Three Detroit Defensive Gun Use Incidents Shatter Self-Defense Myth

A commonly used justification against the lawful carry of firearms for personal protection is that the bad guys have the element of surprise when they attack. It follows from this line of reasoning that law-abiding citizens, who have guns pointed at them from within the hands of predators, will be unable to draw their own handguns to mount an effective defense.
However, as recounted in an often quoted adage "what many people know is simply not true." As proof, three distinct defensive gun use (DGU) stories that transpired in metro-Detroit within the past week, are summarized in this article. It has been proven that armed victims are capable of lawfully and successfully fighting off violent thugs, even when the bad guys produce their guns first.

To begin, Fox2 News Detroit reported last night that a man was attacked in Oak Park - a Detroit suburb - by two teens he agreed to meet for the purchase of a pair of designer eye-glasses. When the victim forked over the asking price of $500, the teens produced guns and announced a robbery. The would-be victim produced a firearm of his own and shot both robbers. The victim was not harmed. The bad guys received treatment at an area hospital and have been arrested pending criminal charges.

In addition, the Detroit Free Press reported yesterday that a 58 year-old cab driver in Detroit was forced to defend himself over the previous weekend when his fare - a 32 year-old man - announced a robbery. The cabbie, in response to a weapon being produced, drew his own firearm and shot the bad guy. The driver was not hurt, but the would-be jacker is in critical condition at a local hospital.

Moreover, Fox2 News Detroit reported on this past Tuesday that two armed bad guys announced a day-time mugging and carjacking attempt of two would-be victims in Detroit, who were making repairs to a vehicle on the street. One victim was injured when he got into a struggle with one of the bad guys for the control of the gun produced for the robbery. The other victim produced a firearm and shot both bad guys. One jacker was killed at the scene and the other fled the area. The injured victim is expected to survive.

These aforementioned accounts are significant. They prove that not only is it possible for citizens to defend themselves against the lawless but they also send a warning to the bad guys in our community. Another myth bites the dust.

Detroit Community Safety Advocate Launches Fundraiser To Teach Women How To Shoot

Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms trainer based in Detroit Michigan, launches fundraiser to teach local women how to operate handguns.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Detroit, MI - November 23, 2012 - Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer and gun rights activist based in Detroit Michigan, has launched a fundraiser to provide FREE firearms training for local women.

Ector is raising the funds because he says he is "sick and tired of hearing about about the level of violent crime in Detroit." A good percentage of that crime, Ector adds, is directed towards women. He also goes on to say, "From the feedback we received from the FREE firearms training we gave to 40 women this past August, we know that women are interested in learning more about guns. This FREE training will remove barriers to entry and help empower more local ladies."

Ector's blog, "Legally Armed In Detroit," is selling metallic collectible challenge coins bearing the organization's logo to offset training expenses: gun rentals, range time, ammunition costs, and targets. Ector is hoping that followers of his blog who also believe in his goal - training local women how to operate firearms - will buy the $25 coins to raise the necessary funds.

The fundraising campaign is limited to 100 challenge coins and is expected to continue through the holiday shopping season. Persons interested in supporting this local training effort, should visit their blog to place an order online.

Personal Protection Tips: Take Stalking Incidents Seriously

Personal Protection Tips: Take Stalking Incidents Seriously - Stalking generally refers to harassing or threatening behavior that an individual engages in repeatedly, such as following a person, appearing at a person's home or place of business, making harassing phone calls, leaving written messages or objects, or vandalizing a person's property.

According to statistics tabulated in the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, 16% of women and 5% of men respondents stated that they were very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed because of a stalking incident.

Each situation is unique however that does not eliminate the need to have the issue resolved. It could be a serious mistake to not seek and implement an effective solution and to instead merely hope that the stalking behavior will safely abate over time. Some solutions may require involving the authorities, a Personal Protection Order, or other personal protection remedies.

Personal Protection Tips: Minimize Time Spent In A Parked Car

Personal Protection Tip: Minimize Time Spent In A Parked Car - Sitting in a vehicle for a prolonged period of time can put you at an elevated risk of being selected as a target. A basic tenet of personal protection is that if you are outside of a residence or another venue is to always be circulating or in motion.

Common activities that people often engage in while in a parked car include waiting on another person to exit a home or conducting a person-to-person conversation in the car outside of the home for privacy. Both aforementioned activities usually result with any occupants of the car not being actively aware of the environment outside of the car. As such, an opportunistic predator may decide to strike. Thus, as a practical matter don't spend much time in a parked vehicle.

Personal Protection Tips: Never Enter A Burglarized Dwelling Until It's Been Cleared - If you return to a residence or a building that you suspect has been broken into, vandalized, or burglarized do not enter it. It is very possible that the bad guys may still be present and could present a danger to your safety and well-being. Instead, you should call the authorities and wait until they arrive to clear the building.

Personal Protection Tips: Hitchhiking is a Bad Idea

Personal Protection Tips: Hitchhiking is a Bad Idea - Please do not entertain any ideas of either picking up and transporting strangers in your vehicle or soliciting a stranger for a ride. Hitchhiking is potentially dangerous because you will know absolutely nothing about the other person: driver or hitchhiker. Be mindful that appearances are often deceiving and a wrong encounter could lead to a bad experience.

Personal Protection Tips: Where Possible, Avoid Walking To Your Vehicle Alone

Personal Protection Tips: Where Possible, Avoid Walking To Your Vehicle Alone. During these perilous and dangerous times, women and senior citizens are especially vulnerable to the depredations of predators while entering parking lots and driveways.

As such, they should not walk to their vehicles alone unless it can't be avoided. When leaving home, a loved one should escort them to their cars and be available to walk them from their cars when they return.

Also, if women and seniors are at a job, church, or some other social function then a co-worker, security guard, or a group of other people leaving the facility should all go to the parking lot together. A violent crime, such as a robbery or a carjacking, can occur at any time and at any hour. There is greater safety in numbers.

Personal Protection Tips: f You Hear Gunfire - Get Down!

Personal Protection Tips: If You Hear Gunfire - Get Down! In a city in which as many as 1,000 non-fatal shootings occur every year, it is imperative that you take appropriate action should unexpected gunfire erupts. If you should ever hear the unmistakable clamor of shots ringing out, immediately stop whatever you are doing and get your body down to the ground.

As the old adage says, "Bullets don't have any names on them." By dropping to the ground, you will reduce the likelihood of being struck by an errant bullet. This tactic should be deployed regardless of your location - at home or outside of it. Furthermore, if you are at home you should not walk over to the nearest window and look out of it, for obvious reasons.

Personal Protection Tips: Commit Key Phone Numbers To Memory

Personal Protection Tips: Commit Key Phone Numbers To Memory - With the advent of technology, especially the prevalence and ubiquity of cell phones, many people today do not make the effort of memorizing key telephone numbers.

They rationalize that they can just look up the needed contact info from their cell phone. However, there may come a day in which you need emergency assistance but do not have access to your phone. Thus, at a minimum, you should commit to memory the phone numbers of all close family members and your attorney.
