, I correctly predicted on live TV during a local media appearance the result that caught some people off-guard.

The show was hosted by Fox2 Detroit's Taryn Asher and Charley Langton. My debate opponent was so rude and childish that I won't mention his name on my blog. Check out the video below and please leave feedback.

Rick Ector Discusses Post-Bankruptcy Filing Safety Considerations in Detroit on "Cam and Company"

A couple of days ago, I made another appearance on the "Cam and Company Show."

As you may have heard the show still airs daily on the NRANews web site, but at a new time: 2:00pm - 5:00pm EST. The fourth hour and additional new hour of coverage is on the Sportsman Channel.

During the show we discussed public safety concerns that Detroit residents have in the aftermath of that city's recent Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy filing. Make no mistake about it, Detroit has been a violent place for quite some time and a bankruptcy filing makes residents even more uncomfortable. Watch the video below to hear my thoughts on the subject.

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: Hi Rick! Do you have any comrades in the Tennessee area that give Handgun Safety Classes?

Michigan CPL Class FAQ: How Much Of A Hassle Is It To Fly To Las Vegas With Your Handgun?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: I have plans to fly to vegas this month, first time flying with a firearm (or even thinking of the sort). What should I expect? My lady is a drama-queen. Is it even worth it? Went in 2010, but this time I would like to visit Old Vegas also.

A: Flying with your firearm is not that big of a deal. Check with the TSA's web site for packaging and declaration requirements and the web site of your airline for their specific firearm travel requirements.

In short, you will need to make sure your firearm is unloaded, has a lock, and is secured in a case. Your magazines should be empty and your ammo should be in its own secured box. You should also have a lock, preferably a TSA compliant one, on your luggage containing the firearm and the ammo. You can NOT carry on the luggage containing the firearm and the ammo. You will need to both check it and declare it to the airline.

As for whether it is worth it or not, you should plan out where you will be going and checking it against the local pistol-free zones. If you find that everywhere you will be going is a place where you can't take your firearm, you might consider leaving it with a trusted friend or family member.

In addition, you will need to get updated on the local gun laws. Do not make the assumption that they are identical to Michigan's. If you do take your firearm with you, you will need to secure it when you go to PFZs. That might mean the safe in your room or in a secured gun safe in your rental car. Do your homework, make the best decision for your situation, and most importantly, have a great time.

Michigan Firearms FAQ: Are There Any Places Where I Can Have My Firearm Cleaned?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: For those of us who either don't have time, don't like to, or don't know how to clean/maintain our firearms, are there places that offer this service?

A: Yes, there are resources available to either teach you how to clean your firearm or offer to clean it for you. I would first check with your favorite firearms instructor or neighborhood gun range for availability. I offer this service for $35.

As you are probably aware, you "should" clean your firearm after every time that you use it, except immediately after defending yourself with it. As such, you will need to at least clean your firearm monthly if you are adequately maintaining your shooting ability.

Michigan Firearms FAQ: Does Michigan Require Registration Of Curio and Relic Handguns?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: Ok Rick, I have one for you. In Michigan if someone possesses a Curio and Relic Federal Firearms License (FFL03CR) which allows them to collect and have shipped directly to them any weapon classified as a curio and relic, do they have to send in a pistol registration form to the state of Michigan when they take possession?

A: Subsection 7 of MCL 28.422 states in part, "This section does not apply to the purchase of pistols from wholesalers by dealers regularly engaged in the business of selling pistols at retail, or to the sale, barter, or exchange of pistols kept as relics or curios not made for modern ammunition or permanently deactivated."

So, you do not need to have a curio or relic firearm purchased with your federal C&R License registered within the state of Michigan, unless you plan on shooting it or carrying it.

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Maintain Unoccupied Homes In Your Neighborhood

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Maintain Unoccupied Homes In Your Neighborhood

One way of keeping bad guys out of your neighborhood is to organize folks in your community to upkeep the property of unoccupied homes.

In a perfect world, the owner of the property would either properly maintain his property or the local unit of government would do so and charge him a cleaning fee or a fine.

Tending to a neglected property is a benefit to community, as a crime preventive measure. Bad guys routinely cruise the city's neighborhoods looking for homes to invade, burglarize, and scrap down to the frame.

If a property gets vandalized such that windows and doors are stolen, the home becomes not only an eye-sore for the community but many crimes could ultimately be committed on its premises: drug dealing, drug use, prostitution, dumping, and dead body disposal.

The solution is to remove the bait: uncut lawns and uncut bushes. Moreover, another benefit is that the home could be sold faster is it is being properly maintained and a solid family of tax paying citizens would be added to the community.

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Install A Fence That Doesn't Sacrifice Security For Privacy

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Install A Fence That Doesn't Sacrifice Security For Privacy

Many people are tempted to install a privacy fence around their property to keep prying eyes from observing their activities while they are at home. Whereas it is true that a privacy fence will prevent neighbors from ogling and staring at a person sunbathing in her backyard, it can also provide cover for a person who has scaled over it to commit a burglary.

Fences, in general, provide an extra layer of security around a home by requiring would-be criminals to exert more effort to mount an attack than would be necessary against a home without a fence.

Most fencing solutions are not designed to be impenetrable. All a bad guy has to do to get past most fences is to simply climb over it, which is not beyond the skill-set of a common crook. If the compromised fence is a privacy fence, the crook will also have the benefit of the fence hiding the actual break-in from the view of neighbors.

A fence surrounding the property of a residence is a good idea. However, if a privacy fence is installed, it can be counter-productive and facilitate an attack on your home.

Michigan Personal Protection Tip: Exercise Discretion About The Company You Keep

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Exercise Discretion About The Company You Keep

A vehicle after it has been customized and personalized can be informally used as a form of identification of the driver. If the vehicle's owner has either questionable character or has enemies who seek to harm him, any person in that vehicle could be at risk for an attack by a determined third person.

Yesterday, it was reported in the media that a man was shot dead in a Detroit liquor store's parking lot after two assailants allegedly fired upon him at least 37 times. It was mentioned in the broadcast that it may have been a case of mistaken identity, as the driver did not own the vehicle. He had allegedly borrowed it to run an errand to the local neighborhood store.

As such, you should exercise discretion about the company you keep, even if the two of you are amiable. Enemies of your friend care as much about you as they care about the person they are trying to harm.

Michigan Personal Protection Tip: Properly Secure Your Garage Door Remotes

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Properly Secure Your Garage Door Remotes

The quickest and best way for an invader to gain access to your garage - and possibly your home if it is attached - is to acquire your garage door remote.

Once a bad guy gains access to your garage, he has an opportunity to not only steal the personal property inside of it but might even breach the lightly secured door leading to your residence.

Most people keep their remote on the driver-side visor of their vehicle. As such, it is imperative that you ensure that your vehicle's windows are rolled up and that you lock your car when you exit it.

For example, it was reported yesterday in the media that a thief stole a garage remote from an unlocked car in Clawson. That theft led to the opportunity to steal a motorcycle from the car owner's garage.

Michigan Personal Protection Tip: Secure Your Attached Garage From Invaders

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Secure Your Attached Garage From Invaders

An attached garage with deficient security controls will allow easy access to your home. Garages aren't usually scrutinized as severely as a residence for security. As such, if a bad guy can get into your garage, he is just one step away from getting into your home.

For starters, once your garage has been compromised, it is only a matter of time before the door leading to the home will be used to enter. Most of these doors lack sufficient controls: deadbolt locks, upgraded strike plates and screws, and brace bars placed under the handle.

One way bad guys gain access to your garage is to look into a window and use a modified coat hanger to activate the garage door's emergency release lever. Once this has been done, he can manually pull open the garage door and gain access to valuable goods: vehicles, scooters, bicycles, mowers, snow blowers, tools, and etc.

Thus, as a counter-measure, you should remove the rope or chain connected to the garage door's emergency release lever and frost your windows so that no one looking into them can scope out both the opener and any valuables that could be deemed worthy of being stolen.

Moreover, you should always keep the door closed when you are not actively using the garage. In addition, you should also consider adding security to the garage windows (e.g. fortifying film, key activated locks, and bars), adding motion activated lighting around the garage, and adding a security system to monitor and detect movement around your garage.

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Remember Where You Parked Your Vehicle

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Remember Where You Parked Your Vehicle

Parking lots are dangerous places to be. As such, you need to minimize the amount of time that you spend in them. One strategy to accomplish that is to remember where you parked your vehicle. If you know exactly where you are going, it won't take you long to get there.

When exiting your vehicle, look around for landmarks, aisle numbers on signs, names of streets, and features of the venue you are visiting to give you memory "joggers" to help you find your car. If necessary, quickly write this info on a slip of paper and put it your pocket or take a quick picture your cell phone camera. A person looking for a lost car sticks out like a sore thumb. Predators cruising the lot for victims will have no difficulty seeing him.

A couple of months ago, I helped a friend find her car at a benefit we had both attended. Her vehicle, as it turned out, was several blocks away and she had absolutely no clue where she had parked her car. Had she not had me driving her around downtown, she would have been at an elevated risk of being attacked because she would have been walking haphazardly, without a sense of purpose, and not paying attention to her surroundings.

Michigan Home Security Tip: Install Security Grills On Your Windows

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Install Security Grills On Your Windows

There are a ton of security measures available in the marketplace to better enable you to keep bad guys out of your home. Some of the more extreme measures may make your home look and feel like a prison.

Nothing is perhaps more unsightly than bars on your windows. However, if you have a neighborhood full of people who never see anything and if the local police department treats burglary calls as low priority, installing grills on your windows is the only acceptable window security option short of leaving town.

Getting inside of the average home is not very difficult. All a bad guy really needs to do is toss a brick into a back window and climb inside. If you have an alarm monitoring service, nosy neighbors, and a fast responding police department, you may force the home invader to do the equivalent of a "smash and grab," in which he will quickly grab valuables in plain sight and exit. Otherwise, he could have the entire day to rob you blind while you are at work.

Besides detracting from your home's appearance, you would want to also make sure that the bars do not endanger your safety during a fire. Any safety grill system that you use should be designed so that it can be quickly opened from the inside. Moreover, regular safety drills should be practiced to ensure that everyone in your home knows how to safely open the grill in an expeditious manner.
