Personal Protection Tip: Deactivate Milk Chutes

Personal Protection Tip: Many older homes still have fully functional milk chutes. These portals were designed for dairy deliverymen to deliver milk, eggs, vegetables, and other perishable items to consumers. However, home delivery of the aforementioned items waned as late as the 1970's.

Currently, these openings not only waste energy but also present a security issue. It is not uncommon for burglars to enlist the aid of someone small enough to enter the home through this opening to facilitate a break-in. Accordingly, all homes with functioning milk chutes should be retrofitted to prevent unwanted intruders. The openings can readily be sealed with bricks by a competent mason.

Recap: Jesse Jackson's Impotent Protest Against The Action Impact Gun Range

This past Saturday, the anachronistic and increasingly irrelevant Reverend Jesse Jackson called for an anti-violence rally against 25 gun ranges in the United States. Despite his personal indiscretions, he somehow felt justified to ask dads during Fathers Day Weekend all across our great nation to adopt his mantra of "Guns Out = Jobs In."

According to the puzzling logic of Jackson, the local communities where the targeted gun shops operate are stifling the creation of jobs, which if you believe Jackson, is the root cause of urban violence. Somehow, Jackson manages to ignore the fact that these gun ranges employ people, including African Americans, who pay taxes. Also, those very same businesses pay income taxes and collect sales taxes on relatively expensive products.

Further, in an ironic twist Jackson claimed that one of the selected gun ranges - Action Impact of Southfield, Michigan - was selected for a demonstration because of the so-called history of Eight Mile Road being a dividing between the races in the Detroit area. Jackson may not have been entirely truthful.

The dirty little secret is that there are no operating gun ranges within the geographical borders of Detroit. He obviously chose Action Impact because it is located just outside the city of Detroit border. Thusly, the entire premise of Jackson's anti-gun campaign has been proven to be false. As mentioned earlier, there are no gun shops in Detroit. So, where are the jobs?

Moreover, Jackson's so-called rally at the Action Impact gun range did have an unintended effect. He actually brought the so-called divided people - whites and blacks - together to mount a counter-protest. Jackson's designated minion, the Operation Push Detroit Chairman, and two other people doubling as props were given a most proper reception from about 50 freedom and gun loving folks of all hues.

The aforementioned demonstration did garner interest from the local media. However, when the event unfolded, it was quite evident that Jackson's message was ignored by a community over-run with violent criminals and local law enforcement's ability to keep crime in check. In fact, as of June 10th there have been 152 homicides in the city Detroit alone per DPD's web site. Jackson has lost touch with the community he is trying to lead.

No one in the metro-Detroit area is buying the rhetoric Jackson is selling. Criminals do not buy their firearms from gun ranges. Make no mistake about it, gun ranges are making a lot of money these days by selling their products to law-abiding citizens who have to jump through bureaucratic hoops and governmental obstructions to legally buy handguns: Handgun Purchase Permits or issued Michigan Concealed Pistol Licenses, Basic Pistol Safety Questionnaires, and background checks. Maybe Jackson is looking for a way to cash in on this cash cow created criminals who in many cases are forcing the hands of good people wishing to not be victims.

Of all the media that covered the story, only one outlet (CBS Detroit), had the integrity to even mention that there was a counter-demonstration that also significantly outnumbered Jackson's three stooges. Furthermore, other mainstream media stations grossly inflated Jackson's camp at a tally of twelve - a far cry from the actual number of three.

Jackson embarrassed himself and his latest so-called movement this past weekend. All it took to make that happen were concerned citizens who support local gun rights groups, such as "Legally Armed In Detroit" and "Michigan Open Carry, Inc." No longer are citizens content to let out-of-touch and out-of-town race-baiters divide us from each other and our firearms.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Always Use A Holster When Carrying A Handgun

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: A firearm should always be carried in a holster when carried. Doing so provides safety for the carrier by protecting the trigger from being accidentally pulled. A variety of holsters exist in the marketplace at many price points. Thus, there is no sane reason why a person legally carrying a handgun should not utilize a holster.

Earlier today, it was reported that a Michigan man accidentally shot himself in his penis while attempting to adjust his unholstered firearm. Not only did this idiot seriously injure himself, but he is subject to being charged criminally for a negligent discharge resulting in injury. To boot, he will probably also lose his Concealed Pistol License. Don't pull a "Plaxico." Use a holster every single time that you carry a handgun.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Be Mindful Of What You Publish Online

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Be mindful of what you post online via social media. Comments made online can be readily taken out of context and attributed to you under less than desirable circumstances.

For example, if a CPL-holder makes a lot of online statements about what he or she might do under certain circumstances - such as while being criminally attacked - those words could be used to paint an unflattering characterization.

In this current technological era, law enforcement agencies are increasingly scrutinizing personal social media pages during their criminal investigations. So, while it is true that the totality of the circumstance should be given due consideration, CPL-holders should exercise restraint regarding their response to hypothetical scenarios.

In short, don't give law enforcement any reason to view you as anything other than a law-abiding citizen who was attacked without provocation.

Personal Protection Tip: Plan Routes To Unfamiliar Destinations

Personal Protection Tip: One way to enhance personal safety is to adequately prepare for errands, outings, and trips. Before heading to an unfamiliar venue, you should map out a route to the location. Available tools at your disposal include the following: Google Maps, a navigation application on your cell phone, an in-car GPS unit, and directions from the host.

Moreover, if you plan to attend a function at night, it is advised to do a trial run during the day-time hours on a prior date. Other suggestions include having at least a full tank of gas and directions to police stations and hospitals close to your planned route.

Personal Protection Tip: Broadcast Only Positive Body Language Cues

Personal Protection Tip: Are you broadcasting signals to violent predators that you are safe to victimize? Researchers have consistently published studies that show that non-verbal communication accounts for about 90 percent of what "we say" to others around us. Couple that fact with the results from a classic and widely lauded scientific study, conducted by researchers Betty Grayson and Morris I. Stein, we can easily and readily determine how a person's body language broadcasts hints about his vulnerability.

In the aforementioned study, the researchers asked convicted criminals to view a video of different pedestrians walking down a busy street and to pick out which persons they would most likely rob or rape. Common characteristics of the people selected for victimization include the following: distracted mental state, weak posture, slow and unsure gait, and length of stride. Expected characteristics such as size, gender, and age were not significant. Thus, one way to flunk a predator's "Victim Selection Test" is to be aware, walk upright with head held up, and with a fluid confident brisk stride.

Personal Protection Tip: Limit Personal Info Published In Social Medi

Personal Protection Tip: Be especially careful with information that you publish about yourself over the public Internet. Of special interest to privacy advocates are location sharing applications such as FourSquare. This application enables users to specify their current location or - alternatively speaking - to name where they are not located (e.g. home).

This information could have adverse safety implications, if there are burglars, stalkers, rapists, or violent exes interested in finding the person being tracked. Furthermore, an analysis of your activity stream can also reveal any habits of routine that may also compromise your safety. Thus, if you should utilize a location tracking application, such as FourSquare, make sure that you vet and set appropriate security options to limit your online exposure from undesirable persons and strangers.

Personal Protection Tip: Harden Children Against Pedophiles With "Code Words"

Personal Protection Tip: Despite our best attempts to educate our small children about the perils of "stranger danger," many children are violated by pedophiles who win over their trust. Furthermore, it should be noted that a significant number of child abductions and criminally sexual attacks that occur every year are done by people who are "known" by the child - neighbors, family members, and friends of the family.

A common ruse used by predators of small children is to tell the kids that their parents have been in a terrible accident and that they need to get in the car so he can take them to see their parents. One tactic to deter predators winning over your child's trust is to give them a "code-word." Teach your child this word and make sure that they are to never go with ANYONE who doesn't know this word. If, by chance, you ever need to use this code, change it afterwards with your child.
