Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Michigan CPL-Holders Will Be Able To Carry TASERs Soon

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip:

Michigan is expected soon to join the ranks of several other states that allow civilians to carry TASERs. Under pending legislation awaiting the signature of Governor Snyder, persons who possess a valid CPL and have been trained in the usage, risks, and effects of TASERs will be allowed to own, possess, and carry them. This development is great news for people who want personal protection options other than firearms.

Personal Protection Tip: Attach Appliances To Electrical Timers

Personal Protection Tip: One method to discourage burglaries of your residence is to strategically attach appliances to electrical timer-outlets to simulate occupancy. Devices to be controlled by a timer include - but is not limited to - television sets, table lamps, stereo systems, and radios. Please be mindful that this strategy alone will not discourage all would-be home invaders but it may just be the thing that makes a predator select an easier target.

Rick Ector To Debate TASERs on the "Charlie Langton Show" - Monday, April 30th, 2012

Tomorrow morning at 8a.m. - April 30th, 2012 - I will make another appearance on the "Charlie Langton Show" on station WXYT at radio frequency 1270 AM. We'll probably do two live segments live in the studio. It is expected that Mr. Ron "Buzz Words" Scott (Coalition Against Police Brutality) will also be joining the discussion.

During the conversation over the air we will discuss whether TASERs should be legal for Concealed Pistol License (CPL) holders. Last week, Mr. Scott and I debated the merits of some civilians carrying TASERs on Fox2 Detroit's TV show "Let It Rip." Presumably, we will pick up the discussion where we ended it last week.

A couple of weeks ago, the state of Michigan House joined the state of Michigan Senate in approving a bill that addressed TASER ownership for some Michigan residents (i.e. CPL-holders).

Is The National Rifle Association (NRA) An Organization For Black People?

Last weekend, I spent a few days in St. Louis to attend the National Rifle Association's (NRA) 2012 Annual Meeting. While I was there, both as a member and as a gun rights blogger, it had been brought to my attention by fellow convention attendees that some people in the blogosphere were decrying the organization's lack of diversity, as evidenced by a lack of women and minorities at the St. Louis conference.

The NRA Has An Image Problem: Only Older White Males Need Apply

A quick query via Google quickly turned up a couple of articles where the NRA was panned for being an organization that either apparently caters only to or only draws interest from middle-aged white men:

A post by Nicholas Phillips of the Riverfront Times observed, "There are indeed dozens of African Americans at the conference, all but a few working as cooks, custodians and security."

Another post by The Economist wrote, "White males, the gun-loving sector of American society, also make up an increasingly smaller percentage of the population. What the industry actually needs is more Latino, black and female gun enthusiasts. But the NRA isn’t delivering these. The people who turn up to NRA conventions, like the one held this week in St Louis, remain older white men."

It doesn't surprise me at all, that the anti-gunners would use any excuse, such as a lack of diversity, to make the NRA look bad. Usually, foes of the Second Amendment make bold, outrageous, and patently false statements to mislead the undecided masses: Brady Campaign: NRA to Blame for Trayvon Martin Shooting Too, The NRA Wants the Law Protecting Trayvon Martin's Killer in All 50 States, and Brady Campaign President: NRA Put ‘the Gun in George Zimmerman’s Hands’

However, I will readily admit that the NRA has not made any significant progress or inroads towards increasing the number of black people in the organization and at its annual conventions. My attendance at the conference last week in St. Louis was my second NRA national convention. By my own personal accounting, I met twelve (12) black persons in attendance at the conference in St. Louis. I may have missed a few but not many.

Previously, I had attended the 2010 meeting in Charlotte. Sadly, I must report that both aforementioned events lacked significant participation by black people. The $64,000 question is why aren't there more black people joining the NRA and attending its annual conferences?

Some Black Firearm Owners Do Not Feel Welcome As Prospective Members

One frequently cited reason, given to me by a number of black firearm owners, is the perception that blacks feel that they would not be welcome. Personally, I had some reservations about attending my first conference. However, I went anyway. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that not only did I have an awesome trip but I made many friends that I reconnected with on my trip last weekend. The great time I experienced in Charlotte in 2010 was exceeded by my experiences in St. Louis.

I do concede that it is possible that there may have been some people at the conference who were not glad to see me there. However, if that was true, I was pleased that they kept their narrow-minded opinions and anti-social behaviors to themselves. Racists are everywhere - both in the white community and in the black community. I wasn't going to let the mere possibility of a negative experience keep me from the event.

Many black people can recount several instances in which they felt or experienced a trespass with racist roots. As such, many aren't keen or apt to voluntarily place themselves in an environment in which they think that an attack would be inevitable. So, despite the fact that many black people who love guns and enjoy the right to own them live in the cities where the NRA holds its Annual Meetings, they don't attend attend because of fear.

Some Black Firearm Owners Do Not Know Much About The Organization

Another given reason why black folks don't join the NRA or attend its conferences is that they do not know much about the organization and its history of empowering citizens with firearm ownership. Personally, I did not know much about the NRA until I sought out one of its credentialed Firearms Instructors for the prerequisite training for a state of Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL). Even so, I thought that it was pretty cool to meet a black man associated with the NRA. To say the least, it did spur an interest within me to learn more about the organization.

Through my own personal research, I discovered that the NRA was very much involved in the drafting of Michigan Public Act 384 of 2000. That law took effect on July 1rst of 2001 and significantly altered the way that the state of Michigan issued CPLs. Michigan became what is now known as a "shall issue" state. As such, any person regardless of where he lived in the state would be issued a CPL if he met the state's new uniform criteria that then and now applies to all residents.

Previously, the state of Michigan had a "discretionary issuing" scheme whereby each of the state's 83 counties made up their own rules regarding who could get a CPL. Predictably, in counties where blacks were not present in appreciable numbers almost everybody who wanted a CPL received one. Alternatively, black citizens in counties - like Wayne - could only get them if they were politically connected or met some arbitrary and capricious standard created by its Gun Board to deny and discourage most people from even attempting to get one.

The Michigan Firearms Act of 1927 was the law that created discretionary CPL issuance, created the 83 County Gun Boards which issued the CPLs, and created a requirement for all handguns to safety inspected. This law was enacted as a direct result of the Ossian Sweet case of 1925 at the behest of the political power wielded by the KKK.

In that case Dr. Sweet - a black physician - was acquitted of murder after defending his home against a mob of racists protesting his move into their neighborhood. Thus, the aforementioned law was designed to disarm black people and make them vulnerable to the depredations of racists. Gun control has racist roots. Any organization that dedicates it money, time, and energy against these laws is an ally of the black community.

The NRA is the world's premier firearms rights organization and firearms safety education  institution. As such, over 750,000 citizens per year are trained by NRA Certified Firearms Instructors. Furthermore, they spend and exert a lot of effort, energy, and money towards fighting for gun rights. In fact, two very recent and significant U.S. Supreme Court decisions were on the very issue of gun rights in the black community: DC vs. Heller and McDonald vs. Chicago.

What Will It Take To Bring More Black Members Into The NRA?

The NRA will need to make it a conscious and overt goal to recruit significant numbers of black members into its organization. Once this decision is made, the necessary acts to support this decision will quickly fall into place. Obvious suggestions include but do not exclude the following: advertising in black media outlets, conduct boots-on-the-ground membership drives in major cities where blacks are concentrated, operate outreach activities in the black church, and sponsor educational exhibitions in selected markets.

A great opportunity awaits the NRA if they elect to embark upon this goal. Black gun owners are a growing segment of the gun community that no other organization is actively recruiting. I truly believe that if the NRA shows true and genuine interest in the black gun community, they will respond in droves.

If by chance, you want to join the NRA, use my NRA Recruiter's link to get a $10 discount on a one year membership.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Book Hotel Rooms With A Safe

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip:

When traveling with your concealed firearm, be sure to book a room for your lodging that has a safe. There may be a time when you wish to visit a Pistol-FREE Zone and do not have a safe place to temporarily stash your handgun.

I would strongly urge that a CPL-holder does NOT leave their firearm in their hotel room. I am not necessarily taking a "pot-shot" at cleaning room staff but I advocate against providing a temptation. The last thing you want to deal with on a trip is reporting a stolen firearm.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Stay Abreast Of Changes In The Law

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip:

A huge responsibility of being a CPL-holder is staying abreast of the changes in the law. The laws change frequently and you should be knowledgeable of all of those changes. Ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse. Violations are severely punished with jail time and/or expensive fines.

For example, recently a local man found himself facing charges because he fired his handgun several times into his front yard. He honestly believes that he didn't do anything wrong. To stay current, have a regular consultation with a credible attorney and give serious thought to joining a gun rights organization, such as the NRA or a local state-level gun rights organization.

2012 NRA Annual Meeting In St. Louis, MO Recap

I have had a few days to decompress in the aftermath of attending the National Rifle Association's NRA) Annual Meeting in St. Louis this past weekend. So, it is high time that I'd at least capture some thoughts on the experience and share some of what I saw, heard, and did while I was there.

To begin, the conference didn't start officially until Friday, April 13th, but I had an invitation by my buddy from Texas (Matt Miller) to accept a free ticket to attend the NRA Banquet & Auction on the preceding Thursday AND I was previously invited by the "Cam & Company Show" to be an in-studio guest later that same day. So, I had to make the trek from Detroit to be in St. Louis by 5:00pm local time (CST) on Thursday.

I hit the highway early enough in the day on Thursday - 7:00am EST - to travel safely through a few states to reach St. Louis: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. The trip was relatively long (9 hours) but it was a snap especially when you consider that in 2010 that I had driven 12 hours to go the Annual Meeting in Charlotte, NC. The last few hours of my trip, across Illinois, with my handgun unloaded, separated, and stored in my trunk caused me a bit of separation anxiety but I survived.

By the time I saw the St. Louis Arch, I literally had mere minutes to get cleaned up for the aforementioned banquet. As many people know, this event is a fundraiser for the NRA which funds many worthy firearms education programs across the country.

Within 30 minutes of announcing my intention of meeting NRA Executive Vice-President Wayne LaPierre to my buddy Matt, he magically appeared and I promptly walked up to him and introduced myself to him.

We had a short but great conversation upon after which he gave me his business card. Anyone who knows me will attest that I am not shy. As such, I'll be calling him soon about some projects that I hope will interest him.

After the banquet wound down, I made my way over to the Convention Center to be ready for my appearance on the "Cam & Company Show." By the time I made it there, I had plenty of time to spare. As such, I was chilling off-set with some friends until my slot arrived.

My interview was 15 minutes long, but it seemed like the time flew by. We covered a lot of ground: my expectations for the conference, what I planned to do, what's been going on in Detroit, and what kind of firearms I like. Check out the full Youtube embedded video:

Throughout the weekend, I spent a considerable amount of time in the Media Room. For me as a blogger, one of the greatest joys of attending conferences is meeting my peers in the gun rights blogosphere. I ran into some familiar faces and met some new ones. The biggest risk of name-dropping in a blog about a conference is that inevitably someone will be left out. Without naming names, here are some pictures of folks I met:

Not pictured among the people I networked and/or hung out:
Dennis Badurina (Dragon leatherworks), John Richardson (No Lawyers - Only Guns and Money), Robert Farago (The Truth About Guns), Rita Beeman (Fatale Abstraction), Don Gwinn (IllinoisCarry), Tim McNabb (Tin Cans Unlimited LLC), Destinee, Days of Our Trailers, Bonnie Burgette (Squeaky Wheel Seeks Grease), Dan Hall (GunUp), WeerdWorld, Ambulance Driver Files.

If I left you out of the above list, let me know. I'll update it ASAP.

Moreover, no trip to the Annual Meeting would be complete without a trip to the exhibition floor. I spent a lot of time looking at all of toys on display and speaking with the celebrities present. No gun porn in this post (maybe in my next one) but here are some photos from my view in the exhibitor's hall:

In all truth, I spent a considerable amount of time being social at the conference. The bulk of the fun I had during that weekend was spent in hotel lobbies, at the bar, and at area restaurants. I didn't take many pictures of those activities because I was busy being social. However, I snagged a few photos from the web of other bloggers of me socializing. The first picture is of me and Jay Grazio (MA-rooned) that was taken by Oleg Volk:

Wouldn't that picture be epic if Oleg had added in some lightning bolts between my hands? Well, I think so.

The next picture was taken off of Bonnie's web site. It shows me and Jay bumping into the great Massad Ayoob at a local eatery.

As many of you know, Ayoob is a nationally recognized expert on the proper usage of lethal force during a self-defense encounter. I seized the opportunity to ask him for his take and position on the Trayvon Martin case in Florida. I'll keep his comments private but they are very similar to what I think about the case.

In all, I had an awesome time at the conference. I am already certain that I will be at next year's conference in Houston, TX. There is so much that I could add to this post about what it meant for me to be here and why it was important that I didn't miss it. I may post more about the conference in a future post.

Stay tuned.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Carry Your Handgun Every Day

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: While it is true that merely taking a CPL Class will give you some "soft" skills, such as awareness training and mindset conditioning, your odds of remaining safe will be maximized if you carry a handgun EVERY day.

We do not know the day or the hour when a predator may target us for victimization. As such, we should be prepared during EVERY moment. It is truly better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Earlier today I had a conversation with a lady who confessed to me that she doesn't carry her gun EVERY day. She explained to me that her gun is too big and is a literal drag on her frame - pun intended. My response: Buy a smaller handgun and carry it EVERY day.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Always Know Where Your Handgun Is Located

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Your firearms should treated with as much attention as you would with a child. You should be aware of its location at all times. Personally, I endorse always wearing it; it'll always be close by - if needed - and you'll always know where it is located.

Any time that your firearm is not on your person, it is possible that it can be lost or stolen. Thus, it is imperative to exercise due caution and care when using wardrobe dressing rooms, using public and private restrooms, using vehicle valet services, and using parking lots of Pistol-FREE Zones in bad neighborhoods.

Furthermore, if you have firearms that are not being actively used for personal protection, they should be kept locked up and unloaded in a secure location. Moreover, if you are going to be out of town for a spell, you should consider leaving your other firearms with a trusted friend or relative until your return to keep them secure.

Personal Protection Tip: Learn How To Identify A Predator

Personal Protection Tip: Your ability to stay safe will be largely dependent on your ability to recognize a predator. There is a reason why there isn't a picture by the term "bad guy" in the dictionary. He can look like anything.

As such, do not gauge the worthiness of one's character by his physical attributes: race, height, weight, attire, and attractiveness. The only way to identify a bad guy is by his actions and behaviors.

Be wary of folks who are not acting congruent with the environment. The best policy is to leave the area, if practical and feasible, before something can develop. Otherwise, keep suspicious acting persons in your view and at a distance. If necessary, verbally warn them not approach you if he starts heading your way, before taking defensive and/or evasive action.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Practice Safely drawing Your Handgun From Concealment

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: If you carry a concealed firearm, you will need to practice how to safely and quickly draw it from your holster. Depending on where you actually carry it, you will need to remove garments out of the way (e.g. shirt, coat, skirt, or dress), or open the housing (e.g. fanny pack, purse, or deep concealment holster) to have access.

Drawing a handgun creates a liability concern that many gun ranges aren't willing to assume. As such, many do not allow shooters to draw on the premises. Thus, you will need to find a place where you can do so discreetly. For many people, handgun drawing practice is done in the sanctity of the home.

Furthermore, when practicing your firearm draw, be sure to practice scanning your environment for potential cover from incoming fire and moving towards it. In an actual defense, it is suggested that you "get off the X" by moving towards cover while drawing your firearm. If you practice doing so, your response during an actual defense will have been imprinted in your brain and increase the odds that you will act as you have practiced.

Personal Protection Tip: Always Lock Your Vehicle's Doors

Personal Protection Tip: An often overlooked safety tip is the act of locking your vehicle's door promptly upon entering it. Don't make it easier for a carjacker to make you his next victim by allowing him to merely snatch your door open while you are stopped at a traffic signal.

For many owners of newer vehicles, the car's electronic system does this simple act - door locking - automatically. However, for people driving older model cars, it will require just a second to make you more secure while on the road.

By the way, if someone should just happen to appear at your car and attempt to open the door, you should consider yourself to be in a "reasonable" and imminent threat of great bodily harm - immediately take defensive action.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Maintain Healthy Personal Relationships

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: If keeping your CPL is important to you, maintaining healthy relationships will others will be key. If you are currently involved with someone and the romance is rocky, you should make an effort to smooth it out or end it.

The quickest way to lose your CPL is to be merely accused of domestic violence and/or have a Personal Protection Order (PPO) levied against you without an opportunity to a hearing before-hand. Not making light of legitimate violent behaviors that need to be addressed by the criminal justice system, however, many people have unjustly lost their concealed carry privileges because of a lie told by a vindictive ex-lover.

Thus, as I have taught my students over the years, carrying a firearm is truly an alternative lifestyle that will affect every other facet of your life. Accordingly, great care needs to be taken with the selection of a person to romantically enter your life.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Advise Family And Friend To Abstain From Practical Jokes

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: A fundamental rule for safely operating a firearm is to "Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it." As a practical matter, of course, a person who legally carries a firearm should never shoot at a perceived threat until he has confirmed it visually.

As a precautionary measure, CPL-holders should advise family members and friends who like to play practical jokes that they shouldn't jump out of any bushes or engage in other potentially startling pranks in an attempt to give them a good scare. The results could be tragic.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Buy A Gun-Safe For Your Vehicle

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: A portable "GunVault" (i.e. car safe) is a necessary accessory to safely and securely store your firearm while you are visiting a Pistol-FREE Zone or utilizing valet services.

This solution is a preferable option to merely stashing your pistol in the glovebox. Many designs can either be bolted to your car's floorpan or securely cabled to one of your seat frames. Keep in mind that no product is fool-proof; your car itself could be stolen. However, making your firearm difficult to snag may be the difference that keeps your gun from being stolen.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: Michigan's CPL Is Recognized in 39 Other States

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tip: A CPL issued from the state of Michigan is our nation's most recognized concealed carry permit. Currently, it is recognized in 39 other states.

Please keep in mind that firearm laws can vary widely. As such, you will need to do your homework before visiting other states while armed. Pay particular attention to the following concerns: Pistol-Free-Zones, "Stand Your Ground" laws, and law enforcement stops.

Moreover, a great resource to consult, in advance of the trip, is the state Attorney General's web site of all the states you will be visiting and driving through during your trip.
